Young Lefty Elmer Smith Shuts Down St. Louis
Cincinnati, OH - As the crowd at Bank Street Grounds watched 19-year old Elmer Smith induce Browns batter Jack O'Brien to ground out to second, they immediately knew had witnessed a little bit of history. In fact, Smith became the youngest pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter as he stuck out 6 and walked 2 for his 36th win of the season. Smith walked one man in the 1st and 9th inning for the only blemishes against him. As for the playoff race, it is far too late for all the other American Association teams, including Cincinnati, as they all trail the regular season champions Baltimore Orioles.

Cap Anson Traded to Cincinnati After Drunken Tirade
Boston, MA - As fans opened up their newspaper on March 6, 1888, most of them were probably shocked to find out that longtime Boston Beaneater Cap "Pop" Anson was traded away to the Cincinnati Red Stockings under bizarre circumstances. Anson was hanging out at a local tavern with teammates King Kelly and George Hall when he become very drunk and started shouting racial slurs towards patrons at the tavern. After his teammates thought they had calmed him down, he threatened to burn down the South End Grounds, where the club plays their games. After his attempt to commit arson was thwarted, the police were called in to put the cuffs on Mr. Anson and shortly after that he was shipped off to Cincinnati.
This news comes after a season that saw offensive force Ross Barnes go down for the season with an injury. Currently, he is unsigned as he is still recovering from that horrific injury. As for the trade, if you are a Red Stockings fan, you have be thrilled as your club gets a juggernaut hitter in the 35-year old Anson and all you had to give up was 29-year old CF Dennis Casey who is an average outfielder at best. Below are Anson's career stats:

1888 End of June: National League & American Association
![]() After finishing 30+ games out of 1st place the previous 2 years, the Washington Nationals are dominating the rest of the league through their pitching staff. George Bradley (17) and Bill Wise (12) are responsible for most of the wins. With every other team playing .500 ball besides the Quakers, it is the Nationals pennant to lose. Meanwhile, Ross Barnes is making an impressive comeback from injury as he is batting .326 (31-95) in 29 games. While it doesn't show up in their record, the New York Giants have been led by an offensive monster in their lineup. "Silent Mike" Tiernan is on pace for astronomical numbers and is leading all 3 triple crown categories (AVG, HR, RBI). If Tiernan keeps up the pace, he would become the first triple crown winner in ML history. Batting Leaders BA: Mike Tiernan (NYG) .382 Hits: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 83 2B: Deacon McGuire (WHS) 16 3B: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 19 HR: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 5 RBI: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 47 Runs: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 50 SB: Tom Daly (CHN) 42 Pitching Leaders ERA: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 1.92 Wins: George Bradley (WHS) 17 Losses: Larry McKeon (DTN) 14 SHO: Bob Black (IND), Milo Lockwood (PIT), Bill Wise (WHS) 2 K's: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 106 Injuries NONE Various News & Notes 6/6: Washington P Bill Wise strikes out a ML record 16 batters in a 5-4 victory over Detroit. Although, it took him 16 innings to do so. 6/13: New York RF Mike Tiernan had 5 hits in 7 at-bats against Detroit. The Giants also prevailed 10-9 in 13 innings on Tiernan's walk-off homer. 6/15: New York trades 32-year old 3B Charlie Householder to Brooklyn for 25-year old C Bob Clark. 6/19: Louisville trades 34-year old 1B Jake Goodman to Kansas City for 37-year old C Ezra Sutton. 6/22: Pittsburg trades 28-year old SS Bill White and 21-year old C Tom Terrell to Baltimore for 25-year old RF Billy Sunday and 19-year old P Shorty Wetzel. 6/23: Boston trades 26-year old 3B Jumbo Davis to Cleveland for 26-year old RF Bill Kienzle and 24-year old C Bill Collins. ![]() The American Assocation has been represented by the Baltimore Orioles in 5 of the 6 World Series so far. And this year looks to be no different as they already have a 10.5 game lead at the end of June. They are lead by the pitching duo of Bob Emslie (19-6, 2.09) and John Coleman (10-5, 2.11). On the basepaths, they are burning trails from base to base every single game. They lead the league with 172 steals with Mike Griffin (61) and Tommy Tucker (44) leading the way. Sutton, one of the original National Association players is struggling with a .215 average this season. 6/22: Baltimore trades 25-year old RF Billy Sunday and 19-year old P Shorty Wetzel to Pittsburg for 28-year old SS Bill White and 21-year old C Tom Terrell. 6/23: Cleveland trades 26-year old RF Bill Kienzle and 24-year old C Bill Collins to Boston for 26-year old 3B Jumbo Davis.

