Dear Ella Mae,

I am doing fine, and I miss you a lot. We got settled into our place, have to find some dishes and pans now.

It will help a lot to save up some money if we can do some of the cooking ourselves.

Some of the fellows are teasing me about wearing an apron, but they do like the chicken and potatoes that I can fix up. I have asked them not to spread it around that you done showed me a little about my way into the kitchen.

After July, and before school starts back up, I would like you to consider travelling with me, or at least staying up here in Chicago. You could look after the place while we are gone, and we could see a lot more of each other.

Say hi to your folks for me, and take care of yourself.

Dear Bubba,

Thank you for the lovely scarf! It was so nice of you! I received your letter, and I am glad that you and the Cubs are doing so well.

After talking with my mother and father, they felt that it would not be appropriate, even after we were married, for me to come up to Chicago.

Our home is here in El Dorado, and there is so much to be done to get our house set up properly.

I would like to visit, and travel to New York and Philadelphia, but not as a regular pattern. Would you mind if my mother and I would do this? Mother has never been out east, and would dearly love the opportunity.

You have told me of some of the women who travel with the ball players, and I would not wish to be mistaken for one of them. With mother and I travelling together, my parents would feel much better about it.

My mother and father have asked for me to send on their best wishes to you...and father has informed me that he shall support your fathers nomination for State Representative for District 3. I don't know how your father will feel when the Arkansas Democratic Party shows up at your door and says--"You're it!" He doesn't even know he is being considered for the position.

School is fine, except for Tommy Babbitt. He spilled his inkwell all over Chrissy Montgomery, ruined her dress, and made an enormous mess. He claims it was an accident, but I surely know better. Mr. Cloudy took him up to the office, and we could hear the spanking all the way back here!

A long night ended badly for the home team last night, as the
Cubs dropped a 5-4 decision to the Miami Hurricanes.

The game ended 6 hours and 28 minutes after it started, and
lasted until nearly 1:30 this morning.

Thc Cubs wasted 18 hits, and never could break through against
the Miami pitching staff.

"I left Bubba in too long" lamented Manager Clarkson, as
the New Yorkers scored 3 in the seventh to beat our Cubs.

It was "Boss Hogg" Ogg who gave up the hit that proved to be
the game winner, as the Cubs dropped their third straight.

Greg Mort pitched wonderfully well in relief of Bubba Jones
today, saving the third victory of this young season for
the big right-hander.

Mort struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win,
allowing Chicago to claim a share of first place with the
Hurricanes and Cardinals.

Said pitcher Jones after the game---"I didn't have my best stuff,
although me and Greg struck out 14 of them!"

Cubs slam Buffalo!

The Chicago Cubs, in their biggest offensive display in three
years, crushed the Buffalo ball club today 15-3.

"Big O" Oscar McHone ran his record to 4-2 with the victory today.

Said the Buffalo manager Cranston---"Holy ****!, everytime I looked
up they was getting another hit...I swear I even saw an usher grab a
bat, and HE got a hit."

The Cubs start the month of May well, winning a hard-fought
6-4 decision this afternoon.

Bruce McCourt, until as of late toiling away at Rockford,
smacked a triple with the bags drunk to give the Cubs a
4-1 lead.

Said Manager Cranston after the game---"I think Bruce has
earned the spot as our right fielder....Teston just wasn't
getting it done."

The Cubs, with this victory, have claimed sole possession of
first place, a game up on the Cardinals, and three up on the
slumping Miami Hurricanes.

Cranston ponders a moment..."He sure eats up innings for us. He is strong as an ox, and is pretty hard-nosed."

"I see his ERA is just under 4 for the year...that places it 5th or 6th on the team...is he just lucky?

Cranston laughs....."Naw, 4 runs a game with our hitting should win him a lot of games. I really like this kid, and I hear he is getting married over the All-Star break."

"Is there a problem here? Is it to an Annie?"

"NO, no, nothing like that...girl back home, a school teacher, I think. A nice girl, from a good family."

"OK Del, thanks for the input....we were thinking of a two year deal for each, at 10 thou per for Krebs, and 5 thousand per year for Jones. What do you think?"

"Walt, Krebs is worth every penny, and Bubba might just pitch for free. This is very generous for both, more than double what they are making now."

"Heh, heh, the ball park is packed every time Bubba pitches, I think we can justify it! We make 50 thousand dollars every time he starts, and we pay him......what, about 80 dollars a start!"

"You know some day, Walter, the players will figure this out, and there will be hell to pay!"

"Yeah, we'll cross that bridge when it comes to it. I have to go, Del, see you in the funny papers!"

"Take care, Walt, thanks for calling."

I struggled with the money issue for Bubba....I can say, in real life, that Babe Ruth earned 80 thousand dollars a year with the Yankees.

Ruth, when pressed about his salary was told it was more than the President of the United States made....to which he replied--"Well, I had a better year!"

The amount of 5,000 a year, for a second year pitcher I think is representative.

Dear Mom and Daddy,

Hi! I am fine, with big news!

The skipper brought me a contract to sign this morning, and it was for ten thousand dollars!!!!

