De La Hoya Wins
 De La Hoya retained the lightly regarded World Boxing Organization lightweight title with a third-round technical knockout at the MGM Grand. Referee Mitch Halpern stopped the bout 1:02 into the third after De La Hoya decked Griffith with a vicious left hook. Griffith got back on his feet but still was wobbly when Halpern stopped the bout The title bout headed the James Toney-Roy Jones Jr. super middleweight title fight undercard on pay per view. "I'm more mature now," De La Hoya said “I can take my time. If a knockout comes, it comes. I've been training hard and I think it shows I'm ready for the big fights now."

Robinson Offers De La Hoya
 After sitting ringside for the De La Hoya-Griffith contest, unified lightweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson told boxing scribes that he has made a generous offer to De La Hoya. "There's no problem with networks now that my Showtime contract has ended." Robinson said he was currently in negotiations with both Showtime and HBO, but until he has a response from De La Hoya he will not close any deal. "I just hope that when Oscar says he's ready for big fights, that includes me."

Robinson Joins HBO
 The unified lightweight champion announced yesterday that he has reached a deal with HBO-TVKO for a six-fight contract. Seth Abraham, president of Time Warner Sports, operator of HBO and pay-per-view TVKO, said the deal has the potential to be more lucrative than the deals Pernell Whitaker and Roy Jones Jr have. The rumoured $18 million deal works out at approximately $3 million per fight.

Robinson - De La Hoya PPV
 Hot on the heels of Sugar Ray Robinson signing with HBO-TVKO comes the news that Robinson-De La Hoya will meet in either April or May 1996 on TVKO. With both expected to compete in at least one contest before - details will be finalised in the coming weeks.

De La Hoya Wins Again
 World Boxing Organization lightweight champion Oscar De La Hoya successfully defended his title for the third time Saturday when he stopped challenger Johnny Avila in the ninth round at the Grand Olympic Auditorium. De La Hoya (16-0, 15 knockouts) forced Avila to back off with several jabs and combinations. Referee Raul Caiz escorted Avila to Dr. Adam Karns at ringside. Karns examined cuts above and below Avila’s eye and determined the fight could not continue at 1:07 of the ninth round. "I'm already ready for Robinson," was De La Hoya's reaction when asked about his upcoming lightweight championship contest.

 Sugar Ray Robinson: The Year That Was In 1994 Sugar Ray Robinson became a giant in the sport. And as unlikely as it sounds, his future is even brighter than his immediate past. Robinson unified the lightweight division having beaten the best opposition in the 135-pound class, Orzubek Nazarov and Miguel Angel Gonzalez. He also defended against three championship-caliber opponents in Leavander Johnson, Sharmba Mitchell and Azumah Nelson. Looking at The's Ring's current top ten lightweight rankings, Robinson has already met and beaten half of the field. If you include the fact that he is penciled in to face Billy Schwer in February and the big showdown with Oscar De La Hoya a few months later - providing he comes through both fights, there has not been such a dominant and active champion since the great Joe Louis.

Ray Robinson KO 3 Bobby Giepert
 Atlantic City, New Jersey - Sugar Ray Robinson, undefeated lightweight champion of the world, made another case to be called the greatest fighter, pound-for-pound in the world today. Vicious in the demeanor whilst his boxing is exquisite - Giepert had as much chance in the ring with Robinson as a prisoner does in front of the firing squad. Nobody would call this a fight and it could be argued that few boxers today will force Robinson into a serious fight.

Would love to see a Robinson-Whitaker Superfight, maybe at junior welterweight. Although I guess Robinson will be moving up pretty soon, seeing as he has pretty much beaten everyone that's worth beating at lightweight.

 It's official. Sugar Ray Robinson and Oscar De La Hoya will meet for the lightweight championship of the world. The date will be April 22nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Robinson - De La Hoya Share Card
 Bob Arum, promoter of WBO lightweight champion Oscar De La Hoya, said he was very happy to announce that in anticipation of their April showdown, De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Robinson will both feature on the February 18th event at the MGM Grand. De La Hoya will defend his WBO title against super featherweight champion John John Molina. Robinson will defend his unified titles against IBF mandatory challenger Britain's Billy Schwer.

De La Hoya Goes The Distance
 Oscar De La Hoya got the boxing lesson he wanted and the win he needed. De La Hoya, forced to go the distance for only the second time in his young pro career, was the picture of frustration but also a winner after defending the WHO version of the lightweight title with a unanimous decision over John John Molina. “This gave me a chance to build up some experience,” said De La Hoya, who is scheduled to fight unified lightweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson on April 22. “He had a lot more experience against world-class competition.”

Robinson Whips Schwer
 Sugar Ray Robinson made short work of Commonwealth champion Billy Schwer as he tore into him from the bell. To Schwer's credit he withstood 5 minutes and 56 seconds of Robinson before referee Mills Lane waved Robinson to his corner without counting the fallen fighter. "I'm very pleased with my performance tonight and I look forward to returning here on April 22nd."

Robinson Talks About Future
 As lightweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson relaxed after his most recent title defense he spoke about his immediate future and where he sees himself ten years time. "Welterweight champion, unified welterweight champion," he went on, "George keeps telling me that'll be my natural weight, and George is pretty good with those kind of things." Who does he expect to fight at welterweight, "Trindad could still be around, Oscar... new fellas." Changing direction Robinson starting selling his next fight, no not De La Hoya, "He's meant to be real tough, with a big punch. What's his record again George?" 12 and 0 with 10 knockouts. "That's right. He's from Argentina." Turns out Robinson is squeezing in his WBA mandatory defense against a Raul Horacio Balbi before the De La Hoya mega-fight. Wasn't that risking an injury? "No more than training. 'Sides he worked for his shot and I got work to deadlines."

Robinson Never Got Started
 That was the warning from his trainer George Gainsford last night, "Robinson never got a chance to get started, once he hit that boy with his left the fight was over." The champion scored the first knockdown just over a minute of the action gone with the referee picking up a count of seven, the knockout blow came at 2:54 and Balbi never looked like beating the count. "Hopefully De La Hoya will give him some rounds," Gainford continued, "If he don't then Robinson might struggle for competition."

De La Hoya Sprains Wrist, Fight Off
 Oscar De La Hoya sprained his left wrist while sparring and will not be able to meet the unified lightweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson on April 22 at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas. The fight, both Olympic gold medalists first pay-per-view contest, could be held at the same location later in the year, president of Time Warner Seth Abraham said on hearing the news. De La Hoya injured the wrist during the weekend and was examined by doctors Monday and Tuesday.

Robinson Tries To Save Date
 "Well it's pretty disappointing with only a few weeks to go," was the champions verdict when news reached him of De La Hoya's withdrawal. "There's not too many guys available at such short notice, but I'll see if anybody's willing to substitute." Robinson did reveal his preference would of been Shane Mosley or Ivan Robinson, both namesakes - yet both have bouts scheduled in April.
