BABE MAGIC BEATS TRAVS
In game one of a Thursday afternoon twin bill Atlanta outfielder Babe Ellis came through with more home-run magic... he walloped a three-run blast in the top of the ninth to give the Crackers an 8-6 win over luckless Little Rock on the road at Ray Winder Field... it was Ellis' (.303) 11th clout of the season and gave him 41 RBIs... Forest Thompson struggled, but got his SA-leading 9th victory... the Pebs got to him for 10 hits over his eight innings... George Diehl pitched the ninth for him... 3B Charlie Glock (.357) socked a two-run homer for the winners and CF Charlie Trippe (.331) tripled in a pair of runs, too... C Ted Clawitter (.292) got a grand slammer for Little Rock.

NO'S SMOLA SMACKS BARONS OUT OF 1ST
In the opening game of the doublehearder at Pelican Stadium, New Orleans got a gem of a game from little 5-foot-9 Walt Smola (4-2/3.91), who befuddled Birmingham on seven hits, shutting them out 4-0 and knocking the Barons out of a first-place tie with Atlanta... Big 6-foot-4 first sacker Al Flair (.320) was the big gun at the plate with three RBIs... the Pels only got six hits... Birmingham was their own worst enemy... losing pitchier Alex Ronay (7-2/2.92) only allowed one earned run as the Barons committed a pair of critical errors... it was New Orleans' third straight victory... Birmingham (27-18) slipped to second place behind Atlanta (28-17)... the Pels are in seventh place in the standings with 23-25 and trail the Crackers by 7 games.

VOLS WIN WITH 7-RUN SURGE IN 7TH
Nashville captured the first game of the doubleheader 8-3 from Chattanooga at the Dell yesterday afternoon with a seven-run surge in the seventh inning... the roof caved in on Lookout loser Bill Kennedy (4-7/4.93), who took a 3-1 lead into the inning... CF Hal Jeffcoat (.321) and RF Ted Pawalek (.333) both drove in a pair of runs in the seventh... Chattanooga was led by 2B Ed Lyons (.250), whose two-run rap had put the Lookouts ahead in the sixth... it was Nashville's third consecutive win.

CHICKS EDGE BEARS ON BIG KLU'S HR
In game one of a doubleheader at Hartwell Field in Mobile, Al Sherer (2-0/4.43) went the distance to edge the Bears 3-2... he checked them on two runs and 10 hits, while whiffing eight batters and walking two... 1B Ted Kluszewski (.333) paved the way to victory with a go-ahead homer in the top of the eighth... RF George Bradley (.167) also went deep for the Chickasaws... in a well-pitched game Frank Laga (5-2/3.43) took a tough loss, giving up just three runs with eight Ks and two walks.

ATLANTA TAKES A PAIR FROM TRAVELERS
Powered by 19 hits Atlanta also took the second game of the doubleheader 11-7 over the last place Little Rock Travelers... the Crackers won a both ends of the twinbill and jumped two games ahead of Birmingham in the Southern Association pennant battle... SS Ben Steiner (.341), 3B Charlie Glock (.364) and 1B Jimmy Blair (.188) all had three hits to ignite the Crackers... and LF Babe Ellis (.308) also contributed a three-run clout, his 12th of the season... in a rocky outing George Diehl (6-3/3.55) managed a win, but needed help from Dewey Atkins (4-4/5.19/12 G), who shut out the Travelers the final three frames... Atlanta improved their record to 29-17, two games better than Birmingham (27-19).

PELS DEAL BARONS DOUBLE DOSE OF DEFEAT
New Orleans also whipped Birmingham in the nightcap, holding off the Barons 7-6 and giving them a doubleheader sweep... the Pelicans chalked up their fourth win in a row... Tom Sunkel was one of the heroes... he worked three innings of relief and permitted just one unearned run... Big Jim Atkins (3-3/4.20) notched the victory, but wasn't very effective... he was saved by the Pelican bats, who lashed 12 hits, led by CF George Stumpf (.265) and RF Tom Wright (.278) with two RBIs apiece... RF Art Rebel (.289) kept Birmingham in the game with a three-run roundtripper... with the twin losses the Barons (27-19) are now two games behind Southern Association leader Atlanta (29-17).