Been enjoying the thread, and was wondering if I could ask how are you doing the scheduling? I have the real schedules from 1871-1875, but the source of these isn't doing anymore at this time and I was wondering what are you using and if they are the real schedules, is there any chance of getting a copy of them?
Thanks and once again good work thus far, dcc

1888 End of September: National League & American Association
![]() The club from Washington has seen their once 10.5 game lead shrink down to 2.5 games with 2 weeks to play in the season. Now to New York and Mike Tiernan's once promising triple crown feat. Well, that looks all but dead now because his teammate Dave Orr seems to be driving in all the runs on the team. As for the pennant race, the schedule seems to favor the Nationals very much as they play out their remaining game all at home while the Alleghenys play out the rest of their season on the road including a 3 game trip to Washington from Oct 3-5. Washington (11 games) IND (2) PIT (3) CHN (3) DTN (3) Pittsburg (11 games) @ PHI (2) @ WHS (3) @ NYG (3) @ BSN (3) Batting Leaders BA: Mike Tiernan (NYG) .354 Hits: Jake Beckley (PIT) 174 2B: Dave Orr (NYG) 38 3B: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 28 HR: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 10 RBI: Dave Orr (NYG) 101 Runs: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 123 SB: Mike Tiernan (NYG) 103 Pitching Leaders ERA: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 2.08 Wins: George Bradley (WHS) 33 Losses: Larry McKeon (DTN) 31 SHO: Bob Black (IND), Daisy Davis (CHN) 5 K's: Milo Lockwood (PIT) 229 Injuries BSN- CF Harry Lyons (torn back muscle, 2 weeks) CHN- C Fred Carroll (torn PCL, 4 weeks) CHN- RF Hugh Duffy (damaged knee meniscus, 4 days) PHI- 3B Jerry Denny (scratched cornea, 7 weeks) Various News & Notes 9/4: New York P Harry Salisbury made history today at the Polo Grounds as he picked up his 300th win of his career. The 33-year old had his best season with Cleveland in 1884 when he went 45-11 in 57 games and posted a all-time low ERA of 1.16. He also won the Cartwright Award that year, given to the best pitcher. 9/10: Less than a week after picking up a milestone victory, New York P Harry Salisbury had a career game with his bat. That's right, Salisbury went 5-6 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in a 16-5 victory over Indianapolis. He also picked up the win. 9/11: Pittsburg C Jack Rowe goes hitless ending his streak at 20 games. 9/19: New York RF Mike Dorgan has 5 hits in 6 trips to the plate in a 7-5 victory over Pittsburg in 12 innings. ![]() From start to finish will the be story for the Baltimore Orioles as they have destroyed their opponents all year long behind timely hitting and superb pitching. This will be the Orioles 5th pennant in 5 years and 6th total in the 7 year history of the league. Even with all those pennants, they have only won it all once, in 1885 when they triumphed over the Chicago White Stockings of the NL. It may be tough for them to win it all this year as late in the year they lost one of their best offensive threats in Harry Moore to an apparent eye injury. Harkins was acquired August 27 from Chicago where he owned a 3-7 record in 24 games. Since being acquired by the Orioles, he has gone 10-0 in 10 starts! 9/10: Baltimore LF Harry Moore goes 5-5 in a 17-6 win over Philadelphia. 9/26: Kansas City LF Darby O'Brien goes 5-5 with 3 RBI in an 11-3 triumph over Brooklyn. 9/29: Having already clinched the AA pennant, Baltimore LF Harry Moore is lost for the season after suffering a scratched cornea while making a defensive play in a game against Cincinnati.