It is for a two year deal, and boy did I sign that real quick! They even gave me a bonus of five hundred dollars! That is what this check is for, to help expand the building for the hogs.

I sat down with Mr. Brodie, from the main office, and he is helping me to set up something called an annuity, which will take about half of the money I will be payed, and put it into long-term government securities. Mr. Brodie says that after I get done playing base ball, this will provide me with a monthly income, and the longer I pay into this fund, the more per month I will get.

He said the money is safe, and is protected by that new FDIC law that the Congress passed.

I will tell Ella Mae when I see her that there will be money for when we get older....not counting the farm or her teachers pay of course. I am pleased to get the raise in pay, as when Ella Mae and I start a family, I am sure she will stay home with the children.

Daddy, it is swell that you have been asked to be our Representative...will you have enough time to go to Little Rock to the meetings if you are elected? I know Charlie and Jeb can watch the farms while you are gone.

We are in first place, and I have won 4 games already. Things are going real good....although I am getting real nervus about being married in just two months!

Bubba Jones continues to benefit from the Cubs hot hitting,
as the right-hander goes to 5-1 on the year.

Fredric Sims, getting hot after a very slow start (2 RBI in
the first 16 games) hit a Grand Salami in the 8th to put the
game away.

The Cubs are seemingly for real this year, on a pace to win
over a hundred games.

Lefty Marc Walters is poised to come off of the disabled list
this week, but Manager Cranston has indicated that he likes
how the youngsters are pitching, and would not like to change
the rotation at this point. Said Cranston---"I'd be a fool to do
anything other than take the lineup card to the umpire at this point."

The Cubs looked flat today, against a bad Cinncinatti club.

The game was quickly out of reach, and only a 2 run double by
Teston avoided the shutout.

Bubba Jones took the loss, allowing 13 baserunners on the day.

Harry Krebs did extend his hitting streak to a seasons high 16 games.

It was a real thriller at the ball park last night!

Starter Jones was in trouble all night, but seemed to
get the clutch strikeout when he needed it most! Jones is
now third in the league in strikouts, and 3rd as well in
victories.

Reliever Mort came on in the ninth, and made it mighty
exciting, before striking out their clean-up man Dabney with
the bases loaded to end the game.

The Tiger manager Hoffman was ejected in the first inning, over
a close play at first base. This created a tense game, enjoyed
very much by the capacity crowd.

Detroit remains in first place in their division, and the Cubs
stretch their lead to 2 games with the win.

The Cubs, at 27-16 are on pace to win 102 games this year.

Eight in a row! The Cubs are playing brilliantly, and
the Cubs fans are going wild!

The Cubs are now 32-16 on the year, and have opened up
a 4 game lead on second place Miami.

Manager Clarkson pinch hit for pitcher Jones in the 8th
inning, and the move paid handsomely, as McCourt knocked
in two runs, to set up the biggest inning of the year
for the Cubs.

At that point, the rout was on...helping Bubba Jones to
win his team-leading 7th win of the season.

Fredric Sims continued his fine play, hitting yet another
home run for his friend Bubba. Said Sims---"I wished Bubba
could pitch everyday, then I'd be leading the universe in
Home Runs."

Manager Clarkson used the opportunity to pitch "Boss Hogg"
Ogg, who had been struggling of late. Ogg finished the
game up with two scoreless innings, lowering his sky-high
ERA down to 15.75

The Cubs won their franchise-record 11th in a row today, but
it may have been a costly one.

Ace Oscar McHone injured his pitching arm in the very first
inning....and will likely be out for the entire month of June.

Oscar pretty much trashed the clubhouse, with his good hand,
after being taken from the game.

Celebrations were subdued after the victory, as the players know
that McHone is a big reason for their success this year.
Said Manager Clarkson---"We got Marc Walters back, and he is
a fine, fine pitcher. We will miss Oscar a lot, but I think we
will be OK...we don't want to rush Oscar back, and risk a worse
injury."

A whole gaggle of pitchers finished the game for the Cubs, with Innis
picking up his first win.

Right Fielder Williams hit in his 19th straight game, and as you
may know, holds the Major League record at 37.

A solid performance for the Arkansas fireballer, striking
out a season-high 13.

Fredric Sims did not hit his customary home run for his friend,
he hit TWO of them, two run shots in the 1st and 7th innings!

It sure seems like the Cubs score a lot of runs when Bubba pitches!

So, I did the math.

The Cubs score 6.5 runs per start for Bubba, 5.08 runs per start for all others.

Hmmmnnn....is there any wonder he is 8-2, with an ERA of 3.99?

Only once have they scored 0, 1, 2, or 3 runs in a start of his this year.

Bubba gets pounded! HARD!!!

The manager left him in a little too long, as Bubba had 14
strikeouts by the end of the 7th.

Bubba didn't mind, his pitch count was less than usual!

