I know that the game will support non-US characters, such as standard French/Spanish accents and such. But I don't think it's going to be supporting Japanese or anything like that.

MD, what do you mean by "really odd"?

I have a Quebec name file. It's on my old computer but I could get it if needed.

Last names from the latest census, and first name from a Quebec gouvernment list stating the most popular names given to kids born in 2002 or something like that. Pretty sure I had more than the 100 you have.

I remember there was a problem with French names that ends with an accent (like Éric Gagné). OOTP just imports Gagn. (Edit: Just saw from the post just above that it should be corrected)

I've covered every element you mentioned, but maybe I missed a few accents - if you want, I'm sure battists can send it to you and you can double-check the accents I added (or missed). I also found a name file from most common names, and not baby names (more Michel, Jean and Daniel, less Matthis and the like).

Like long_long_name said, we already have French Canadian data. But, if you're interested in seeing/checking it, just PM me!

Since absolutely none of the feedback to date on the Beta of the name file replacement set for OOTP (the download link is in my .sig below) has been negative in any way, if no problem has reared its ugly head by Monday I will then be releasing the name file set for general distribution.

Well, you can have a John Hayakawa. Leroy Kamarovsky and Stanislav Jones aren't out of the question either. Mark Kamarovsky and Ted Stanislav also are realistic. Interracial marraiage, legal name changes, etc. allow these things. I know many with American first names, foreign last names; foreign first names, American last names. It at least needs to occasionally happen.

There are very few American last names, aren't there?

99Ballons - Great list! Thanks for posting it.

I created African-American names files last summer for use with the OOTP Originator, but your list (obviously the result of the fine source you used) is much more convincing.

Good news for you, the way that Markus has the OOTP6 name generation programed this does actually happen sometimes. I've done a lot of name file testing and sometimes you do get a player with a first name from one name set and a last name from another.

This is the thread of names I want to see in OOTP'06?

Ok. Cool.

How about...

Waldrop Finch?

Cedric Norway?

Wayman Deeds?

And the always-popular Tut Jennings?

Shall I go on?

Noticeably "ethnic" African American names are not currently included in the U.S. names file because there's no way to prevent the occurrence or frequency of awkward combinations like "LaShawn Geisel" or some such.

Apart from creating a separate file for ethnic African American names, there's not really any way to handle this right now. You could include the ethnic African American names, and edit out the weird combinations, or you can NOT include them, and edit them in. Of course, the current U.S. names file should generate many names that would be suitable for African American players (like "Ryan Howard" or "Barry Bonds," for example). You just won't see names like "Asante," I don't think.

What's wrong with LaShawn Geisel?

Anyway, I don't see what the big problem is with having them together. But I guess you could segregate them, that would work. I wonder if Mal would volunteer for that and hold his ridiculous testing process for them.

IMHO, I don't think there's anything wrong with LaShawn Geisel per se. The difficulty is in controlling the frequency with which this sort of combination occurs. If you end up with one LaShawn Geisel, it would be an interesting anomaly, a la Milton Bradley or whatever.

But, if your annual amateur draft is peppered with as many "Asante Steinberg"s and "Deshaun Tortellini"s as it is John Smiths, one might feel that the name set isn't representative of the real world. Anyway, it's just one thought process. As with previous versions of OOTP, the name set will be customizable, and I believe in a more flexible fashion than previous versions.

Out of curiosity... how the hell did you manage to come up with a unified African file, given the dozens and hundreds of nationalities present?