VOLS WIN 4TH STRAIGHT WITH SWEEP
The Chattanooga Lookouts took it on the chin twice Wednesday afternoon at Sulphur Dell... in the nightcap Nashville roughed them up 10-1 to sweep the twinbill and claim their fourth straight win... the Vols are in third place with a 27-20 mark, two and a half games back of front-running Atlanta (29-17)... Nashville smashed 14 hits, paced by two homers and three RBIs by C Shag Easterwood (.209) and two ribbies apiece by 1B George Byam (.297) and RF Red Treadway (.333)... they also got some fine mound work from A. J. Matulis and Ben Wade... Matulis (1-1/3.65) got the win, stopping the Lookouts on one run and three hits in six frames... Wade (4-5/7.35/12 G) blanked them the last three inings... Chattanooga is now even for the season at 23-23 record, tied for the fifth spot with Mobile.

MOBILE BEARLY BEATS MEMPHIS, SPLITS DH
Everything came together for Mobile in the second game of yesterday's doubleheader... Pat McGlothin gave them a good outing on the hill and Cal Abrams came through with a game-winning hit in the seventh to slip past Memphis 4-3 and split the doubleheader... winning pitcher McGlothin (4-4/3.10) hurled eight and two-thirds innings, gave up only one earned run, struck out six and walked five... with two outs and Chicks on second and third, lanky John Hall (5-5/3.73/13 G) strolled in from the bullpen and struck out 2B Bert Hodges (.296) to end the game... loser Dick Mauney (4-2/1.88) tossed a complete game, yielded eight hits and four runs, walked three batters and struck out six... the Bears are now 23-23 for the year... Memphis is just barely ahead of them at 24-23... Mobile is presently tied for fifth place with Chattanooga and 6 games off the pace... the Chicks are fourth, 5.5 games in back of Atlanta.

CRAX AND ELLIS STILL RED-HOT
The woes for the Little Rock Travelers (10-37) continued... the top team in the Southern Association, the Atlanta Crackers (30-17) crushed them 13-3, giving the Travs their third consecutive loss... it was the Crackers third win in a row... sizzling hot LF Babe Ellis (.318) ripped his 13th home run and batted in four runs in the rout... 3B Charlie Glock (.368), who is also enjoying a great season, chimed in with three hits and two RBIs... both players are among the RBI leaders with 48 and 47 respectively... Atlanta also got a nice start from Sid West (3-2/4.47), who recorded the victory, going all the way and holding Little Rock to five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

BARONS AND BRUNER BLANK PELS
The Pelican bats couldn't get anything going against Birmingham's Roy Bruner yesterday at Pelican Stadium... Bruner (2-4/3.71) mesmerized them 3-0 on seven hits, walked only one and fanned three batters... Byron Cook (2-4/5.19) worked a solid game in defeat, permitting three runs on 10 hits... the Barons were paced by CF Joe Scheldt (.237) with a solo homer... 3B Mickey Rutner (.309) and C Joe Erautt (.324) batted in the other runs... New Orleans had won the previous two games between the clubs... second place Birmingham is 28-19 and still 2 games back of front-running Atlanta with a 30-17 mark.

5 IN A ROW FOR VOLS
A three-run roundtripper by RF Red Treadway (.344) and a two-run blast by 3B Cy Block (.347) powered Nashville past Chattanooga 8-5 at Sulphur Dell... the Vols won for the fifth time in a row, while the Lookouts fell for the third straight game... Treadway's big hit in the seventh frame put Nashville ahead by six runs and they held off a late-inning Chattanooga rally... the Vols pushed their season mark to 28 wins and 20 losses, while the Lookouts dipped to 23-24... Nashville is 2.5 games back of Atlanta in third place... Chattanooga slumped to sixth place and trails by 7 games.

MOBILE'S MINNER FANS 13 CHICKS
Paul Minner didn't have a good first inning in his season debut - Memphis tore him into him for four runs - but the Mobile right-hander settled down and proceeded to strike out 13 batters in a 10-5 decision and the Bears upped their record to 24-23 and dropped Memphis to 24-24... Minner (1-0/1.74) didn't walk a batter and permitted only two earned runs... his Bear teammates gave him great support with 15 hits, led by 1B Chuck Connors (.262) with a homer and three RBIs... CF Cal Abrams (.337) drilled three hits and scored three times... 3B Bill Hart (.250) and RF Homer Matney (.242) also went deep for Mobile... the Bears eased past the Chicks into fourth place in the Southern Association standings.

