Looking to get into baseball simming after a long layoff

I'm 29 years old and I grew up with an Apple IIC and played Microleague baseball all the time from age 10-18.

I haven't played any baseball sims since then, and am looking to find the best sim out there.

What I'm looking for:

Ability to use current as well as past players, teams etc.

It will just me myself playing, so I'll run one team and let the computers sim the rest.

Different ballparks would be nice, especially historic parks.

I enjoyed controlling the action in microleage, making pitch selections, as well as offenive strategy (hit&run, bunt, steal etc.)

I liked the fact that each at-bat could be narrowed down to a pitch or two.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You need Out of the Park Baseball. It has all the things you want, and more.

That's what I'm hoping to hear.

So it does allow you to to manage during individual games ???

There is no pitch by pitch mode, but you can select basic things like whether to attempt a steal, bunt, hit & run... pitch out, pitch around, intentionally walk a batter, etc...

Is that within a game, or is that just tendencaies .. such as that I prefer to be aggressive on the basepaths,

or go after hitters instead of issuing intentional walks etc.

You can choose. Whether you actually want to sim out a game and you choose for each batter whether to pitch around, IBB, etc. and you can set tendencies for when your simming.

After you've tooled around in a solo league for a while, I would suggest joining an online league to get even more intense competition with 20+ other fellows.

mglcooper, I had an Apple IIC. Did you ever play a rare game named Elfhelm's Bane? No one remembers that text RPG game, but I have to ask anyway. :-)

It was said before...but i'd DL the demo and give a whirl. See if you like it and what not. I'm sure you will, but it's probally the best option to try it out first.

Way to be a fan boy boomboom

I think that baseball mogul doesnt get enough props. It's not designed to be a hardcore sim, but it wont frusterate you. It never crashes. Ever. And its a million times faster. And while it doesnt have as many bells and whistles as OOTP, there are less bugs and its alot easier to figure out. Its kind of a trade off I guess. Its also only $20.

It can do everything you're looking for (historical stats/stadiums 1900-2004)except you cant control the game. You can watch but thats it. In OOTP you can control, but you have too much control over the outcome of the game... and thats part of the challenge of being a GM, that lack of control. Really though, what happens in BBM in the play by play mode wont differ much from what you would do anyway. You have strategy sliders that you can tweak. And if youre willing to tolerate a little dumb baseball, then you should be fine.

If you like to have complete control over your team I would go with OOTP. But there are so many little things you have to control that have such a minute factor in the overall performance of your team; 4 lineups to set, coaches for major, minor leagues, clutch and leadership ratings, spring training, that they all cancel each other out. And yes, you can turn off many of these things, but then you are left with a slow, buggy engine.

So, try out some demos see what you like. Pure Sim 2004 just came out, its a relatively new sim that is kind of interesting, you get a 7 day trial with that, thats at puresim.com. You get three days with OOTP6. And the baseball mogul 2005 demo isnt up, but you can sim a full season with BM2004, and that is at sportsmogul.com.

mogul is, in my opinion, very user friendly and is good for someone who is new to this genre or sport. In fact, I only started looking for baseball sims because I tried out mogul.

http://www.sportsmogul.com/vbulletin...threadid=55688

They now have an Ammy draft, $$$, 100year database that loads up fast(2k4) and a new Transaction logg that is pretty nice!

To me, its a no-brainer. I've played 'em all, and OOTP wins hands-down - the best historical capability, lefthanded batters ( )I started on Mogul too, but I'm not sure how its any better a starter game than OOTP4 or 5 say (the only point of confusion is the Waiver system, and that can be turned off).

That said, their are plenty of other people who have a different opinion. The two guys above prefer Mogul, and there's some that like Puresim. As the chap above said, play the Demos. I never looked back after finding OOTP. I don't play any other games any more.
