BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1887 The New Champion From Boston The World Series has been very unkind to the team going into it with the better record and in 1887 this peculiar trend continued as the Boston Americans took the World Championship from the Chicago White Stockings four games to one.
The saying goes that good pitching will beat good hitting everytime, and in a nutshell that was the story of this series. Chicago had their two best starting pitchers on the shelf and the makeshift rotation just wasnt a match for Bob Black and the hungry Americans. After a good start Chicago ran out of ideas fast and faded quickly. For the Americans and the city of Boston it is a monumental win. The Americans have always played in the shadow of the more popular Beaneaters and now have earned themselves a place in their city's heart. With internal conflict the Beaneaters have struggled and thirsty for a winner the Americans have responded. Nothing grabs the city's imagination like winning, and the other Boston team had done nothing of value since 1879. So the love affair has started with the Americans and the celebrations are well deserved after a convincing series performance. Game 1
WP: Tom Lovett LP: Bob Black Tommy Lovett pitches an excellent game as Chicago comes out strong to open the series; Lovett lets up one run and strikes out seven. Otto Schomerg doubles in two in a three run third as the Whites win in front of over 10,000 people at the West Side Park. Game 2
WP: Lady Baldwin LP: Tom Sullivan S: Fred Goldsmith Chicago blows a 4-1 lead and allowed 11 runs in two innings as Boston cracks out 17 hits and outlasts the home team by two runs to even the series. Tom Daly drives in five runs from the top of the order as netheir team playe very tidy. Fred Goldsmith, the former Chicago man, came in to get the final two out and kill a 9th inning Chicago rally. Game 3
WP: Bob Black LP: The Only Nolan No magic for the Only Nolan as he returns to the big stage of the World Series. Bob Black sets a World Series record with 12 strike outs and has enough to overcome an early 5 run deficit. Ed Andrews and Paul Radford combine to drive in 5 runs as Boston leaves 28 men on base but still win this one with thanks to a three run 8th inning that broke up a one run game. Game 4
WP: Lady Baldwin LP: Tricky Nichols The desicive game of the series goes to the Americans who win in the bottom of the ninth on a Billy Hamilton error in right field after a John Kerins pinch hit single. Tom Lovett had pitched a gem strking out 8 and not allowing an earned run but Boston and scored them all after costly Chicago errors. It is estimated that over 30000 spectators attended this game cramming the outfield in what may have been the best attended game in baseball history. Game 5
WP: Dupee Shaw LP: Steve Toole Seven more errors by the White Stockings and the Americans get the clincher. Popular Dupee Shaw made a suprise start and didnt have his best stuff but went the distance and was on the mound for the final out. Germany Smith drove in three runs in the win. King Kelly batted .636 for Chicago in the series but was obviously not enough. Boston wraps it up at home and the American Assosciation ends their drought by winning a World Series over the National League, their first in six years. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1888 Baseball Continues To Grow ![]() With the game of profesional baseball quickly approaching its 20 year aniversary, few could argue that the popularity of the sport has continued to thrive and spread throughout the land beyond many people's expectations. The game now averages well over 2000 fans per game and the flux of fans at the end of last season to attend the crucuial pennant winning games as well as the World Series was most impressive. Huntington Avenue Grounds of Boston has become the biggest theater in baseball history as its capacity of 42,000 towers over the rest of the league. During a World Series game with the White Stockings last year the Americans drew 38,000 fans, the most of any baseball contest in history. Boston also lead the league in attendance last season, the average attendance numbers were as follows:
The fall of the mighty Boston Beaneters who were one of the most suucesful pioneers of the game is staggering. Fans have flocked over to the Americans as the Beaneaters have failed to produce a winning formula on and off the field. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- White Stockings Look To Get Some Pitching The Chicago White Stockings know exactly why they came up short last season in the World Series at the hands of the Americans. Chicago got killed on the mound and lacked any true stability getting people out. The team did make a move to improve this area as they dealt popular center fielder Billy Sunday to the Baltimore Orioles for starter Norm Baker, Baker is expected to compete and play a role as a starter. The Philadelphia native has yet to start a game in his career, but the Whites are confident he can make the transition. George Derby is expected back in the rotation healthy as he has signed a three year extension. The worry of course is that Derby can not stay healthy for the long season, new conditioning focus for him have been put into place. Adonis Terry gets back on the mound as the team ace as he has won 83 games in his career. Terry will be joined in the rotation by Tom Lovett who proved himself at the end of the season last year as a dependable starter. Tricky Nichols ended his long career as a Chicago reliever and has joined the Cleveland Blues. Everyone knows how good the Chicago offense is, and Fred Dunlap recently put it best, "We dont need all that much (pitching) to win. just keep them under double digits and I will take my chances."