THE NASHVILLE BANNER

6-GAME WIN STREAK FOR 2ND PLACE VOLS
Yesterday evening the Nashville Vols took over the second spot in the Southern Association by clubbing Chattanooga 9-5, moving past the Birmingham Barons... in the seventh inning Rube Walker was the man of the hour in Nashville with a three-run lazy flyball over the famed right-field fence in Sulphur Dell... the ball didn't travel much more than 300 feet, but it broke up a tight game and sent the Vols on their merry way to their sixth straight triumph... helped out by three double plays, Herb Chmiel (7-3/4.15) shakily carded his 7th victory, allowing five runs on nine hits, along with six walks... it was C Rube Walker's 7th dinger of the year... CF Gil Coan (.396) got another one for Chattanooga... the young 25-year-old has 21 this season, along with 67 RBIs, both tops in the Southern Association... Nashville (29-20) keeps winning, but so does first place Atlanta... the runner-up Vols are still two and a half games behind the Crackers (31-17)... the Barons are 28-20, three games out.

PELS BEAT BARONS WITH 7-RUN 7TH
New Orleans took advantage of a tired starter Frank Nelson by exploding for seven runs in the seventh frame to grab an 8-4 victory from Birmingham... Nelson (8-4/2.67) took a 4-1 lead into the inning, but was battered for four runs and took the loss... the Barons slipped down to third place in the Southern Association with a 28-20 record... at 29-20 Nashville moved ahead of them by a half-game... relievers Jim Atkins (4-3/4.06/12 G) and Jim Shea (1-2/5.59/12 G) shut out Birmingham the last two frames... the New Orleans bats were led by LF Red Lavigne (.333) with three RBIs... he went deep in the second and doubled in two in the bottom of the eighth... RF Tom Wright followed with a game-tying single... then pinchhitter Vern Thoele (.214) put the Pels over-the-top with a two-run base hit... 2B Al Kozar (.317) also contributed two RBIs.

SA LEADER ATLANTA ROLLS ON
Southern Association-leader Atlanta rolled on, whipping Little Rock 6-2 for their fourth successive victory... it was the basement-dwelling Travelers 5th straight defeat... 29-year-old southpaw George Mistos (2-2/4.74) handled Little Rock, held them to just two runs, but had to throw a lot of pitches... the Pebs got nine hits and six walks and put a lot of runners on base, but couldn't buy a base hit with men on base... the Travelers stranded 11 baserunners... newcomer 2B Mel Harpuder (.371) continued to impress manager Kiki Cuyler with his bat... he got a homer, a double and batted in a pair of runs... LF Babe Ellis (.316) and 3B Charlie Glock (.366) also had ribbies for the Crackers... Atlanta has won 13 of its last 15 contests.

MEMPHIS WINS SQUEAKER, BACK IN 4TH
The Memphis bullpen came through for skipper Doc Prothro in an 8-7 squeaker over Mobile in 11 innings and enabled the Chicks to ease back into the fourth spot in the Southern Association, a half-game up on the Bears... Roy Bueschen plated the winning run with a sacrifice liner to left, giving Don Hanski (2-3/4.95) the victory and Pat McGlothin (4-5/3.19) the loss... three Memphis relievers held Mobile scoreless the final four and one-third innings... the Bears' ineptness in the field did them in... the Chicks got six unearned runs on two Mobile miscues... offensively CF Paul Armstrong (.285), LF Roy Bueschen (.320) and RF George Bradley (.193) led them with two RBIs apiece... Mobile got a great game from lanky 6-foot-5 first sacker Chuck Connors (.271)... he homered twice and drove in five runs... the Bears outhit Memphis 14 to 12... the two clubs are playing leapfrog in the standings... the Chickasaws boosted their record to 25-24, just a tad better than Mobile at 24-24.

PELS RALLY LATE, NIP CHICKS
There were only two games played in the Southern Association Sunday... four of the clubs had the day off.

