Is there something I'm missing with perfect team management?

So I've managed to get into Low gold after a few seasons, and my team on paper is pretty good. A lineup of almost all perfect level players that have good stats and seem to be used by other teams in the league. my pitching staff as well is mostly comprised of perfect level players that other teams have as well. But when I look at those other teams, their versions of the players are performing at a significantly better pace than my players are. Is this just a luck of the simulations thing or is there an aspect to the game mode I'm missing that would help? I haven't touched anything with the strategy tab so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

You’re not missing anything — Perfect Team intentionally has big season-to-season variance. Even identical Perfect cards can perform very differently on different rosters.

• You’re probably missing a few “super-perfects” (101–104) that quietly separate the best Gold/Diamond teams from everyone else.
• Normalization matters: PT adjusts the yearly run environment, so some cards run hot or cold depending on the meta.
• Variance is cranked up on purpose: If every Honus, Pedro, or Mantle performed identically, the upper leagues would all look the same.
• The climb gets brutal: Above Silver, you’re competing with people who invest serious money or serious spreadsheet time. Diamond/Perfect is basically a membership tier.
• Strategy only matters at the edges: Not using the strategy tab isn’t sinking you, but it also won’t override variance.
• Some of it really is just dice rolls: PT still simulates randomness under the hood — streaks, slumps, outliers, all intentional.

Bottom line: your cards aren’t worse — PT just has more randomness and meta-dependent performance than a normal OOTP league. Even the same players can have wildly different results season to season.

One more thing; Competing in PT this late in the year is even more than brutal if your looking to do better than Gold. Most of the members your playing against have been polishing their team for the better part of the year. Catching up with them at this point requires significant resources of either time or money.

gotcha, I do have a couple positions that I switch batters based off the handedness of the starting pitcher. Namely I switch DH between David Ortiz and Edgar Martinez, and I switch catcher between Mickey Cochrane and Gary Carter 99 (I am trying to get drake baldwin to be my full time catcher with cochrane as the backup). Not sure if that makes it difficult for players to get in a rhythm if they keep getting taken out of the lineup every other game.

What's your roster looking like right now? Would love to see some screenshots of who you got right now.

A few observations on where you could improve your roster:
  • On the pitching side, Leskanic and Marichal are the weak links in your rotation from a skill standpoint and are definitely the first candidates for dropping if you find some upgrades. Marichal's HRA kills him in the upper levels, and Leskanic's very low control will give him issues. Fernandez may be getting a bit outdated, but that's a very unlucky start for him.
  • Dazzy Vance might be a bit better as a bullpen arm for where you're at on the pyramid, but he'd probably be, in my opinion, the 3rd pitcher on the chopping block.
  • Hitting-wise, I feel you could better utilize George Brett as a platoon player rather than a guy who plays both ways. I'd look into possibly saving up for someone like a Mike Schmidt (L10 28,870) or a BBRef 7 Alex Bregman (55,000 L10) to be that vL platoon bat.
  • I'd also look into getting a bat for 2B to replace Marcus Giles so you could use Tony Phillips as a utility guy. A decent budget option could be Tubby Scales (28,448 L10) but Eli Willits or Joe Morgan could be decent options as well to save up for.
In general, I'd also look into playing some Perfect Draft tournaments to try to get some Clubhouse Stars. There's some good players in there that could help your team out as well once you collect a decent amount of them. Let me know if you need any advice on that, too!

Yeah, I've been looking into a new backup second baseman for a bit. I guess some of my lineup construction doesn't utilize the players I have to their fullest though like you said. I got sort of too focused on making sure every player that was a starter had a backup that wasn't a starter because of the stamina system. My main thing will actually being able to get the points needed for all of those purchases, which means if I want them, I'll have to start tuning in for the twitch drops again.
