Apparently there was some "drama" writing by the author of that piece in ESPN's The Magazine and some of Kinsler's comments were taken out of context. Doesn't change things, and Ian didn't exactly retract what he said, which does confirm there is some bad blood between him and Daniels.

Not surprising, given he was the last person to know about the trade! I'd be pissed, too.

Suggested reading: Tom Gage's interview of Kinsler.

Injury news:

OF Andy Dirks is to undergo a microdiscectomy surgery Monday morning, and will be out for a minimum of 12 weeks. (A microdiscectomy is the surgical removal of herniated disc material that presses on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Ausmus had the same procedure done in 2010.)

He will have 3 weeks of rest and 3 weeks of rehab before resuming baseball-related activities.

Wonder what LF bat will replace him from the in-house pool of candidates. They've got Ezequiel Carrera, Trevor Crowe, and of course, The donkelly. Then again, Rajai Davis could just go full-time.

Guess it's a "wait-and-see" thing.

Best of wishes for a successful surgery and speedy recovery for Andy.

Pirates 5, Tigers 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Pirates tame Tigers as pitching falters.

Pitching: Porcello was in fine form - except for the last of the 3 innings he worked, when the Pirates rocked him for 3 runs on 2 singles, 2 doubles, and an RBI groundout. He gave up a total of 5 hits and whiffed 1 for the loss.

Krol tossed a perfect 4th, striking out 2.

Nathan worked a flawless 5th. He hasn't allowed a baserunner in 3 appearances this spring.

Jhan Marinez, an NRI, punched out one in a solid 6th inning outing.

Chamberlain took over in the 7th and allowed a hit while striking out 1.

Justin Miller had a hit, unearned run, and a strikeout in the 8th.

Rondon had a bad day as he worked the 9th, yielding 2 hits, a run, and striking out 3 - but one of the runners reached first on a wild pitch.

Offense: The Cats had 7 hits and 3 walks, but unfortunately, they stranded 7 and hit into a double play. They had a chance to score some runs in the bottom of the 9th with the bases loaded, but came up short.

Here's the list of the good stuff:

Davis, 1-3.
Lombardozzi, 0-3, reached on an error and scored a run.
Jackson, 1-2, a walk and a 2-run HR in the 4th. (Jackson has gone 8-13 with 7 RBI this spring batting lower in the order. Methinks he's found his spot.)
The donkelly, 2-3, a double and SB.
T. Crowe, a walk.
R. Cabrera, 1-1 and a walk.
E. Suarez, 1-4.
H. Perez, 1-3, a double.

Next game: Wednesday, March 5th, Tigers @ Astros, 1:05 Eastern
- Detroit Radio: WXYT 1270

Tigers 3, Astros 0. [Boxscore]

Summary
: Cats paws shackle Astros.

Pitching: The staff did a terrific job today, holding the Astros to 3 hits and 3 walks while punching out 8. They certainly look ready for regular season already, especially Scherzer.

Max went 3 innings, giving up just one hit while striking out 3. He was credited with the win, bringing his ST record to 1-1.

Jose Alvarez worked the 4th and 5th, yielding a hit and a walk while whiffing 1.

Ed Reed tossed the 6th, striking out 1. He's had a good spring go far, betcha he makes the roster when the Cats head north.

Blaine Hardy (NRI) came in for the 7th and struck out 1. Another guy with a solid spring. He's a lefty to boot. I'd have to say the odds of him making a roster somewhere in the Tigers organization look great.

Luke Putkonen trotted in for the 8th, and gave up a hit and got a punch-out.

Jose Valdez closed out the ballgame, and he walked 2 and struck out 1 for his 1st save.

Offense: The Cats had 6 hits (all singles), a walk, and a HBP. Good thing that was all they needed for the win. Here's the list:

Kinsler, 1-2, HBP, and an RBI.
Crowe, 1-4, caught stealing 2nd.
The donkelly, 1-3, walk, run scored.
Lennerton, 1-3.
Castenellos, 1-4, SB.
Carrera, 1-3, run scored. *See note under defense*

Hat trick award: Avila, 3 K's.

Defense: Error: Castenellos, 2nd of spring. DP: 1 (no information).

Note: Carrera may be in the mix for an OF spot due to Dirks's surgery. Not only is he having a good spring hitting (3-9, all singles), but he made two stellar plays in CF: first was a diving catch in shallow CF, and he later fell to the ground on a flyball, holding on despite sun issues. His bat is adequate, but his glove is better.

Next game: Thursday, March 6th, Phillies (SS) @ Tigers, 1:05 Eastern.
- No broadcasts.
- Justin Verlander's ST debut. (Inclement weather is forecast for the game, so he may wind up throwing in the batting cage instead. Either way, he works tomorrow.)

Yankees 3, Tigers 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Yanks edge Tigers due to a balk.

Pitching: Sanchez started the game, and the results were what you would expect from someone in "power pitching" mode - 5K's, a 2-run HR, 2 singles, and a WP over 3 innings. Effective enough to win... but unfortunately...

Ray worked the 4th. The best thing that can be said that he kept the ball in the same area code, but other than that, he had a hard time finding the plate as he issued 2 walks.

Hardy took over for the 5th, and issued 1 walk.

Nathan came on for the 6th, and gave up an infield single along with collecting a punch-out.

Chamberlain for the 7th - another mixed bag, with his slider producing so-so results as he struck out 2, walked 1, gave up a single, and threw a wild pitch. He tossed a total of 24 pitches, which were evenly split on the results.

Ortega was flawless with a K in the 8th.

Marte threw 1/3 of an inning, giving up 2 singles, and had runners on 1st and 3rd before balking in the winning run.

The interesting thing was that it wasn't his fault - an inadvertent signal from Ausmus for a pick-off at 3B was received by Marte - but not the third-baseman, Francisco Martinez. When the time came to throw over, Martinez was not at the bag, so Marte had to eat the ball, resulting in the balk. Ausmus publicly took the blame for incident. Mistakes happen, eh?

Hitting: This was not one of their better offensive outings this spring, with just 7 hits and walk. It would have been enough to win, considering they mixed power with speed, but they just couldn't get enough going. Here's the list in order:

Miggy, 1-3, a double in the 1st.
Avila, 1-2, a single and walk.
Jackson, 1-3 with an RBI triple, run scored, and his 1st SB. (Trying to figure how how he stole a base when he was on third and Lombardozzi drove him in. The Yanks had 1 error, so he must have been the recipient and stole 2nd.)
Lombardozzi, 2-3 with an RBI and SB (2nd of ST).
Castenellos, 1-3, with an SB (2nd of ST).
F. Martinez, 1-1.

So far in 10 games for the Cats, they have 13 steals and just 2 HR. Kinda hard to get used to seeing the team steal this much with reduced power numbers. This is gonna be a very interesting season.

Next game: Saturday, March 8th, Mets @ Tigers, 1:05 Eastern.
- Detroit Radio: 97.1 The Ticket.

News and notes:

1. LHP Will Ledezma, who pitched for the Tigers for 4 seasons, has signed a minor-league contract with the Cats. He spent 2013 in Japan after lasting pitching with the Blue Jays in '12. He's an average pitcher and would do nicely as an injury substitution - or in place of a Phil Coke meltdown.

2. Jose Iglesias. He's been out for the past 10 days with shin splints, and took light batting practice recently. He's a bit better, but looks like he'll be out another week.

3. Casey Crosby. He's been sidelined with elbow irritation issues and hasn't thrown in a Grapefruit league game yet this year. He tossed some high-speed pitches during batting practice, and his curveball looked good. Not sure if he'll ever get a chance to play this spring.

4. Doug Fister was scratched from a game with elbow irritation, and a precautionary MRI revealed no structural damage. Hope he'll be alright and goes on to help the Nats out this season. Hate it when guys go down with arm issues, but that's part of the game.

Mets 3, Tigers 2. [Boxscore]

Summary: Mets top Cats in low-scoring affair.

Pitching: The starting pitching is fine, but the bullpen, the weakest link on the roster, continues to show some major concerns.

Drew Smyly started the game, and tossed three scoreless innings, striking out 3 while yielding 3 singles and a walk. Lots of off-speed pitches.

Luke Putkonen handled the 4th and 5th innings, giving up a single while whiffing 3.

Phil Coke... once again, he gets hammered, giving up 2 singles and a walk to load the bases with no outs. Fortunately, he induced a double play ball to limit the damage to just one run. A diving catch from Carrera in the LF gap let Coke escape without any further damage two outs later.

What's even more concerning is that his location this spring has been horrible (the walk was to a lefty!), and his FB is down to 88 from the mid-90's. This spring, in 4 innings over 4 appearances, he's given up 9 hits, 1 walk, 4 runs, and gotten 2 K's. They're hitting him at a .474 clip and he carries a 2.50 WHIP.

I really hope the team doesn't carry him when they go north, or they will regret it. They have better LHP options (Ledzema, et al) now.

Bruce Rondon was sharp, fireballing a perfect 7th inning and striking out one.

Al Alburquerque was his usual so-so self - 3 K's, a single, and a walk. He's gonna be trouble down the line. Wish the Tigers would replace him with someone else - I don't care if he can throw high-octane, because if he can't keep his pitches in the same zip code as the ballpark, he's no good.

Justin Miller took over for the last inning, and boy, did he stink. With one out, he issued a walk and a single, putting runners at the corners. A double by Clark cleared the bases and cost the team the win. He also had a strikeout, not that it mattered.

Offense: Yet another low-scoring affair. They've swiped 15 bases so far this spring (17 in each of the last 2 years; the highest in recent times was 20 in 2006), including their third double steal (The donkelly and Fields) in the past 8 days.

The Cats had a total of 5 hits (2 doubles), and 5 walks. Here's how they did.

Kinsler, 1-3, double in the 6th, and then he was doubled off on a line-drive catch by Seratelli.
Hunter, 1-2, a single, walk, and a CS in the 4th inning.
Moya, 1-1, a double.
The donkelly, 1-2, single, walk, SB (2), and a run scored.
Castenellos, 0-3, walk.
Fields, 0-2, 2 walks, a SB (2), and a run scored.
Lombardozzi, 1-3, 2nd inning single to drive in The donkelly and Fields.

Defense: DP, 2. (No further info available on those.)

Next game: Sunday, Tigers @ Marlins, 1:05 Eastern. Scheduled starter: Porcello.
- Detroit Radio: WXYT 1270.
- Miami Radio: 940 AM WINZ.

Tigers 3, Marlins 1. [Boxscore]

Summary: Arms brilliant in win, bats not so much.

Pitching: The Tigers pitching staff really put the screws on the Marlins, scattering 7 hits and striking out 11. I'm pretty impressed with the way the unit (despite certain individuals Who Shall Not Be Named), has performed this spring.

Porcello started the game and went the longest any Tiger has this spring, 3.1 innings, yielding 4 hits (3 singles and a solo HR) while striking out 3. His changeup is definitely in form. An interesting note is that while lefty hitters generally give him a headache, in this game, in 9 plate appearances, the Marlins managed just one hit. Now if he can just do that during the regular season...

Jhan Marinez (NRI) finished off the 4th, allowing a single and striking out one.

Evan Reed worked two perfect innings, the 5th and 6th, whiffing 2. This guy continues to quietly impress this spring, and he's garnered quite a bit of attention from the Tigers.

(In 6 innings over 5 appearances this spring, he's given up 2 hits, 1 run (1.50 ERA) and struck out 8 while walking none. Quite the contrast to his 2013 with the Cats, where he was 0-1 with a 4.24 ERA and an ugly 1.54 WHIP.

If the Tigers option to carry only one lefty (and it won't be He Who Must Not Be Named), he could go north as the 6th righty, especially since he's out of options. If he gets waived, he'll be snapped up, especially with his high-90's fastball.)

Ian Krol worked a flawless 7th, striking out one. Best guess is that he's the lefty that goes north. This spring, he's worked 4 innings, gave up 1 hit, and struck out 5 while walking 1.

Jose Alvarez (LHP) tossed the final 2 innings, turning into a strikeout machine with 4 K's while giving up 2 singles. Granted, it was a lefty-heavy lineup, but those kind of numbers from him are enough to raise an eyebrow or two.

All in all, a terrific effort.

Hitting: Not so terrific an effort on this side of the plate. Granted, they had 10 baserunners (4 hits, 6 walks), and it's spring training, but still... ugh. Just brings back ugly memories from last year's feast-or-famine team.

Here's who did what:

Crowe, 1-4, a single.
Miggy, 1-2, a single and a walk.
Lennerton, Walk and a run scored.
Avila, 1-2, 2-run RBI Double in the 8th.
Collins, 1-3, solo HR (1) to RF in the 7th and a walk.
Perez, A walk, SB (1), and a run scored.

Castenellos and Holaday both had walks, but went hitless. Castenellos also got caught stealing.

Next game: Monday, March 10, Tigers @ Cardinals, 1:05 Eastern.
- Detroit TV: FS-D; Radio: WXYT 1270.
- St. Louis TV: FS-M.

Starter: Scherzer, to be followed by Kyle Lobstein, Casey Crosby, Jose Ortega, Blaine Hardy and Melvin Mercedes.

This will be Crosby's first ST game - he's been battling elbow problems, remember?

I'm really excited about seeing this game on TV, it'll be the first glimpse I've had of the Cats this spring. And it's Max to boot!

Note: Iglesias is still hobbled by those danged splints, and there's more than a little concern that he won't be ready for Opening Day.

He who must not be named, must have some connections in the front office. Last season's performance was abysmal; especially given the role of "situational" lefty, dictates that left handed hitters should not be allowed to bat .299 against you. I'm listening to games on the radio, and even Jim Price is confounded. His velo is down to high 80s, which I guess is ok if you're Jamie Moyer and damn near 50; but it just doesn't work for him (even in ST). So, why is he still here? Even Valverde only got 2 chances.

They didn't have any other left-handed relievers available other than Smyly, even at Toledo, unless you want to count Alvarez, who was a starter.

This year, it's different, as they have several candidates - Krol, Hardy, and Lobstein. Crosby is coming off an injury and isn't anywhere near ready yet (not to mention control issues), Ray isn't ready, and Below is not quite a major-league pitcher.

The situation is pretty muddled right now, but it'll shake out one way or another. Ausmus will go with who is best for the team.

Tigers 17, Cardinals 5. [Boxscore]

Summary: Cats maul Cards behind power surge.

Pitching: Scherzer was the starter for this one, and thanks to his efficient pitching, he lasted 4.2 innings, expending just 56 pitches. He gave up two singles, walked one, and struck out 5.

Watching the game on TV, it looked like he picked up from where he left off at the end of last year - some of his breaking stuff was just nasty, with his curveball breaking in a clean 12-6 arc almost like it hit a brick wall and fell straight down. As a matter of fact, just about all of his off-speed stuff handcuffed the Cards. If he had no pitch count limits, I could see him easily breaking 10 strikeouts and getting a shutout.

Blaine Hardy, one of the NRI lefties, was considerably less impressive, yielding a single and walk in 2/3 of an inning total. He's not a hard thrower, but at least he keeps the ball in the yard.

Crosby (LHP) took over after one out in the 6th and finished off the inning in his first ST appearance this year. He was all over the map as you'd expect from someone with considerable "rust" who also has a history of control issues. He had a flyout to CF, BB, and K in that order. He'll start the season at Toledo without a doubt, and I hope he gets his control under... control. Heh.

Lobstein (LHP) handled the 7th and 8th, and he didn't do himself any favors with a total line of 2 innings, 4 hits (3 singles and a 3-run HR), a walk, and 3 punch-outs.

The 7th was his trouble: BB, K, K, single, run-scoring single, 3-run HR. In the 8th, two 6-3 grounders, a single, and a 4-6 groundout. Just a sloppy performance.

Jose Ortega finished off the game, and he, too, was a bit sloppy with a double and a walk... and the guy on 2B scored when the walk-issuing final toss turned out to be a wild pitch. Figures. On the plus side, he got 2 K's.

About the only one I was impressed with was Scherzer.

Hitting: Whoa. The Cats came up BIG in this one with 22 hits and 4 walks, and I loved watching every minute of it. It was just... incredible. Here's the long list.

Davis, 3-4, a single and SB (3) in the 3rd, a run-scoring single later in the same inning, and a run-scoring double in the 4th.
Carerra, 1-4, a run-scoring double to LF in the 4th, scored later in the 4th on one of Miggy's 2 homers.
Miggy, 3-4, a single and a pair of 2-run homers (2), one in the 3rd, the other in the 4th. [Video of 3rd inning homer] [Video of 4th inning homer]
Holaday, 1-2, a double for his first hit of ST. He shaved the beard he had before and got a hit. Go figure. He looks better without it.
Avila, 1-3, a single, walk, and a run scored.
Albernaz, a minor leaguer, HBP and a run scored.
The donkelly, 1-2, a single and 2 walks, along with a run scored.
Lennerton, 1-2, a single and a run scored.
Lombardozzi, 1-3, a single, walk, and a run scored.
Suarez, 2-2, both of them singles.
Castellanos, 3-4, two singles and a 3-run HR (2) for 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. One single, which drove in a run, was whistled right past Jhonny Peralta. If the guy had a little more range... heh. We all know how that goes with him. [Video of HR]
Moya, 3-6, a single, double, and triple, along with 2 runs and 4 RBI. He also had 3 K's, but what a day he had!
Worth, 2-4, both hits were doubles, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI.

Defense: DP: 1, 1st inning: (Lombardozzi-Worth-Kelly). Also of note, Castellanos made a barehanded, high-risk play off the infield grass in the first inning for a bang-bang play at 1B that had me cheering, it was flawless. Worthy of an ESPN Web Gem, if you ask me.

Next game: Tuesday, March 11: Blue Jays @ Tigers, 1:05 Eastern. Verlander starts for 1st time in ST.
- Toronto Radio: SN590.
- Detroit Radio: WXYT 1270.

Dirks update: His surgery to repair a herniated disc was successful, with no complications reported. He'll be out for 3 months, which should put his return date somewhere around late June or early July (post-ASB?), depending on rehab.

Best wishes on a successful recovery, Andy.

I think a majority of his issues last year stemmed from the hidden injury he had with his core muscles that wasn't discovered until the off-season and required surgery back on January 9th. The injury would have effected his control, which was a bit erratic.

I believe another part of the issue was psychological - the team wasn't scoring runs in close games, so he kept trying to be perfect in every game and unconsciously beat himself up when he didn't get the win for the team, which will not help anyone, fierce competitor or not.

There's also some school of thought that part of it was from the off-season two years ago, which was filled with distractions galore for him, resulting in less training time and reduced conditioning.

Or it simply could have been all of those issues together, but whatever the true reason(s) for last season's performance, I think he's been brought back to reality and will produce well this year. Who knows, last season might have been the best thing for him career-wise.

Anyway, he has a 50-55 pitch count limit today, depending on how he's feeling and how quickly his innings go. He's not reported any issues this spring in the side sessions and BP he's thrown, so he should be fine, he just needs to knock some rust off.

(Whether he's the Opening Day starter or not isn't a big deal as far as I'm concerned. What's more important is that he returns to being the dominant JV we know he can be. Just remember, he's historically a slow starter and builds up steam as the year goes on, like a steam locomotive of ages past.)

I'm really hoping that Max, Anibal and Justin are willing and able to rely a little more on the defense this season. Strikeouts are cool, but quick innings are cooler. Now that Miggy is where he belongs and we have a defensive monster at short, quick innings should be a lot easier to come by.

Blue Jays 3, Tigers 2. (10) [Boxscore]

Summary: Verlander sharp in ST debut.

Pitching: JV had a terrific debut today, throwing 52 pitches (36 strikes) over 3.2 innings, giving up just a single and walking 2 while whiffing 2 on a low 90's fastball (peak: 94), a sharp curveball, and several changeups. Once he busts out that venomous slider of his... oi vey. [Video recap of his performance]

His catcher for the day, Holaday, said that "he's definitely there mentally", and Ausmus indicated after the game that JV is "not far behind, at all." He'll be ready for Opening Week, no doubt of that.

Robbie Ray finished off the 4th inning with a flawless performance, and then departed.

Coke came in for the 5th, gave up a hit, and struck out two. He was more aggressive this time around.

(Might be too little, too late. He has a $1.9 Million non-guaranteed contract, and the Tigers have to make a decision by Saturday (the 15th) on whether to keep him on the roster or not. If they release him, they only have to pay him $320K. If he's waived between March 16th and Opening Day on the 31st, they're on the hook for $475K. Otherwise, they own him the whole thing, sour performance or not.)

Nathan took over for the 6th, yielding a hit. Did nothing else of consequence but get the hitters out.

Chamberlain got rocked in the 7th, giving up 2 hits (1 HR), 2 runs, and issuing 2 walks. Let's hope he doesn't do this very often in the regular season...

Alburquerque tossed a flawless 8th, striking out 2. As a matter of fact, he was the only Tiger reliever not to get tagged for a hit. Wonder what he had for breakfast, because he should eat that every day.

Rondon got tagged for 2 hits in the 9th, but kept the hitters from scoring, always a good sign for him. He's matured as a pitcher, and I think he'll do a terrific job as the set-up guy.

Mercedes threw the 10th, and give up the fatal solo-shot HR that sunk the Tigers.

Offense: They had a total of 7 hits and 4 walks in this one. Here's who did what:

Kinsler, 1-3, a single.
Lennerton, 0-1, with a walk.
Davis, 1-3, a single.
Crowe, 0-1, with a walk and got caught stealing 2nd.
Miggy, 1-3, a single.
Travis, 0-1, a walk.
Hunter, 2-3, a single and double.
Jackson, 1-3, a single and run scored.
The donkelly, 1-3, a 2-run HR (1) in the 2nd. (Yes, he's performing well - but kindly note he's a ST player who fails to hit much during the regular season.) (No video of HR)
Worth, a walk.

Defense: Double plays, 2. (No info available)

Next game: Wednesday, March 12, Tigers @ Yankees, 1:05 Eastern. Tigers SP: Sanchez.

- NY TV: YES
- Subscription TV: MLBN.

Note: Iglesias took BP, jogged a bit, and then reported he's doing the best he has since being sidelined back on February 27th. Still, I doubt he'll be ready for Opening Day.
