I think one more loss will be the kill shot.
As it is, need Baltimore to lose at least two to Toronto and the limping Yankees. I guess the reality is that Detroit needs to beat the Indians three straight and Baltimore needs to drop two to the Jays - highly unlikely.

Hope still springs eternal.
Toronto has played poorly and the Red Sox still have home field advantage to fight for. I can see them dropping one or more quite easily over the weekend. The Orioles are surging so I can't be as hopeful about them dropping a game against the Yankees but it isn't crazy to think that they will. I think it is more likely than not that one of the two will open the door for Detroit. The biggest problem is Detroit. Can they get the offense going without Victor? Can a rookie and a guy that can't string two outs together since May get them two wins before Verlander is on the mound? The Braves aren't the push over that they were a few months back. If it comes down to a three way tie, next week will be insane. Sunday - @Atlanta Monday - Cleveland (if they need this game, Cleveland will be playing scraps and end pieces) Tuesday - Play in game in Baltimore or Toronto Wednesday - Wild card game in Baltimore or Toronto Thursday - Game one in Texas. Even if everything breaks right, that's a labyrinth that they probably can't survive.

I read something today that there could be a 3-way tie for second place *after* the Tigers win a necessary game 162 from the Indians on Monday, which could potentially mean that the Tigers play five win-or-go-home games in five cities in five days.
Atlanta on Sunday, Detroit vs. Indians on Monday, wild-card tie-breaker in Seattle, Baltimore, or Toronto on Tuesday, wild-card tie-breaker #2 against another of those three on Wednesday, the ACTUAL wild car game at the third of those three on Thursday, before normalcy would then ... NOT return with a late-start ALDS Game 1 on Friday

Well, there is much hope for the future and it was fun to have a chance at the playoffs still on the table at season's end.
Now, on to following the Cowboys.

Sorry guys. Thought the Tigers had a pretty good shot at the last wild card. Just got a bit unlucky against the Tribe this year.

The Indians are the reason the Tigers aren't in this year. I will now hate them forever.

Brad Ausmus has critics, but Tigers GM is only voice that counts http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2016/10/brad_ausmus_tigers.html
Should he stay or should he go now? Ausmus has a team option for 2017. Do you think Detroit should keep him on another year or give him the heave ho? I think they should keep him. I thought he did a very good job overall. He handled the bullpen very well. He had to deal with some pretty big injuries throughout the year: Castellanos, J.D. Martinez, Zimmermann, Maybin, Iglesias. He had 3 of the original 5 starters crap out on him: Zimmermann, Sanchez, and Pelfrey. He had 3 rookie/basically rookie starters pitch for him for a huge chunk of the season. And the team was in the playoff hunt until the last game of the season. This team that finished in last place last year. I think, earlier in the year there were actually rumblings of him being considered for manager of the year because of how well he has done. I think that's out the window since they didn't make the postseason. I like him. I think he's a keeper. And, should he still be here next year, I really look forward to what he can do with this young pitching staff.

I think he should stay too. Actually think he did a great job this season.
Do any of you think Justin Upton has it in him to produce for a full season? He always puts up get paid numbers by the end of a season, but those numbers are deceiving if you take them at face value. |

I think Ausmus will end up staying. But if it were my call I would make the change. I'm sorry guys but it drives me nuts how we are so inept at doing the little things to win close games or get W's against other good teams. Hitting into double plays, advancing the base runner, when to call the hit-and-run or a steal or God forbid laying down a bunt. But that's just me, remember I'm the fan that only cares about winning the World Series and doesn't take no joy in division championships or the pennant. Thank God for YouTube because I was only 10 when we won back in '84 ...my memory is all already going bad.

Has anyone thought about free agent signings yet?
Call me crazy, but I wouldn't mind seeing them sign R.A. Dickey. I know, he is really, really old but; he won't be injured, he will cost very little, he will never be a problem off the field and he just can't possibly be worse than Pelfrey.

Avila: Tigers ?need to get younger, leaner?
Henning: Tigers fans should brace for severe change Henning: Avila ready to deal in mission to remake Tigers Looks like the Tigers might be up for getting rid of some of the old, expensive guys. I wonder who that'll be? I am literally okay with them dealing any one of the old guys, including Cabrera and Verlander (though I would struggle more with him going than Miguel), if they can get good, young guys who can help us to really compete.

Gut feeling...I think JD is gone. He might be our most valuable trade chip at this point. 1 more year left on his deal, 3 straight years of great production, probably going to get paid big after the season. I'd hate to see it but it makes sense.
I want JV and Miggy to both retire as Tigers, and honestly I'm not sure anyone wants either of those deals anyway. Darkhorse due to his age and the time remaining on the deal- Kinsler. Might be a good time to see what we can get for him before his mid-late 30s collapse happens. Only thing I'd worry about is the lack of a 2nd baseman behind him, unless they think Jacoby Jones is ready and capable of filling in. I could also see one more BIG run and then a complete retooling next offseason. There's a lot of money off the books after 2017. |

I want JV and Miggy to retire Tigers too. I just think that if they are trying to get rid of older guys with big contracts, that now, or at least soon, would be a good time to get the best bang for the buck. Their returns will diminish sooner rather than later. Kinsler falls into this category too, imo.
The issue that I see with one more big run is that the Tigers just can't afford it. They were hit with the luxury tax this year. Next year's tax is, I think, 30% of what's spent over the cap (is that how that works?). According BBRef, their estimated payroll is between $207-220M (that's without replacing Aybar and Salty), which is well over the $189M cap. Which works out to be about a $5.5 - 9.3M tax. Mike Ilitch is wealthy, but that hurts. Even if all of my numbers are off a bit, the Tigers are looking at spending a lot of money next year for a slightly older version of this year's team. Apparently Mr. I and Al Avila are not okay with that. I say it's time to pull a few David Price type trades where we unload a few really good guys to get a bunch of potentially really good young guys. Fulmer-Boyd-Norris showed me that type of deal is possible, even if it stings. I just worry that JV, MIggy, and Kinsler (while all still healthy and not looking to go downhill) could turn into V-Marts, where they are old and expensive and no one will want them because of that. Or worse yet, they turn into Sanchezs, where they are expensive and suck. If the Boss and GM think its time to get younger and leaner, trade the guys who can get the most bang for the buck while the trading is good.
