Thinking of joining an on-line league
I only do solo leagues as of now, was thinking of joining an on-line league. I had some questions though:
1.) What kind of time does one put into these things? 2.) Do I need AIM? I could get it I suppose, I don't really want it though. 3.) What is the best part of being in one? Thanks for the help in advance.

1) As much as you as you want. With just one league you could get by with ten minutes a sim not counting any trade talks.
2) Yes. 3) Good Question. It's just fun is all I can really say. |

1) It all depends on how much time you want to invest. The more time you spend, the more successful your team will be.
2) AIM, though not required, is a great benefit to trading and is also used by many leagues for live sims. 3) You won't find better competition than going against other human owners. Plus it's a great social activity. ![]() I would suggest following a few select "prospect" leagues closely and then contacting the commish to get on the waiting list. Keep in mind that it may take a while if the league is a good one. |

Unless the league is the OTBL- that one's so pathetic and elitist that only snobs give you invitations to it. Rumor has it that you have to be a liberal bleeding heart, so I think you have a heads up there..

Teddy, you should definitely jump into an online league or you are missing out on over half the reason to play OOTP.

I was in your position just a month or so ago.
Then I joined one league. Realized it didn't take much time, so I joined another and another. Now I have plenty of free time late at night so it's no burden on me, but seriously you could do a good job in a single league spending way less time than you do solo simming. Mainly because someone else is running the games. You just get to do the fun parts. Yep, if it's no big deal for you AIM greatly enhances the experience. Nothing like working at a trade live with another GM. I still run solo sims, but this is a much better challenge. You have to be more creative to work a good trade and you get much better and more interesting offers from real people. Check out some leagues, look for ones that meet your requirements (historical vs. fantasy etc) and give one a try. If you're a big baseball fan you'll be hooked in no time. Just wondering, what kind of league would you be looking for? You may get some offers here from leagues with openings. |

Well I was in the same situation a little while ago. Here's my thoughts so far:
1) Minimum: probably about 30 mins a week. Realistically, I spend time each week looking at my team, results and box scores etc as well as scouting the other teams in the league for potential trades. The more time you put in, the more you will enjoy it. 2) Depends on the league. Instant messaging is a nice fast way to negotiate trades so I would recommend it. 3) That would be a tossup between competing with humans and the social aspects of having a shared league to talk about. Hope that helps! A good league run by kq76 is in my sig below if you're interested. It has been a well-run and enjoyable league so far. I think there's still a few open teams, some of them are quite good. |

Just wait until you swing your first deal or are in your first penant race. You'll see why we play in online leagues.
Solo is fun, but playing against the AI simply doesn't compare to playing against people. Not only because it's more challenging, but also because of the social aspect. I mean, if your big bruiser broke the season HR record one year in a solo league, who are you gonna brag to?

since you seem to not be in a hurry anyway, jump on some waiting lists, then you will find some of the better leagues.

Dood- the fun on online leagues reached its zenith for me tonight- I won a one game playoff for my first playoff appearance - a 1-0 game where the opposing team had a player on base in the top of the 9th, and the guy who was pitching was the guy who blew the last game of the season (And my guarenteed playoff shot). It had me as into it as real baseball ever could...