![]() The Washington Nationals came oh so close to blowing the NL pennant lead they once had at 10.5 games. They lost 2 of 3 to Pittsburg in their crucial series and their pitching staff faltered in the final games, but they did just enough to win the pennant.

1888 World Series Recap
1888 WORLD SERIES: Washington Nationals (NL) vs. Baltimore Orioles (AA) Petit's 4th inning blast is all Nationals need to steal Game 1 Game 1: John Harkins, a late season acquisition, got the opening game nod for the Baltimore Orioles. In his 13 games since the trade, all he had done was compile a 13-0 record. In the 1st, he got the Nationals to go 1-2-3 ending the inning. Surprisingly, the Nationals elected to go with Charlie Hilsey on the mound, who came in off a 13-20 record in the regular season. And as they had done all year long, the Orioles strike in the bottom of the 1st as Chippy McGarr leads off with a single, steals 2nd, and advances to 3rd on a throwing error. He scores when Tom Brown grounds out. With 1 out in the bottom of the 3rd, Hilsey gets careless and walks his counterpart Harkkins. After a McGarr groundout advances Harkins to 2nd base, Tom Brown delivers his 2nd RBI with ringing single back up the middle for a 2-0 Baltimore lead through 3 innings. After making 2 quick outs in the 4th, Washington 2B Billy Nash hustles out an infield single. Next up, Mox McQuery gets on base via an Oyster Burns error to put men on 2nd and 3rd. Bob Petit would make sure the Orioles paid for their mistake as he belted a 386 foot homer to right field giving the Nationals a 3-2 lead. In the top of the 6th, the Nationals manufacture a run as Dummy Hoy draws a leadoff walk, goes to 2nd on a Nash sacrifice, steals 3rd base, and comes home on a McQuery sac fly to put them up 4-2. Baltimore is given hope in the bottom of the 8th after back-to-back Washington errors with 2 outs, but Tom Brown hits a harmless groundout to Nash ending the threat. In the bottom of the 9th, Mike Griffin gets on base with an infield single, but Hilsey gets the next 2 Oriole batters to ground out giving Washington the 4-2 series opening win! Baltimore strikes early to get lead, Emslie preserves it Game 2: The 2nd game of the series showcases both teams' best pitcher during the regular season. For Washington it is George "Grin" Bradley, who went 36-17 in 60 games. Going for Baltimore, it will be Bob Emslie who is coming off a 49-16 record and is pitching in his 5th straight World Series! The Orioles get off to a fast start as they open the bottom of the 1st with 2 straight singles, but only manage 1 run on a Tommy Tucker sac fly. Washington's Mox McQuery gets on base to start the 2nd inning via a Baltimore error. Emslie retires the next 2 batters before walking 3B Pete Sweeney. Next up is pitcher George Bradley and he worked the count full before delivering a devastating 2-run double to put the Nationals in front 2-1 at the end of the inning. But, Baltimore answers quickly as Chief Zimmer and Joe Visner reach base and come home on Chippy McGarr's 2-run single to left giving Baltimore the lead at 3-2 after 2 innings. Both pitchers finally settle down as the next 3 innnings are scoreless. Then, in the bottom of the 6th, Baltimore breaks through again as Oyster Burns singles and Jack Glasscock doubles. Chief Zimmer knocks in their 4th run on a sac fly as the O's lead 4-2 into the 7th. In the bottom of the 8th, Baltimore adds onto their lead as Chief Zimmer gets a 2 out RBI infield single giving his team a 5-2 lead into the final inning. Bob Emslie sets down the first 2 batters before allowing McQuery and Petit to single off him. The threat would end there as Emslie got Bobby Wheelock to ground out giving Baltimore the 5-2 victory and evening up the series at 1. Nationals fail to get clutch hits at home, trail in series Game 3: The series now shifts to Washington where the pitching matchup will be Charlie Hilsey against John Harkins. Once again, Baltimore strikes in the 1st innning as Tommy Tucker leads off with a single and scores when Chippy McGarr triples into the left field gap. Mike Griffin drives in the 2nd run as he lofts a fly ball down the right field line for a sac fly. Oyster Burns