1917-18 News and Notes
I forgot to update everyone on Babe Ruth’s progress. He started in LF all year for the Cardinals. He hit 6 home runs, drove in 82 runs, and walked 87 times. He finished the year with a .273 batting average. His power ratings remains 8/19. Everything else has improved other then power. He’s got time though… Something else I haven’t really talked about are the accomplishments players have achieved. OOTP does a nice job of keeping tabs on certain things. 17 years in, lets take a quick look. Noone has ever hit 3 home runs in a game, while only 2 players have struck out 15. Red Ames did it in 1904, while Rube Waddell struck out 15 in just 8 innings in 1908. Brooklyn happened to be the victim on both occasions. 15 No-Hitters have been thrown. Rube Waddell threw the first one way back in 1901, and he’s thrown 4 total. One of those was a perfect game in 1915. Ed Killian and Christy Mathewson have also thrown a perfect game. Zach Wheat is the only triple Crown winner. In 1914, he hit .326, with 13 home runs and 99 RBI’s. And finally, Ty Cobb has set what maybe a unbreakable record. In 1911, when Cobb had a career best batting average of .410, he hit safely in 58 straight games. 58!!!! That’s the record by 19 games. The 1917 draft is the weakest draft I’ve ever seen. There’s 4 solid hitters, maybe 1 solid pitcher and the rest is crap. Buzz Arlett, who I’ve never heard of goes first to the New York Yankees. ![]() ![]() The Legendary Ed Delahanty is inducted into the Hall of Fame. He’s easily the league’s best player so far. I’m thinking about naming the Rookie of the Year trophy after him as a fitting tribute. Won’t make a decision about that yet though. John McGraw also gets inducted. He’s had a great career, and this honour is well deserved. ![]() I imported OF Oscar Charleston(decent talent, looks like he’ll have a chance to get better though) and OF Alejandro Oms(looks like a backup). These two catch me up on the players I missed, and all other players will be imported with their correct debut years. Actually debuting in 1918 was 3B Judy Johnson(will start at 3B one day), and 3B Oliver Marcelle(will also start 1 day) . They will be imported in aswell. Charleston signed with the Brooklyn Robins. Oms also chose Brooklyn. Judy Johnson is now a Cleveland Indian, while Oliver Marcelle joins the Chicago White Sox. |

1918 Predictions
![]() ![]() Top Player ![]() Heilmann won the AL MVP last season. Top Pitcher ![]() I’ve never heard of Boehling, but he and Heilmann are the reason St Louis is a popular pick for the AL pennant. |

Does he come in solely as an outfielder or is he rated as a pitcher as well? |

1918 Regular Season
Noodles Hahn retired before the new season began. He will go down as one of the all-time greats. He lead baseball in different categories 40 times during his 19 year career. His torn UCL in 1913 ended his dominant run. He was never the same after that. He retires 4th in wins with 336, 6th in ERA with a 2.52 and 2nd in shutouts with 62. Sure fire Hall of Famer. Here is his career. ![]() 31 year old Ty Cobb records hit number 2500 on August 8th. I don’t think he’ll be able to reach Ed Delahanty’s hits record. That would require him to stay healthy, which is something he hasn’t come close to doing in his career. Cobb’s having his worst season ever by the way. He’s hitting a career low .270 right now, far off his career average of .333. With 3 games remaining in the regular season, the St. Louis Browns led the Tigers by 1 game. The Tigers would host Cleveland for 3 games, while the Browns to Chicago. Detroit, easily handled the last place Indians, winning 3 straight. St. Louis, on the other hand, faltered. They lost the first 2 games to Chicago, including a 1 hit performance in the game that eliminated them!! ![]() Babe Ruth hit’s 6 home runs, in easily his best season. He hits over 300, and is tied for 2nd in RBI’s. His power rating did improve to 9/19, so that’s encouraging, but he needs to get on that development horse soon, time is ticking! ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by George_Bell; 02-12-2014 at 05:12 PM. |

![]() It’s a rematch of the 1917 World Series, which the saw Detroit celebrate for the first time. This is Bostons third straight appearance, and 4th in 5 years. |

1918 World Series
![]() Braves ace Chief Bender is unable to get it done in game 6, and the Tigers force a game in Detroit. 20 game winners Doc Ayers and Ed Karger battle it out in a very tight game 7. The score was tied at 2 after 8 innings. Tigers leave Karger in for the 9th inning. George Moriarty gets a leadoff single. He moves to 2nd on a sac bunt, and steals third. Ty Cobb sends a fly ball to left field, deep enough to score Moriarty. Doc Ayers gets Detroit in order, and a Sac Fly wins the World Series for Boston! |