All's well that ends well... New Orleans was headed for defeat... they could get nothing going with the bats and trailed Dick Mauney and the Memphis Chicks 3-0 after six frames, but then the Pelicans perked up and flew away with a 5-4 victory... they capped it with two runs in the top of the ninth... CF George Stumpf (.273) doubled in 2B Al Kozar (.319) to tie it up and 1B Al Flair (.314) gave the Pels the go-ahead run with an RBI single... then reliever Big Jim Atkins (4-3/3.94/13 G) finished Memphis off with a scoreless ninth... New Orleans is nearing the .500 mark with 25 wins and 26 losses... Memphis dropped back to 25-25.

BEARS BEST BARONS
The bats were booming at Hartwell Field yesterday as Mobile outhit and outscored Birmingham 9-6 to move over the .500 mark this season... the Bears banged out 13 hits with 3B Bill Hart (.253) and C Cliff Dapper (.279) doing most of the damage... Hart had homer and drove in three runs, while Dapper had two RBIs... Baron pinchhitter led them with a three-run double... Ray Boles (4-7/7.45) got the win, but tired late... Boles posted 10 strikeouts before he departed in the eighth... Mobile improved to 25-24 and moved back into the fourth spot in the Southern Association, a half game better than Memphis... Birmingham is holding down the third position with a 28-21 mark... after being on top of the league for most of the year, the Barons have slumped to three and a half games behind first place Atlanta.

TOENES STOPS CRAX 4-GAME STRING
It was a long day at the plate yesterday at Ponce de Leon Park for the top team in the Southern Association, the Atlanta Crackers... the Crackers never figured out Chattanooga's Hal Toenes and were shut out 4-0 on four hits... the Lookouts put a stop to the Crax four-game winning string and at the same time ended their own four-game losing streak... in a razor-sharp outing Toenes (8-3/2.48) recorded his 8th win of the year against only 3 defeats and struck out 10... 3B Charlie Letchas (.209) topped Chattanooga with three RBIs... the Lookouts only got six hits off loser Dewey Atkins (4-5/5.12), who worked eight innings, gave up four runs, while fanning 10 and walking four... Chattanooga is a so-so 24-25 for the year with Atlanta really doing well at 31-18, ranking first in the SA.

VOLS WIN 7TH, TRAVS LOSE 6TH
Nashville right-hander Leo Twardy was almost unhittable... he limited Little Rock to just one base hit in a 5-1 victory... LF Jack Bradsher got it in the first frame and drove in the Travelers' only run... Twardy (6-5/4.63) was a bit on the wild side with six bases on balls, but pretty much shut down the Little Rock bats cold... homers accounted for all of the Nashville runs... CF Hal Jeffcoat (.328) slugged a three-run shot and 1B George Byam (.291) had a solo salvo... losing pitcher Al Piechota (4-7/4.30) did well, permitted just two runs on five hits in six innings with four Ks and three walks... it was the Vols' 7th win in a row and moved them within one and a half game of the top spot in the Southern Association... they are now 30-20 and nipping on the heels of Atlanta, whose record is 31-18.

TEAGAN TOPS BEARS FOR 6TH WIN
Birmingham beat Mobile in spite of themselves... the Barons committed 6 errors, but Jack Teagan (6-2/3.08) overcame that by holding the Bears to just four hits, while striking out seven and walking only two for his 6th win of the season... light-hitting 2B Joe Rullo (.222) paced Birmingham with three RBIs and LF Zeb Eaton (.320) laced three hits in the game.... RF Homer Matney (.255) was the only Bear to solve Teagan... he went 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple... Frank Laga (5-3/3.47) toiled in defeat for Mobile, allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings... the loss sent Mobile back to fifth place with a 25-25 mark... Birmingham is third in the Southern Association with a solid 29-21 record, only two and a half games out of first.

SHERER SHAMES PELS
32-year-old vet Al Sherer toyed with visiting New Orleans... he shamed them on just five hits and sparked Memphis to an easy 6-1 shellacking... going the route Sherer (3-0/3.83) chalked up five strikeouts and issued three walks, running the Chicks' season record to 26-25... the Pels slipped to 25-27... Memphis collected 10 hits with 2B Bert Hodges (.284) driving in two runs and LF Roy Bueschen (.328) racking up three hits... New Orleans loser Walt Smola (4-3/3.66) deserved better... he only permitted one earned run in his six innings.