reaches on an error and then scores as Tom Brown reaches on another Washington error, their 3rd of the inning. After another Nationals error puts men on 1st and 3rd, Hilsey finally gets some defensive help and gets out of the inning trailing 3-0. But, the Nationals would have no part of it as they countered with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Deacon McGuire gets on 2nd base via an error and then is driven home by a Dummy Hoy double. The next batter, Billy Nash clobbers a 2 run shot over the right field fence tying the game up at 3 going into the 2nd inning. Then, in the 3rd, Baltimore puts the first 2 men on base. After another Washington error, their 6th of the game, allows Baltimore to go ahead 4-3. Jack Glasscock loads up the bases with a single to right field with NO outs. Chief Zimmer wastes no time adding onto the lead when he rips a liner to center that goes down as a sac fly. Joe Visner draws a walk, loading up the bases again. This time, John Harkins contributes to his own cause as he hits a sac fly making it 6-3 Baltimore. In the bottom of the 6th, Harkins works out a 1st and 2nd base jam as Nash is caught stealing and Petit grounds out as the Nationals trail 6-3 into the 7th. With 1 out in the bottom of the 8th, Washington's Deacon McGuire tries to get a rally started with a double. The next man up, Dummy Hoy, singles putting men on 1st and 3rd for Billy Nash. Nash manages to collect an a RBI groundout to 3rd base cutting the lead to 6-4 in favor of Baltimore. Onto the final inning, Harkins retires the first 2 batters before pinch hitter Al Myers singles to right to keep the game alive. Unfortunately for the Nationals, pinch hitter Connie Mack can't keep the rally alive as he grounds out to shortstop giving Baltimore the 6-4 win and 2-1 lead in the series! Baltimore rides small ball tactics to Game 4 win and 3-1 series lead Game 4: Many people wonder what the secret to the Oriole's success has been and it has been their ability to get 1st inning runs all year long. For the 4th time in 4 games this series, Baltimore scores in the initial inning after Mike Griffin draws a walk, then advances to 2nd on a pickoff error and scores when Oyster Burns singles back up the middle for the 1-0 lead. A leadoff single by Tommy Tucker to start the 3rd inning is rewarded by Mike Griffin when he delivers a RBI groundout to 1st base for the 2-0 lead. Washington LF Walt Wilmot leads off the 4th with a double, the Nationals' first hit of the game off Baltimore pitcher Bob Emslie. Another Baltimore run comes across after Tommy Tucker leads off the 5th inning with a single, steals 2nd, and scores on a Chippy McGarr double making it 3-0 Baltimore. With Griffin at the plate, McGarr steals 3rd and comes home on a groundout making it 4-0. The Nationals finally break through in the bottom of the 6th when Pete Sweeney reaches base on a passed ball 3rd strike. He then proceeds to steal 2nd, and comes home when George Bradley singles to center cutting the lead to 4-1. Onto the last at-bats for the Nationals as Walt Wilmot opens the inning with a single. Emslie sets down the next 2 hitters, but fails to retire Billy Nash as he keeps their hopes alive when he singles up the middle scoring Wilmot to make it 4-2. Mox McQuery couldn't keep the rally going as he pops up to third leaving the Nationals staring at a 3-1 series deficit. Nationals crawl way back into series, Hilsey limits O's potent hitting Game 5: With the series returning to Baltimore, the pitching matchup will be Baltimore's John Harkins against Washington's Charlie Hilsey for the third time. For the first time in the series, the Orioles fail to get a 1st inning run. In the top of the 3rd, Nationals' Pete Sweeney leads off with a single, advances to 3rd on a pairof groundouts, and scores when Deacon McGuire ropes a single down the right field line giving Washington a 1-0 lead. Washington plates their 2nd run of the game in the 4th inning on a pair of Baltimore miscues. First, LF Joe Visner drops a routine fly ball by Dummy Hoy allowing him on base. Then, Hoy steals 3rd base and comes home when Baltimore catcher Chief Zimmer airmails the throw. The Nationals add 2 more runs in the 5th inning as Hoy and Billy Nash deliver RBI singles making it 4-0. The Orioles finally get on the board in the bottom of the 5th when Tommy Tucker strokes a RBI double to cut the lead to 4-1. In the following inning, Washington gets their run right back as a Charlie Hilsey groundout gives the Nationals their 5th run of the game. Baltimore gets their first 2 men on base to start the 6th inning and Jack Glasscock makes it pay off as he knocks an RBI single to left field. Chief Zimmer delivers the 3rd run on a sac fly to center. In the bottom of the 9th trailing 5-3, Glasscock leads it off with a single. The next man up is Chief Zimmer, who kills the Orioles' hope as he grounds into the 5-4-3 double play. With 2 outs though and Joe Visner their last hope, he comes through and triples off the right field wall. Next up is pinch hitter Ed Whiting, who cracks a line shot down the right field line, but defensive replacement George Shoch spears the balls ending the game and giving Washington the 5-3 win and now trail 3-2 in the series. Emslie throws a 3 hit masterpiece, Orioles take control of the series Game 6: In the bottom of the 2nd, the Orioles strike first against Washington pitcher George Bradley. Oyster Burns leads off with a single and Tom Brown drills an RBI triple to deep right. Jack Glasscock delivers a sac fly to left making it 2-0 Orioles. Baltimore hurler Bob Emslie is cruising through the Washington lineup as he has only allowed 3 hits through 6 innings, 2 of them from George Bradley. In the bottom of the 6th, Baltimore gets a 1 out rally started as Mike Griffin doubles, Oyster Burns walks, and then the Orioles execute a beautiful double steal to put men on 2nd and 3rd. Tom Brown makes it 3-0 with a sac fly. In the bottom of the 8th, the Baltimore bats awake again when Chippy McGarr singles and is driven home by a Mike Griffin triple making it 4-0. Baltimore tacks on 2 more runs in the inning on a Tom Brown groundout and a Joe Visner single making it 6-0 heading into the 9th. Once again, the Nationals go down quickly as Bob Emslie gives the Orioles a 4-2 series lead. Orioles demolish Nationals in series clinching win! Game 7: In what could be the final game of the series, Baltimre jumps all over Washington starter Charlie Hilsey in the 1st inning. The Orioles push across 3 runs as Oyster Burns singles home a run and Jack Glasscock knocks in 2 more runs with a single. Without getting a hit in the bottom of the 2nd, the Nationals manage to put a run on the board. Dummy Hoy draws a walk, steals 2nd, advances to 3rd on a throwing error, and comes home when Mox McQuery ground out to 2nd base. After Tom Brown reaches on an error to lead off the 4th inning, Hilsey retires the next two batters. Then, everything comes unraveled as 4 straight singles lead to 3 more Orioles' runs and they now lead 6-1 into the bottom of the 4th. After the first 2 Orioles reach base to start the 5th, Hilsey is relieved by Pete Conway, who only allows 1 run to score making it 7-1 Baltimore. More Washington miscues lead more Baltimore runs in the 6th inning. This time, Chippy McGarr scores on a groundout after reaching via an error. Then, Mike Griffin touches home after Conway unleashes a wild pitch making it 9-1 Baltimore. The Orioles get their 10th run in the 7th inning on another Washington error. In the 8th, a Mike Griffin leadoff triple is brought home by an Oyster Burns groundout making it 11-1 Orioles! The Nationals get back a little bit of dignity when Wal Wilmot drives in Pete Conway for their 2nd run of the game. Going to the finaly inning, the Nationals are going to need a miracle to happen. Billy Nash leads off with a single but is quickly erased when Mox McQuery grounds into a 4-6-3 twin killing. The Orioles are 1 out away from all the glory! The last hope for the Nats is Bob Petit. John Harkins delivers, ball 1, outside. Next pitch, Petit waves right through the pitch. The 1-1 pitch from Harkins, ball 2. As Harkins wipes the sweat from his brow, Petit steps back into the box. The delivery and Petit swings, POPUP, middle of the infield, Glasscock ranging over, calling for it and HE HAS IT!!!! THE BALTIMORE ORIOLES HAVE WON THE 1888 WORLD SERIES!!!