I cannot believe Dots Miller is still playing! He is always out of my league in less than 5 years...good on fictional him this go round I have 2 Sammy Vick (who was in the Shoeless Joe trade) was the Ed Norton (Honeymooners) of the Yankees...he was 160lbs but apparently could eat like a horse and not gain weight. He is noted for being the rare PH for Ruth, but that is not true. However, when Ruth was traded to the Yankees, Vick was the odd man out, and became the second trade where they Yankees hosed the Red Sox, as he was one of the players traded for Wally Schang and Waite Hoyt. Hoyt would go on to become the winningest P in World Series history (since beaten by another Yankee Whitey Ford) and if not for his alcoholism, would have been so much better. BUZZ ARLETT Was called the Babe Ruth of the PCL The reason he is highly rated in OOTP yet you never heard of him? He was a spitball P, his career was over in that are when the spitball was disallowed, he would have not been grandfathered in MLB which caused MLB scouts to back off, then he hurt his arm, and they disappeared. He was also a wretched fielder, like Riggs Stephenson, who you will meet soon in the draft...he couldn't judge a fly ball, or scoop a slightly errant throw He IS the U.S. minor league HR king... the two Mexican league guys Hector Epino and Andres Mora have to be taken with a grain of salt. He was also the minor league RBI king, and was beaten by Tomato Face Nick Cullop, not your Pitcher of the year, the OFer He also is a reason I rarely see eye to eye with SABR...they named him the greatest minor leaguer of all time, but he was a DH essentially and cost his teams runs in the field on numerous occasions, and even the bottom dwelling Phillies were eventually forced to only use him as a PH in his 1 yr tryout. He also was a big guy with a bad work ethic (Less than 50 in OOTP terms) scouts didn't like his demeanor when he was losing, and he went from 180lbs to 240lbs OOTP will always love him, but if historical perspective was fixed, he'd go 3rd round not #1 He was a monster with the bat though, but when I think greatest PCL position player of all time, I go with Jigger Statz then Eddie Mulligan (main man on Portland's 1910-20 dynasty) then Buzz

Fantastic stories Carlton, it's great to hear these tales about these names I'm not familar with.
That's a wealth of info on Buzz Arlett. OOTP Buzz looks to be a tad more talented in the field then real life Buzz. OOTP Buzz can probably play a decent OF, but he's still stuck in the minors after a whole season, and not nearly developed yet. He's got the potential to be a great hitter. |

1918-19 Offseason News and Notes
Sam Crawford and Nap Lajoie both have hung up their cleats. Crawford only played in 69 games his final two seasons, but he is truly a all-time great. He led the MLB in 39 categories over his career, including home runs 4 times, and 2 batting titles. He won the 1905 MVP award, and the 1912 World Series. He is Cincinnati's franchise leader in 13 categories, including hits, HR’s, RBI’s, BB’s, and games. He retires ninth on the all-time hit list and fifth on the Home Run list. ![]() Nap Lajoie played to long. He’s the classic case of a legend sticking around when they are done. He played 93 games over his final 4 seasons, and just 1 inning, at first base in his finale. He suffered a horrible injury, that almost ended his career in 1905. He was never a great player again, but he was still productive for the most part. Lajoie led baseball in 36 categories, all before the injury. He won 3 AL MVP awards, but never played a World Series game. His 1901 season will be remembered as the greatest season ever played. He holds the single season record for Batting average, Slugging pct, VOR, Total bases, doubles, and WAR, all achieved in 1901. ![]() Frankie Frisch goes 1st overall to the Indians in the draft, and the man with one of the best names I've seen, Showboat Fisher, goes 2nd. The man Carlton called the greatest PCL hitter of all time, Jigger Statz, is taken late in the first round, to the Browns. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

1919 Regular Season
Finally….The Cardinals have finally promoted Lefty O’Doul to the majors. He should be playing LF, Babe Ruth will play RF, while Tris Speaker takes over in CF. This outfield has a chance to be the best ever if things go well. Babe Ruth is upto 13/19 in power. Baseball’s home run king has been traded. The Boston Braves have dealt the formerly dangerous Gavvy Cravath to the NY Giants in exchange for a minor league reliever. Gavvy is 38, and while he played well in limited action this season, the power is all but gone, the legs are slow, and the arm is weak. He can’t field anymore, but he’s popular, so this will be a boost to the Giants, in their attempt to win fans over from the Yankees and Brooklyn. Check out this news story ![]() Hey, OOTP, one problem here. Mr. Corriden hasn’t hit a home run since 1915!! Was this in his backyard or something?! Just saw another fantastic old name, which I had not seen or heard before. Sad Sam Jones. Low and behold, I look at his real life performance, and he played 21 years, winning 229 games! I can’t believe I have never heard of him before!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() The Chicago Cubs are here based on their pitching. Dutch Leonard is at the top of his game, which means dominance. Walter Johnson, whose declined some, is still effective at 31. Former rookie of the Year Jose Mendez is also a Cub after an offseason trade from Cleveland. |

1919 World Series
The World Series is a best of 9 affair this season. Is the Fix in?! With a chance to win the World Series in game 7, the Cubs sent ace Dutch Leonard to the mound. He had to leave the game in the 2nd inning with a sprained ankle. After he gave up 7 runs in 6 innings during game 4, there were rumblings that the fix was in, and Detroit went onto to win game 7. Was there something actually wrong with his ankle, or was this a chance to get some lesser pitchers into the game, unprepared. How could the fix be in though? Dutch Leonard dominated in game 1, 3 hitting the Tigers. Well, that could have been a message to someone, that the payoff wasn’t enough. Conspiracy theorists suggest that the message was well received, and Leonard then threw games 4 and 7. With Chicago up 1, in the ninth inning of game 8, Dutch Leonard came in to the game to relieve Walter Johnson. The tying run was on 2nd with 2 out. Leonard allowed a fly ball to right, which George Anderson dropped, allowing the tying run to miraculously score. If Detroit goes on to win the game, and the series in 9, then it would seem pretty suspect that all was not on the up and up. Instead, on that bad ankle, Leonard pitched the next 5 innings in scoreless relief. He then came up with 2 runners on and 2 out in the 14th. Leonard lined a 2-2 pitch to CF, scoring the go ahead run. Leonard came back out to the mound, and got the Tigers 1-2-3. Game over, World Series over. Cubs WIN! Was there a plan for Dutch Leonard and the Cubs to throw the World Series? Did Dutch have a sudden change of heart? Was it all nonsense? We’ll probably never know. What we do know is Dutch Leonard is know a World Series hero! ![]() |
