Post OOTP 25 & Linux

Hey friends,

so, Linux has become a major headache with several SDK updates that turned out to be incompatible. We gave our best, but so far this was not good enough, we could not get it to work properly and hence we will launch without a native Linux version this year. We will revisit the topic sometime after launch, though. I'll let you know when there's an update.

However, in our tests the Windows Steam version worked fine on Linux using Steam's compatibility mode (Proton). So you won't have to worry if you only own a Linux system

Thanks!
Markus

As a Linux only user, that should be fine. Hopefully OOTP 25 was tested with the proprietary NVIDIA driver and Proton, since the driver can be unpredictable sometimes.

Unhappy

Doesn't work for me under Steam/Proton, I get the following message

"Steam must be running to play this game. SteamAPI_Init() failed."

Same issue here as well, made an account for the forum instead of a review.

"Steam must be running to play this game. SteamAPI_Init() failed."

Same result on Proton Experimental, 9.0, 8.0-5, and hotfix.

NVIDIA drivers, 3080 GPU.

I'm seeing the same SteamAPI_Init() error message when trying to start the game, and it then immediately closes.

Well this is a bummer.

I'm curious what distro everybody is running? Also whether you installed using the flatpak or with your distros own Steam package? I know I've had some issues in the past using the flatpak version of Steam.

Linux Mint .deb package for Steam.
I imagine it's different for SteamOS since it's based on Arch.

Ill give it a shot when I get home after work. I have openSUSE, Arch and Linux Mint installed. The Steam package for openSUSE and Arch are a bit newer so ill see if that makes a difference.

I'm very curious what they tested it on!

I hope they make the Steam Deck OS available on desktops soon.

I do not have the game yet, but when I do. I will try it on my Steam Deck and see if it works "out of the box"

I can save you the time. It's giving that same error on Steam Deck. I made a post in the Technical Support section about it.

OOTP 24 works well on Steam Deck and I was really enjoying Perfect Team so I assumed that OOTP 25 would work as well. I don't have a Windows PC so if this doesn't get fixed in the next week or two then I'll probably have to request a refund on Steam. I hope it's an easy fix for the developers.

Thanks for being clear that this is going to need work next week. I had hoped for a quick fix this weekend and it’s good to be clear that won’t happen. I’d rather the game worked on Linux but, in the absence of that, I do appreciate the clarity.

I’m disappointed because I was really excited by the new features this year but I guess I can just play OOTP 24 some more until the problem is fixed.

I will have to refund the game in the meantime since there isn’t a fix coming immediately. I hope to buy it again when Linux is supported, although it will depend on the price at that point in time.

having to choose between securing pre-order bonuses and not buying a game I can't actually play yet is a real feel bad moment.

as is getting a late start in PT.

disappointing since this has been one of my favorite linux native franchises going back years.

thank you for the transparency at least that a fix is not coming this week.