It will help a lot to save up some money if we can do some of the cooking ourselves. Some of the fellows are teasing me about wearing an apron, but they do like the chicken and potatoes that I can fix up. I have asked them not to spread it around that you done showed me a little about my way into the kitchen. After July, and before school starts back up, I would like you to consider travelling with me, or at least staying up here in Chicago. You could look after the place while we are gone, and we could see a lot more of each other. Say hi to your folks for me, and take care of yourself. Bubba

I received your letter, and I am glad that you and the Cubs are doing so well. After talking with my mother and father, they felt that it would not be appropriate, even after we were married, for me to come up to Chicago. Our home is here in El Dorado, and there is so much to be done to get our house set up properly. I would like to visit, and travel to New York and Philadelphia, but not as a regular pattern. Would you mind if my mother and I would do this? Mother has never been out east, and would dearly love the opportunity. You have told me of some of the women who travel with the ball players, and I would not wish to be mistaken for one of them. With mother and I travelling together, my parents would feel much better about it. My mother and father have asked for me to send on their best wishes to you...and father has informed me that he shall support your fathers nomination for State Representative for District 3. I don't know how your father will feel when the Arkansas Democratic Party shows up at your door and says--"You're it!" He doesn't even know he is being considered for the position. School is fine, except for Tommy Babbitt. He spilled his inkwell all over Chrissy Montgomery, ruined her dress, and made an enormous mess. He claims it was an accident, but I surely know better. Ruth, when pressed about his salary was told it was more than the President of the United States made....to which he replied--"Well, I had a better year!" The amount of 5,000 a year, for a second year pitcher I think is representative.

The skipper brought me a contract to sign this morning, and it was for ten thousand dollars!!!! It is for a two year deal, and boy did I sign that real quick! They even gave me a bonus of five hundred dollars! That is what this check is for, to help expand the building for the hogs. I sat down with Mr. Brodie, from the main office, and he is helping me to set up something called an annuity, which will take about half of the money I will be payed, and put it into long-term government securities. Mr. Brodie says that after I get done playing base ball, this will provide me with a monthly income, and the longer I pay into this fund, the more per month I will get. He said the money is safe, and is protected by that new FDIC law that the Congress passed. I will tell Ella Mae when I see her that there will be money for when we get older....not counting the farm or her teachers pay of course. I am pleased to get the raise in pay, as when Ella Mae and I start a family, I am sure she will stay home with the children. Daddy, it is swell that you have been asked to be our Representative...will you have enough time to go to Little Rock to the meetings if you are elected? I know Charlie and Jeb can watch the farms while you are gone. We are in first place, and I have won 4 games already. Chicago Tribune 7 May 1931 Sports Extra Bubba Jones continues to benefit from the Cubs hot hitting, as the right-hander goes to 5-1 on the year. Fredric Sims, getting hot after a very slow start (2 RBI in the first 16 games) hit a Grand Salami in the 8th to put the game away. The Cubs are seemingly for real this year, on a pace to win over a hundred games. Lefty Marc Walters is poised to come off of the disabled list this week, but Manager Cranston has indicated that he likes how the youngsters are pitching, and would not like to change the rotation at this point. Starter Jones was in trouble all night, but seemed to get the clutch strikeout when he needed it most! Jones is now third in the league in strikouts, and 3rd as well in victories. Reliever Mort came on in the ninth, and made it mighty exciting, before striking out their clean-up man Dabney with the bases loaded to end the game. The Tiger manager Hoffman was ejected in the first inning, over a close play at first base. This created a tense game, enjoyed very much by the capacity crowd. Detroit remains in first place in their division, and the Cubs stretch their lead to 2 games with the win. The Cubs, at 27-16 are on pace to win 102 games this year. The Cubs are now 32-16 on the year, and have opened up a 4 game lead on second place Miami. Manager Clarkson pinch hit for pitcher Jones in the 8th inning, and the move paid handsomely, as McCourt knocked in two runs, to set up the biggest inning of the year for the Cubs. At that point, the rout was on...helping Bubba Jones to win his team-leading 7th win of the season. Fredric Sims continued his fine play, hitting yet another home run for his friend Bubba. Said Sims---"I wished Bubba could pitch everyday, then I'd be leading the universe in Home Runs." Manager Clarkson used the opportunity to pitch "Boss Hogg" Ogg, who had been struggling of late. Chicago Tribune 30 May 1931 Sports Extra The Cubs won their franchise-record 11th in a row today, but it may have been a costly one. Ace Oscar McHone injured his pitching arm in the very first inning....and will likely be out for the entire month of June. Oscar pretty much trashed the clubhouse, with his good hand, after being taken from the game. Celebrations were subdued after the victory, as the players know that McHone is a big reason for their success this year. Said Manager Clarkson---"We got Marc Walters back, and he is a fine, fine pitcher. We will miss Oscar a lot, but I think we will be OK...we don't want to rush Oscar back, and risk a worse injury." A whole gaggle of pitchers finished the game for the Cubs, with Innis picking up his first win. The Cubs score 6.5 runs per start for Bubba, 5.08 runs per start for all others. Hmmmnnn....is there any wonder he is 8-2, with an ERA of 3.99? Only once have they scored 0, 1, 2, or 3 runs in a start of his this year.
