Question Is Sportscenter Dead?

http://slate.msn.com/id/2098071/

I started to take offense to the article until I realized that there really isn't any magic in Sportscenter anymore. The article brings up a lot of points, and while I didn't watch Dream Job, I probably would have 5 or so years ago.

Sportscenter was the reason I went to college as a journalism major. I wanted to be on Sportscenter one day. Now, it's just not the same.

I blame it all on Stewart Scott.

Dream Job was just basically a verrrry bad ripoff of American Idol. I watched one episode where it showed that the main person in charge of SC doesn't even bother to watch the show or is just a complete idiot. He criticized someone for constantly bringing up another contestants alma matter saying that it wasn't very professional. Um hello the anchors that YOU hired do this constantly and most of the time it has no bearing on the discussion.

I will sometimes watch one of the early morning episodes since there is rarely anything else on at that time and I use to was half of the 6 PM episode but once they moved Patrick to that slot I quit watching.

I second it.

I have yet to find someone over the age of 18 or above a 100 IQ who likes Stuart Scott.

Sportscenter is definitely on the decline and I'd have to agree that the Stuart Scott "style" has a lot to do with it for me. He's absolutely painful to watch. The forced catch phrases are just moronic. (Is "Yahtzee" really the best the one guy can come up with?)

It's a new era, just b.c you guys aren't in that era that Stuart is going to be bringing, doesn't mean it's on a decline. That's just your thoughts, and these are mine.

JB,what era are you referring to? Believe it or not, but Stuart is probably just as old as Dan Patrick, so what era are you referring to? Do you mean culture? And if so, I completely object to an anchor catering his approach to a specific group of people. Sometimes, when I watch it, I wish Olberman or Kilbourn were back. Because seperately, they all suck.

Has anyone else noticed that ESPN now tends to hire these annoying ex-player analyst:

Baseball has Harold Reynolds
Basketball has Steven Smith
They have someone for football but I can't remember what his name is, he played a couple of downs for the Vikings and now is a bonafide 'expert'.

They all have one thing in common, in order to get their point accross they feel the need to shout.

I don't mind catchphrases such as Yahtzee every once in a while, but when people say them over and over afain they just start to suck. (a la Stuart Soctt with "Boo-Yeah")

Sean Salisbury. Holy CRAP he's an idiot.

Just a bonafide idiot.

And yes, SportsCenter is in a decline, for the same reason MTV has been for years. Too much fluff...why are there game shows in the middle of the program?

His style is for a differen't era. Scott is indeed in his 30's admittingly by him. I enjoy him as well as the current ones they've got. I don't the big difference, as I look for the information they present, and not how they do it as being the overall factor.

Obviously it's not to bad that you guys are still watching it. If you truely thought it were on the decline, you wouldn't be watching it. You can't say you don't otherwise you'd have no case here, as all your "facts" would be heresay and only opinions.

At least Harold Reynolds knows what he's talking about...for the most part. Do any of you remember during football, when they brought in Bobby Cox? That was painful to watch.

Yes, I can. My watching has slowly declined from a time when I used to watch it nearly every night to a time like last year where I watched maybe once a week. But, I haven't seen it for about three months since I stopped watching completely. As such, I can't comment on whether it is continuing its decline over the past three months, but by then it had already declined to a point I could no longer watch. So yes, I can give an opinion on whether or not it has declined while at the same time saying I don't watch it.

Brian Cox? Listening to Bobby talk about football would be interesting, though...

I think that article was dead on...SportsCenter is a silly imitation of what it once was. I won't lay the blame on
Scott alone, but on the whole she-bang...they all suck.

I agree. reynolds does have a clue and knows what he is talking about but Steve Smith is the worse. Smith is like the Johnnie Cochrane of Basketball reporters. God i hate his im always right attitude even when hes been proven wrong.

Sometimes they just dont have the right combination. When Patrick started i didnt think i would like him as an anchor because i was use to the anchor he was replacing but he and Olberman were pretty good as a team. At least i beleive thats who he was teamed with.
They had some good sportscenters back in 92 and then there was upclose. I always thought Roy Firestone did a good job at interviewing instead of just trying to get a controversial remark.

Gradually i just watch for scores and nothing else. Once in a while i watch it when im bored or nothing else is on.
Id rather listen to a Pete Gammons report than any of them.
But thats just me.

When I was in college ('92-'97) I could watch SportsCenter all morning; the exact same show about 3 times in a row. Now I lose interest, perhaps b/c they seem to endlessly pimp the NBA and I have no interest in the NBA.

I like Baseball Tonight - mostly because, compared to others, Karl Ravetch doesn't seem so intent on reeling off catch-phrases. I guess the whole, "ding-dong, the pitch is dead..." routine is what I recall as being his primary schtick from days when he also anchored SportsCenter. Harold Reynolds is among the better athlete-to-analyst figures (and is nowhere near as annoying as the overbearing Smiths, Irvins or Salisbury's of the sports news business.) I'm not a particularly big Gammons fan, but he doesn't make me want to turn the show off, either.
