Question Draft

What is the ideal length of the amateur draft? Obviously 20 rounds gives you WAY too many players in Single-A so I was wondering what would be the best number of rounds.

It depends on the number of teams you have. I usually use only 5 rounds for the real rosters.

Why does it depend on the number of teams you have? I thought the draft created approximately (number of teams) x (number of rounds) prospects for the draft no matter how many teams there are?

Well if there are 30 teams and 20 rounds by the time it gets to the 20th round all the good, even adequate, players are gone.

It seemed to me that there was a pretty good distribution top-to-bottom no matter how many players there are. It's not like a 5-team, 5-round draft uses the same 25 players that would be on top of a 30-team, 20-round draft. They'd all be Brilliant prospects, and that would throw off your league.

When I tried a historical league, the first couple of seasons I used 20-round drafts. Within 2 years, all the top prospects were just ridiculously good. Which means that to keep the same distribution of prospects there were a huge number of great prospects created. These were the ones that stuck, of course, while those from the bottom 10 rounds were never going to sniff the majors.

Tree is correct, the available players are tailored to the number of rounds. There will always be studs in the first few rounds, mediocre players in the middle, and scrubs at the end. Four or five rounds is usually best if you are using real rosters.

I would agree on the 5 rounds for real rosters. It seems to keep the minors at just about the right level.