LOOKOUTS LAMBAST 1ST PLACE CRACKERS
Chattanooga pitcher Bill Kennedy did it all, both on the mound and at the plate... on the road at Ponce de Leon Park, the Lookouts lambasted Southern Association-leading Atlanta 10-3, lashing out 14 hits... not only did Kennedy (5-7/4.57) club a three-run roundtripper and drive in four runs, he also stopped the Crackers on just one earned run and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts... 3B Charlie Letchas (.214) also homered and drove in two runs... Chattanooga is now even for the year with a 25-25 record... Atlanta is 31-19... the Lookouts have taken the first two games of the four-game series.

VOLS STAY HOT WITH 8TH STRAIGHT
The wins just keep on coming for the Nashville Vols... they stayed hot with a 5-2 victory over hapless Little Rock at Ray Winder Field... it was their 8th straight victory and the Travelers' 7th loss in a row... Nashville climbed to within a half game of first place Atlanta... the Vols are 31-20 and the Crackers are 31-19... Ben Wade (5-5/6.82) finally had a good outing... the 6-foot-3 right-hander shackled Little Rock on five hits, struck out seven and walked four, while hurling a complete game... 2B Hank Schenz (.309) was Nashville's top gun with a two-run blast and three RBIs... 3B Cy Block (.357) also added two hits, two runs and an RBI.

MCGLOTHIN BRILLIANT AGAINST BIRMINGHAM
Mobile rolled to an easy win yesterday at home at Hartwell Field... leading the way was tall right-hander Pat McGlothin (5-5/2.79), who checked Birmingham on seven hits in a 5-0 whitewashing... McGlothin stood out with 11 Ks and no walks in a splendid outing... the Bears got eight hits with three players getting two apiece: 3B Bill Hart (.264), 2B Stan Wasiak (.191) and 1B Jack Maupin (.284)... Wasiak had two runs batted in... lefty Alex Kellner's (3-5/4.65) control did him in with seven walks in six innings... the Bears burned him for four runs in the opening frame... Mobile climbed to 26-25, beating the Barons for the second day in a row... third place Birmingham is now 29-22 and lost a chance to get closer to first place Atlanta... they are two and a half games out of first place... the Bears are fifth in the standings.

CHICKS WIN IN WILD 11TH
At home at Russwood Park, Memphis was in dire straits twice, but came back to top New Orleans 6-5 in 11 innings... wildness by losing pitcher Tom Sunkel cost the Pels the game... Sunkel (6-3/2.90) walked four in the bottom of the 11th, eventually forcing in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded walk to RF Lindsey Deal (.309)... the Chicks outhit the Pelicans 12 to 8, led by SS Freddie Hancock (.294) with 4-6... New Orleans LF Pete Kraus (.333) batted in four runs to top his club at-bat, three of them with a first-inning double... Memphis upped its record to 27-25, good for fourth place, 5 games back of Atlanta... the Pels fell to 25-28 and seventh place in the standings.

MY LIFE IN 1947

It's the middle of May... school will be coming to an end soon... summer vacation is right around the corner... I'm still in the second grade... wasn't smart enough to skip any grades... it sure looks like it's gonna take me at least 12 years to graduate... started the year at Russell in Mobile... then switched to Gilbert in Florence when my stepfather went back to sea... he'll be gone 3-4 times a year for 3 months or so each trip... my mama and I miss him, but the bills have to be paid... not a perfect situation, but much of the time, you do what you have to do to get by in this life.

I'm in Florence, Alabama, living with my grandparents... the Tri-Cities (Florence, Sheffield and Tuscumbia) only have 7-8 movie theatres... New Orleans had about 50.

Thought I would give you a couple of movie reviews of current movies... Ronald Reagan starred in Stallion Road... and Roy Rogers was in Apache Rose... nope, I wasn't a Reagan fan, but I sure did like Roy, Trigger and the Sons of the Pioneers... Bob Nolan and the Sons of the Pioneers always sang a song or two around the campfire at night... they really were good... really good harmony...at 7 I wasn't too fond of Roy's girl friend, Dale Evans... lately she's always in Roy's movies... sometimes I got the impression Roy wanted to "kiss" her... ugh, ugh, ugh... what a revoltin' thing to do.

You can listen to the Sons of the Pioneers singing Tumbling Tumbleweeds here:
