There's hope for sportmanship yet in baseball. Perhaps dignity and class are not just for losers these days.

In today's game, a fifth-inning fastball from Justin Verlander rode in on Derek Jeter, hitting him in the elbow. Jeter was padded and therefore not hurt, but it looked like it stung him a bit.

Jeter took his base and Verlander went back to the mound. Then a moment occurred that greatly impressed me.

Verlander stepped off the rubber, looked over to first base, and gave a wave of his gloved hand to Jeter as if to say, "Sorry, dude. Didn't mean that." A classy gesture.

You sports turks out there, you guys who think it is a sign of weakness to show some concern and decency in competition, below is Verlander's line from today's box score. It does not seem that his small display of humanity had any effect whatsoever on his ability to kick our ass today.

*sigh* we couldn't even split the series. The only real bright spot was Hughes ... again!! He's looking VERY good this year.

And, the bright spot about Hughes is that he's only 23!

23 for another month! This could be just a momentary peak for him, but if not, I will be looking like this soon:

First play of the game and Gardner makes it a sparkler in CF!

Arbitration-eligible or not, I'm getting ready to throw some Yankee cash at this guy. What the heck, it's not my money!

I've always liked Gardner. But, is he the fastest guy in baseball today?

Kind of surprising, given the others on that list. For example, #2 stole 61 SB's last year. See who is number 15? That shows you how authoritative this list is. #1 and #15 need some more playing time to rank with the others.

"Fast" could be who can run to first base in 3 seconds. "Fast" can also be who can dominate and break up a game with his speed and baserunning skills, and who can be an offensive force with a high OBP and 50+ SB's for the season.

Brett had 13 SB's in 2008 and 26 SB's in 2009. He already has 17 this year, mainly because he's been playing regularly. His batting has only come around in 2010. He needs a full season as a quality starter to make this list, in my opinion. #15 should not be on there either for the same reason.

Maybe I'm taking too narrow a view of it, but "fast" to me means "game changer" capability, not just quickness on the basepaths. Gardner is just now showing that capability. If he stays up there in OBP and SB's for this whole season, then yes, add him to the list.

Heh, I don't think he's #1 even then, because some of the other guys are quicker than him. That's the other meaning of "fast."

All that said, boy am I glad the Yankees kept Gardner around. I used to rank Cabrera ahead of him on my Yankees depth chart!

theres so much that can go into "fastest player". is it fastest from home to first? fastest from 1st to third? who can cover the most ground in the outfield?

stuff like stealing bases is much more than just pure speed, otherwise you'd see a guy like usain bolt signing an mlb contract. everything from acceleration, reading pitchers, having that instict of when to go, so much

TB is built perfectly IMO. A great mix of speed and power. The only saving grace to think about is the Yankees are not 100% right now. They have some key injuries, and even with those injuries, they scored 12 runs against them. Our pitchers let us down in this series.

A couple of notes:

1. Robertson throwing 2 perfect innings with 4 strikeouts is GREAT to see. I really like this kid. All he needs to do is get his head screwed on straight and I think he's going to be dangerous.

2. Tommy boy, this is why I really like Crawford. I definately think he's worth Damon type money: New York nearly took the lead, but Crawford's sensational catch in left field limited Randy Winn to a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Crawford singled home the go-ahead run the next inning.

Hopefully, the Yankees can get it back on track with a trip to "Shea".

*sigh* Yanks are reeling badly. Their pitching is turning in-effective and their hitting is banged up and slumping. Not a good mixture.

Right now, TB is the better team, no question. I think they will be good all year.

But the Yankees will still be the team to beat by the time this year is done.

Need a starting pitcher?

You remember this guy?

From ESPN today

GARDENA, Calif. -- Former New York Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was arrested for alleged drunken driving in suburban Los Angeles.

Gardena police Lt. Steve Prendergast says Irabu was stopped May 17 when officers saw him drifting outside traffic lanes and he nearly collided with a parked car.

Records show the 41-year-old Irabu, who lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, posted $5,000 bail.

Prendergast says prosecutors will decide what specific charge will be filed against Irabu when results of his blood test are received in about a month.

Irabu pitched for the Yankees, Montreal Expos and Texas Rangers from 1997 to 2002.

He returned to Japan and the Kochi Fighting Dogs in 2009 before suffering a knee injury.

An attorney for Irabu could not be located and there is no phone listing for him.

I noticed, by the way, that the Mets retired the word itself, [former Mets ballpark name], along with their retired player numbers. Take a look, it's hung right on the Citi Field wall!

So, I guess none of us has the right to say [former Mets ballpark name] any more. Joe, please warn yourself.

I just checked. I can't give myself a warning

When will the offense wake up? I'm glad we won, but 1-0???

Deep slumps by Jeter, Texeira, and Gardner. A-Rod not doing so hot either. Only bright spots remain Cano and Cervelli, maybe Swisher who seems to be exceeding expectations so far (game winner HR tonight, for example).

This kid Kevin Russo is doing well, too. I was surprised to see that he plays LF as well as 2B/3B. With that versatility, he might just stick if he continues to swing a decent bat.