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1888 Beaneaters Back; Swartwood Slams Three After all of the offseason talk about how the Boston Beaneaters were dead and the crosstown rival Americans had taken over, the Beaneaters are back into contention for the affections of the city of Boston. Indeed the Amercicans are the defending World Champions but through an aggresive effort, the Beaneaters are back tugging at the hearstrings of some of their old fans. The Beaneaters have opened the new season 14-9 and are only 1 game out of first place after the opening month. New star Ed Delahanty has had a great impression on his new team and has started his first full season in Boston batting .330 with 16 stolen bases. Big Ed is just the type of player to get an organization excited again. ![]() ![]() Ross Barnes the ultimate man of Boston who has been a star in baseball for as long as anyone can remember and has been a member of this Boston team since it started has been a big influence. Barnes made a number of offseason appearances and has been vocal in trying to get a fanbase back to the South End Grounds. Barnes is batting .295 so far this year at the ripe age of 37. Attendance numbers for the Beaneaters has increased to an average of 2146 fans a game, up from 701 last season. ![]() Ed Swartwood, a 29 year old right fielder for the Baltimore Orioles, acomplished a fist for the game of baseball. On April 22nd Swartwood hit three home runs in a single game against the Boston Americans becoming the first player ever to do so. Swartwood has seven homeruns thus far on the young season and has his eye on the 23 home run single season reacord currently held by Jerry Denny. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kelly Out With Bad Ankle; Whites In Race King Kelly suffered a bad ankle injury early in the season while running the bases. The Whites popular catcher wont be back until mid May as the injury is quite serious and walking without a cane the past week has been impossible. The Whites are 14-10 on the new season and still havent had all the success they would like to have from their pitching arms. Geore Derby has yet to throw a pitch in the new year as the team remains cautious with his fragile arm. The team ERA of 3.06 is only good enough for 6th in the national league. An embarassing 23-7 loss to the Reds on April 21st at home spotlighted what can and will go wrong with the team. Cap Anson continues to produce at all levels. The Chicago legend won the player of the month award around baseball in April and is batting .361 with 24 RBI. Still no one is Chicago expects less then a pennant this season as always on the West side of town. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1888 Hotaling Injury Stalls Career Year ![]() Pete Hotaling has been thrilling fans in Chicago since he came up as a young rookie in the 1878 season. The outfielder has always been plauged by inconsistent play however on some days looking like a superstar and on others like an amatuer. In fact last season Pete heard some of the loudest critisism of his career as the 31 year old outfielder batted only .279 within a lineup that many considered among the best to ever play. Hotaling took the feedback to heart by all accounts worked extra hard this offseason to get his batting eye in order and his game on track, competition after all on a team like Chicago is always a reality. His determination paid off. Monkey Pete put together two of his best months and played some of the best ball of his career. Hotaling was batting .364 going into May 29 and had driven in 26 runs including scoring 41 of his own, 5th in the league. Still as luck would have it Pete pulled up lame going for a flyball in left field and would have to be removed from the lineup. It is a calf strain and the player will be out for 2 to 3 weeks. "It comes at the worst time for me" said Pete who had a visible limp "but i will work hard to get back soon, hopefully Pops (Anson) will have a place in the lineup saved for me." The White Stockings as a team had a rough finish to the month of May. The team went 2-11 in its last 13 games and finished 5 games behind the leading St. Louis Browns. The pitching staff is still way too inconsistent for the teams fortunes, a crucial month of June awaits. In other news the Chicago front office extended the contract of popular catcher King Kelly. Kelly signed on the dotted line for another three years, Kelly remains the most popular player in the city. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1888 Whites Fading Fast, Hope in Draft The Chicago White Stockings are used to being in the pennant race of the National League in every season. This year however their fortunes have faded as the team had yet another losing month at 10-16 and have fallen a full 10.5 game behind the league leading St. Louis Browns. Fans and owners alike would like answers to why the team has underperformed. Age is one of the biggest factors. The team saw Adonis Terry go down again to injury with shoulder pain and inflamation. The pitcher will be lost for the season and many wonder if indeed he has thrown his final pitch in Chicago. With the pitching staff underperforming again, the club is expected to overhaul their pitching staff. Other players like Otto Schomberg (.243) and George Wood (.236) have had trouble getting on base. It seems as if the needed jolt of energy in the dog days of summer has been missing. The team looked to the amatuer draft to bring in some faces to deepen the team. The top picks for Chicago were: Round 1: Dave Anderson SP - Although many scouts dont like this pick. The 19 year old left hander from Pennsylvania is a smart kid who the team hopes can become a legitimate starter. Anderson will get chance to learn on the job as he will get some starts after the Terry injury. ![]() Round 2: Billy Earle C - The "little globetrotter" as they call him has all of the scouts raving at his skill. Earle has a great arm and a strong potential at the plate, he is quite mature for his age and the team loves his work ethic. Earle is expected to get the call at catcher while King Kelly is moved to a less demanding outfield spot. Round 3: Tom Gettinger OF - Gettinger helps in a position where the team is quite thin. The 19 year old from Maryland is a humble kid that could play all the outfield spots, his bat is expected to come around as his hysicla skills round off. For the rest of their draft the team took George Bausewine P and Art MCcoy 2B.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Geggus Career Up In the Air ![]() The Washington Nationals are in their first pennant race in club history and have most of their city on a razors edge. The team however got the worse possible news this month when Buck Geggus suffered a serious injury and will be on the shelf for a long time. Geggus tore his UCL and will definately be out for 14 months, the question remains will be be able to recover and ever take the mound again. Geggus has created a cult legend around himself for his six years of domminance in the league. The two time pitcher of the year has a lifetime ERA of 1.45 and has struck out 1348 men. Many wonder is his akward delivery attributed to his injury and played such a strong factor in his success. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1888 Derby Provides Lasting Memory In Down Year ![]() George Derby has never been the most overpowering pitcher in the game nor does he show much flash or intimidation on the mound. But no one is more focused, smart, or profesional when they take the hill then Derby, who had a rare shining moment at West Side Park on July 20th against the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Derby threw the 6th no hitter in league history and the first in Chicago franchise history. Derby faced only 31 men on the day as he walked one and struck out four in a 4-0 shutout. It was a classic Derby performance as no one really noticed anything special until late in the game when suddenly it became apparent that Pittsburgh hadnt gotten a hit. Even after the final out Derby showed nothing but class just tipping his cap and walking off after a standing ovation from the over 3000 fans on hand. "Its quite an ackomplishment yes", said the 31 year old right hander, "I did feel good but to be honest I have had days where I have felt better, today the ball just bounced my way" With his efforts Derby was also named NL pither of the month, the fourth time Derby has won the award. The no hitter was a single bright spot in a season that is now sure lost. Chicago did string together a winning month but are still way out of it in the race as St. Louis looks for its first pennant in years atop the division. The owner of the team is said to be quite unhappy with the team this season, and rumors of a possible sale of the storied club has also been circulated around Halsted Street this month. "Who would sell such a successful franchise like the White Stockings?" said one fan, we will wait and see. --------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1888 American Association Pennant Up For Grabs Some worried that the change to the schedule and the elongation of the baseball season would create indiffrence and a lack of drama at the end of a season. But on the contrary as the marathon 154 game season comes to a close, the American Association couldnt be anymore close and dramatic. The defending World Champion Boston Americans are back to do it again and have played the mosr consistent baseball posting the best record in the league going into September. Right on their tales is a fresh new face and city as the Lousville Colonels have come out of years of frustration to currently sit one single game behind the leaders. The Amercians are led again by ace Bob Black who was injured for a good portion of the current season but is back for the stretch run and is pitching lights out once again with a 1.65 ERA. Black tore a muscle in the offseason but worked hard to regain his form. Mike GriffinAt the plate the current loss of Mike Griffin the star center fielder to a back problem has the team concerned. There remain questions if Griffin will play at all this year and now new faces need to step it up. Thus far noone has really taken on this role and pressure has mounted on bats such as Arlie Latham (.263) and George Pinkney (.263) With the Americans solely built on pitching, the Colonels look more of the same but have some pop in their lineup. Jerry Denny has smashed 17 homeruns this season and sits in the middle of the order. Tommy Tucker has stolen 58 bases thus far this season and is among the best lead off men in the league. Not to be outdone is on the mound is Matt Kiltoy who has won 31 games and has a shot at the all time record of 36 wins. Killroy has also fanned 160 men and is a rising star at the age of 23. The teams will face off for one four game series in Lousville at the start of the month. The Colonels of course won plenty when they were the St. Louis Browns, but have never won in their current home. Speaking for the Browns, the new St. Louis team is sitting more comfortable in the national league. The Browns have a 5 game lead over the Philadelphia Quakers, the two teams finish the season against eachother on the final week end of the regular season. --------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Records sure to fall With the season now close to 20 games longer then what we have seen in the past, obviously a number of season records will fall this season. Some of the notables are:
We will update you on these at the end of the season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tim Keefe In A Class Of His Own ![]() The great Brooklyn hurler set new standards of excellence this past month. While pitching his entire career in Brooklyn, Keefe struck out his 2000 man this month to increase his lead as the all time leader in the department. Keefe has already won his 200th game this past season and remains one of the nicest and well mannered players in the league today. Keefe is only 31 year old and the sky is the limit to what he can do. Most important in most peoples eyes is also the fact that Keefe has already won three championships with his team. Players stats over the years:

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1888 Old Deacon Brings In Pennant ![]() The end of the 1888 season will be remembered for two thrilling pennant races and the fact that they ended with the underdog side as victors. The Louisville Colonels turned around the race in the American Association in the last month of the season to overtake the defending champion Boston Americans. An even bigger story develeloped in the National league where the Philadelphia Quakers won their first trip to the World Series. Deacon White is playing in his 18th major league season and knows something about winning. White isnt the player he once was but his days as part of the strong Boston Red Stockings team in the early 70's havent completely left him. White build a legend and won three championships with teamates such as Ross Barnes and Cy Bentley. White barnstrormed around the league at such places as Brooklyn and accross town with the Athletics. White then hooked on with the Quakers for this season and still had a dream to be a winner even at the advanced age of 40 years old. White of course is one of the best batters in history with a career .321 average and 2 MVP awards as well as a batting title. White of course is not the same player he once was as the body aches and his days catching behind the plate become more difficult. Still White has proved to be an inspiration to the young team and in a sense a second manager that was vital in this pennant race. The Quakers were five games back going into September but the team would go on an 18-3 run to start the month and although the St. Louis Browns wernt bad, it was almost impossible to keep pace. Deacon hit .296 for the month and drove in 15 runs but his effort in two games at the start of the month set the tone for the team. White went 5-5 with 4 runs in a game against the Reds and the very next day went 3-5 with 4 RBI in a win over the Bridegrooms. White still has his moments of brilliance that is seems a legend at the end of his career seems to find when he needs it the most. The Quakers took 2 out of 3 from the Browns to end the season and take their first pennant. Now the city stands on edge as the Quakers try and bring the first championship to Philadelphia since the Athletics won way back in 1872. --------------------------------------------------------------
ANSON GETS HIT 2000! ![]() Once again proving that the older players in the league are not quite ready to call it quits, Cap Anson had another fine season for the Chicago White Stockings. Cap will be a real candidate for his second MVP award later this month as he led the league with 120 RBI and tied the record for hits in a season with 210. Anson also had career high in home runs with 13 and ended the season batting .320. Speaking of hits Cap set a standard that has not been matched by anyone who has played this game. Anson in late September cracked his 2000th hit and ended the season with 2010 career hits, more then 150 hits more then his closest chaser, Ross Barnes of the Beaneaters. How much longer can he do it? Dont ask Cap that question, "I feel like im 21 again" said the 36 year old third baseman. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- BROUTHERS TAKES ANOTHER BATTING TITLE ![]() Dan Brouthers wastn overly content with his team's play in the 1888 season as the brooklyn Bridegrooms finished well out of the race. The star first baseman however walked away with his third batting title having finished the season with a .340 average. Brouthers also drove in 80 runs and had 32 doubles, he is now only 23 doubles away from the all time lead in this catagory. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 08-29-2010 at 12:55 AM. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY October 1888 Quakers Are Worthy Champions Of Baseball Philadelphia won the very first World Series back in 1871 but and this time have done it again but it is a team with a diffrent name that has brought joy to the city. The Quakers are the best in all of baseball after easily defeating the Louisville Colonials four games to one. Deacon White of course was at the forefront of the championship and the player's legend continues to grow as White led the team in RBI for the series with 5 and drove in the winning walk off run in the closest game of the series. Here is a recap of the 18th World Series: Game 1
A close opening game sees the Quakers coe out with 5 runs in the very first inning and holding on for dear life in the bottom of the ninth. With the tying run on third and the winning run on second, Cannonball Titcomb faced George Tebeau. Cannonball got Tebeau swinging to end the game as Philly overcame 8 errors on the afternoon. Game 2
The Colonels waste no time getting even. Ollie Beard drives in three runs and George Tebeau scores three as the Colonels blow open a tie game with 8 unanswered runs. Scott Stratton pitches well and as he strikes out six and delights the home fans to even the series. Game 3
A close game is broken open by the Quakers in the bottom of the eigth inning. Tom Kears drives in a run and Ecky Stearns gets a two RBI double as the Quakers escape in the ninth for the home win. Philly has also been fortunate to overcome their inconsistent defense as they win despite six errors again. Game 4
The critical and best game of the series that was worthy of a champion. Both starters in this game were heroic as both went the distance into the 14th inning. Will Sawyer for the Quakers threw 185 pitches and allowed only one earned run. Scott Stratton for the Colonels threw 205 pithches but in the 14th he was charged with the loss. Bill White tripled with two out and up came Deacon White, instead of walking him Stratton decided to throw to him. The 40 year old legend lofted a hit to right field and the series turned completely to the Quakers. Game 5

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1889 "Winning is Our Only Commitment" The Chicago White Stockings have won more games then any team in baseball histoty. That being a proud fact, the team "only" has two world championships to show for all those wins. The past offseason was especially active as anytinme this franchise finishes 18 games out of the race deep changes are sure to follow.
The team owner seemed like he was all over town this offseason, "We have a single goal and that is to win championships" said Chicago native Elliott Mauri, "Our ambition is to be the best baseball franchise in America and we will do everything we can to acomplish this." True to his word the team made three significant changes this offseason. The first being the stepping down of player/manager Cap Anson from his managerial duties. Anson led the team to two world championships but now can soley concentrate on his play and his health as his 37th birthday looms. To replace Anson the Whites have turned to 54 year old former player Harry Wright. Wright is a no nonsense manager who brings a strong character to the club. Cap AnsonAnson was quite understanding when addressing the change, "It was maybe too much to play and manage a team like this." said Pops, "I need to focus on my play fulltime and accept the decision. This of course doesnt mean that I wont manage again someday" The other significant coaching move came soon after. The Whites have brought in a new young bench coach to help Wright. Charlie "commy" Comiskey at only 30 years old brings a world of enthusism and promise to the position. Comiskey played eight seasons with the Washington ball club but wasnt the best player in the league having a career .201 average. Once the offer to return to Chicago as a coach came, the young man decided to change his career. Comiskey is a Chicago native and his love for the game and especially this city have imopressed many, Comiskey brings an ambition that fits in perfectly with the club. All ready he has been the voice of the teaming heading into the new year. Bob BlackFinally the Chicago club made its biggest splash with its addition on the field. The Whites have signed none other the star pitcher Bob Black. Black comes from Boston to Chicago as what many scouts consider the best arm in the game. At only 26 years of age Black has won two pitcher of the year awards and has he lowest career ERA in history at 1.28. Black has already won 128 games in his career including a record 38 in his rookie season. "There is no place I would rather be then Chicago" said Black upon his arrival. Black is joined by the return of former White Ned Williamson who returns to the team that drafted him. The Whites bid farewell to Frank Fennelly, Art Hagen, and Cupid Childs to make room on their roster and payroll. The excitement in the air for this upcoming season is eclectric. The team finally feels it has the best team in the league again, and with new leadership Chicago just may be champions again after a five year drought. -------------------------------------------------------------- More Free Agent Splashes The defending champion Philadelphia Quakers will find their road to a repeat a little more tough. The Quakers lost their inspirational leader Deacon White when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds this offseason. White says he has plenty of games left in his tank and at 41 years old the third baseman is looking to bring a title to his new team. Ross BarnesRoss Barnes has been playing in Boston since the inagural season of 1871. The time has come however for the city's most popular player to move on. Barnes left his team after the Beaneaters continue to lose money and struggle on the field. Barnes will continue his career in Washington where news of his arrival made it all the way to the White House. Boston fans had tears in their eyes as they see one of the game best ever players now look to end his career somewhere else. Finally the baseball team in Detroit has a new name and a new star. The former Wolverines are now known as the Tigers and Buck Ewing is the new face of the franchise. The chase for Ewing and his services was hot around the league but in the end Detroit claimed the catcher who is hoping to build a winner in desperate Detroit. Ewing is a one time MVP and has driven in almost 500 runs for his career. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 09-07-2010 at 07:51 PM. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1889 Kelly and Hamilton Hurt To Derail Start ![]() ![]() The Chicago White Stockings got off to a more turbulent start then they had hoped for going into the 1889 season. The team finished the month of April under new manager Harry Wright 13-12, three games behind first place Brooklyn.
The team did get a good start from big name freeagent Bob Black who struck out 56 men and got off to a 7-2 start. Black has gotten better with each start and although his ERA of 2.05 is higher then his career average, the team is still happy with this contribution thus far. Injuries always play a role for the fortunes of a team. This month King Kelly missed two weeks with an abdominal strain and has only recently returned to form and to the lineup. Concers about Kelly's ability to stay healthy remain, and some say that his off the field behavior and time spent at the pub have something to do with this. No one questions young Billy Hamilton's work ethic, but the young outfielder injured his knee and missed most of April as well. Hamilton while on the field looks as strong as ever battng .488 in the ten games he has played. Hamilton is truly becoming a star at many levels. Another major concern is that of starter Adonis Terry. Terry has strugged thus far on the mound and the team is wondering if he can hold down for the season. Terry who has fought a number of nagging injuries in his career went 4-2 for the month but had a high 4.14 ERA, numbers that dont induce confidence in his team. Mickey Welch was picked up off waivers this month. The former star pitcher is with the club after major arm surgery, not ions of him as a starter may have passed but the team is hoping they can get something from the righthanders, the role of closer has also been tossed around. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Standings
----------------------------------------------------------------------- League News McTamany Career Over Jim McTamany wont be playing baseball again as the 25 year old centerfielder for the Detroit Tigers suffered a scary career ending injury. McTamany tore his labrum and with no modern fix for the injury his inability to hold a bat or wear a glove make it impossible for him to play. Jimmy was a star in the game having scored 310 runs and stolen 148 bases in only 400 games. He was also off to the best start of his career this year batting .333 before he was injured. Ewing hits in 25 straight Twenty nine year old Buck Ewing is out to prove that he is worth all the money that he signed for this offseason. Ewing penned a big contract with the Detroit Tigers and the expectations for a strong season were set. The pressure for Ewing to produce went even higher when teamate Jim McTamany went down with a major injury. Ewing has responded and took the Tiger fans on a thrill ride by hitting safely in 25 straight games. Ewing did have his streak stopped but he is batting .337 for the season and has already become a fan favorite. Buck also has been a leader behind the plate and has aided the Tiger pitchers like Alex Voss. Detroit is 13-11 on the season only two games out of first place. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1889 Heartwrenching Month for Whites After all of the anticipation going into the 1889 season the Chicago White Stockings had a poor month of May going 12-16 and falling 4.5 games out of the first place race. The month was and its record were even more hard to swallow as the team lost numerous games in the late innings and in fact are only 7-12 in one run games and 1-4 in exrta innings games. ![]() The worst of it came on May 25th in Brooklyn. The Whites were rolling along with a 10-3 lead in the eigth inning when the Bridegrooms scored two in the eigth to cut the lead to five. In the bottom of the ninth Pete Conway lost his control and walked 5 men in the inning and a total of 12 for the game. Brooklyn scored 6 runs in the inning and walked off with an improbable win. The Whites lost numerous games in the bottom of the ninth with leads in hand; nerves and anxiousness are obvious on the mound. George Derby who has been so reliable for so many years seems to be slowing down now. Derby had to be removed from the rotation and now ha spot bullpen duty, the 31 year old is 1-4 this year with a 6.75 ERA. He seems to have lost much of his velocity on his pitches. With the team struggling there is good news as center fielder Billy Hamilton is having an incredible year. Hamilton is leading the league in hitting with a .423 average. Bobby has scored 39 runs already and stolen 18 bases. The 23 year old is on a tear and is the main reason why the West Side Grounds is filled to capacity every home game. Fans were also divided about news this month that Cap Anson has signed with the team for another three seasons. Cap is 36 years of age and many wonder if the team is being extra loyal to Cap rather then treating him like anyother player. Still Cap is beloved throughout the city and he is still producing, hitting .316 in his first two months. Cap has also remained very dependable and has avoided injury for most of his career. The deal is estimated at over $3,000 per season. -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1889 Whites Will Not Give Up After things got lower then low and one of the teams most popular players was dealt away, the Chicago White Stockings picked themselves up and seem to be in a moode to make a run at the top. Chicago fell deeper out of the race early in June as they lost 9 of eleven games including a bad sweep at the hands of the Boston Beaneaters at home. Part of the problem was the pitching and after this stretch the decision was made to part ways with George Derby, who spent his entire career in Chicago including being part of the two Chicago championship seasons. Derby won 149 games for the Whites and despite not having overwhelming stuff in his career, was a mainstay in the rotation and won numerous big games for the team. Derby however was struggling this season with an ERA over 6.00. The 31 year old starter was sent to the Philadelphia Quakers for outfielder Marty Sulliven. Sent to PhiladelphiaWith Derby out of the picture the Whites called upon Pete Conway to retuen back to the rotation. Conway was more then up to the challange and helped produce a string of quality starts. Along with Conway Adonis Terry responded to being skipped in the rotation due to his early performances and the right hander got his swagger back quickly. Terry won his last four starts of the month including a brilliant three hit shutout against those same Quakers on the 25th of the month. Chicago went on a run to close out the month and they did it against some of the top teams of the division. Chicago swept the Reds and the league leading Bridegrooms from Brooklyn to win six in a row and even their record a 40-40. The Whites climb to only 5 games back in the race and have more imnportantly build a confidence again. "With our skill level and experiance alot of teams have to be afraid to play us" said right fielder George Dandy Wood, "we have to be considered in any pennant race and this season will be no diffrent. The season is about halfway through with a world of baseball still to be played.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- 1889 Amatuer Draft Full of Expectation Teams linedup again this past month for the annual amatuer draft of baseball talent around the country. Here is a recap of the top seven picks including that of Chicago: ![]() 1. Kid Nichols SP - Philadelphia Athletics Few pitchers have been as highly touted as this "kid". Nichols is only 19 but has movement on his pitches that few have seen before. Nichols wowed scouts in his showing in Chicago and expectations in Philadelphia are already as high as they have been in years. 2. George Meakim SP - Chicago White Sox Surely the Sox arnt happy with just missing out on Nichols but they believe they have a good man themselves. Meakim is a college man from New York that has alot to offer. 3. Billy "Bunker" Rhines SP - Pittsburgh Alleghenys Almost as popular for his personality then for his pitching, Rhines hopes to revive the Pittsburgh organization that hasnt won sicne their inception. This is a kid that could handle the pressure. 4. Bill Joyce 3B - Boston Beaneaters Joyce was expected to go higher and Boston will be very happy to get him. Scrappy has good power and maturity for his age, and Boston has been looking for a young star for years. 5. Cy Young SP - Cincinnati Red Stockings Questions about this farm kid from Ohio have grown as not everyone has seen him pitch yet. Others say that Young throws harder then any man in the league. The Red Stockings took a chance here and hope it is gold, although they havent signed him yet. 6. Frank Knauss SP - Washington Nationals With Charlie Geggus's career maybe over, the Nationals look for another arm to lead their rotation. There are questions by many if Knauss can be that good or the man for the job. 7. Jocko Halligan RF - Chicago White Stockings A safe pick here by Chicago as Halligan is sure to develop into a good or even great talent. Still some feel that Chicago desperately needed help on the mound. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1889 Life On The Farm IS Good ![]() Never in the history of the game of baseball has a player rejected the opportunity to play pro ball and earn a living after being drafted in the first round. This past month however the first round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds has yet to report to his team and is heading down this path. Cy Young, the fifth pick in the amatuer draft is not living the dream of a big leager with his new team. In fact Young remains on his farm in Iowa and has been silent to numerous letters and requests by his team to try and get him to put on a uniform. Word is that Red's officials have become frustrated with Young and are even considering giving up on him completely. The Reds in fact sent a team representative to the farm in town of Gilmore to meet with Young but came back with more questions then answers. Young reportedly isnt convinced on the notion of playing baseball and is said to "like the life he has as a farmer and cant just get up and leave all of his responsibilities." The Reds of course are trying to up their price upon signing the 22 year old but it appears that he may have changed his mind about the sport. The Reds in the mean time are leading the National League and have a real chance to win their first pennant since 1883. The Reds hold a only a 1.5 game lead over Brooklyn. Chicago for their part carried their winning streak all the way to eleven games in a row. Still they had an up and down month overall going 16-11 for the month and falling to 6.5 games out of first place. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1889 Brooklyn Remains In Fight; Waits On Brouthers ![]() Two teams have emerged in the National League contenders for this season's pennant and the race is all even going into the final month of the season. The Brooklyn Bridegrooms have of course been here before winning championships in 1885 and 1886 and not having a losing season in 9 years. Brooklyn have built a culture of good baseball and the undeniable leaders through the years have been Dan Brouthers and Tim Keefe. What can one say about this duo that hasnt been said already? Keefe has won 25 games this season and Brouthers is batting .382, once again leading the lead as Brouthers goes for his 7th MVP award this season. Tim KeefeAnothe big star to emerge for the Bridegrooms has been the Dutchman George Van Haltren who hasnt won a title yet and is showing his hunger with his .335 average. The Cincinnati Reds on the other hand have come out of nowhere The Reds finished 20 games out of first place a year ago but are a completely new team now. The Reds have done it with their pitching leading the league in ERA at 2.43. Three players have won over 20 games with Harry McCormick leading the way with 25, Ed Dugan and Ehret have 23 wins a piece. George Glasscock is the star at the plate having driven in 80 runs so far this year. Dave Orr is batting over .370 and Tom Brown provides the power with 14 long balls this season. The excitement and fever in Cincy over this pennant race has brought the city to its knees in suspense. The biggest news in this race came this month when Dan Brouthers suffered a hip injury and missed two weeks. Brouthers is due to miss another week into September leaving the Bridegrooms weakened at the most crucial time. Big Dan is due back before the end of the year, and in the two weeks he has been out in August the Bridegrooms havent lost any ground. Dan BrouthersThe two teams do not meet in September until the last three games of the season when they meet three times on the final weekend. The games will be in Washington Park in Brooklyn and will surely decide the pennant winner. In local news the Chicago White Stockings won ten in a row in August but are still a distant 6.5 games back in what remains a disapointing season ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1889 The Most Anticipated Series The pennant races were as good as ever to close out the 1889 season and now in the end the two best teams in baseball in almost everyone's eyes face off for the championship. The Boston Americans have become not only the most popular team in the game but also one of the most well run and skilled. It was these Americans who chased down the Lousville Colonels and outwrestled the American Association pennant from them. The Boston side won 7 of their last 8 games and secured the title on the last day of the season by beating Baltimore 8-1 while Louisville struggled. The Colonels went 8-12 in September and on the final Sunday of the season lost to the Cleveland Spiders by allowing two runs in the ninth to lose their lead. The poised Amercians were led Nat Hudson who won 29 games on the mound. Sam Wise was the hero in the middle of the order hitting 19 homeruns and driving in 81 RBI, Wise is a great compliment for Mike Griffin who always seems to be on base. Boston is only 7th in the league in average, but was second in on base perfectage and first in walks taken. Boston is also an excellent road team with a record this season of 47-30. The Brooklyn Bridegrooms welcomed back Dan Brouthers at the perfect time as the superstar helped Brooklyn smother their rivals from Cincinnati in September. The Reds stumbled at bit going 8-12 in the crucial month, heading into the final weekend series of the season with the Bridegrooms the Reds needed a sweep as they trailed by 3 full games. After losing to the Reds big 16-5 in the first game, Brooklyn won the next day 5-3 and closed out another pennant, the fourth in their history. Tim Keefe ended up winning 30 games for the second time in his career and the Bridegrooms led the entire league in hitting with a .274 average, Brouthers of course won another batting title ending the season with a .376 average. So the scene is set for a great World Series. Brooklyn in their history has never lost a World Series winning all three they have played in. Brooklyn will also have the home field advantage in the series and have the big name stars. Boston however has been champions in the recent past and are playing some of their best baseball. Interest in this series accross the country is as high as anyone could remember as two bi cities with huge stars battle for the championship of baseball. Boston Lineup
