Nasir Adderley, S for the Chargers retires at age 25.
Good for him. Getting out of there while he is still in one piece. |

Hear, hear. I wish more players would take that route. Listen to what your body is telling you. Problems w/the brain are not for play-play.

I think the biggest concern, I mean outside of the literal character issues ,was that he'd have to serve actual time and this looks like something he could easily get out of the way by the time camps open. I still think that if Laremy Tunsil could get knocked out of the top 10 by appearing in a video wearing a gas mask bong, Carter will dip a lot because of this. Which in part is fine with me because I keep seeing people mocking him to Seattle and a. I think they're scared off of bad-character high picks after Malik McDowell, and b. he's a bad fit in their scheme (maybe he's good enough that you adapt the scheme but it's not so easy to make a 4-3 DT work in a 3-4 defense).

In 99% of the cases, if you get stopped or caught drag racing, you're not getting a year probation. I think it's because people died they gave him a higher sentence. Normally it's everything but the probation.

I mean, it was pot. I understand that some teams might have cared, especially a few years ago, but I think some just plain wouldn't, whereas drag racing indicates a person who makes stupid, risky decisions off the field. This time around he was "lucky" enough that he only caused another person to be killed; the next time... well, in some ways Malik McDowell is a best case scenario.

That seems awfully reductionist to me, as marijuana "abuse" has only gotten people suspended or "kept people off the field" because it was against league policy. It's like if the league had a policy that said players couldn't play speed chess and a clip came out of Laremy Tunsil taking on like 5 people at once in a chess tournament.

Again, it's a decision making flag. How are you going to act this way before you get the bag? It's a weighing of pros & cons always. Does the talent overweigh the potential off field flags? If I'm a GM, I'm scared right now. That he could be months from finally cashing in and he is losing his self control @ this moment. What happens when I give him millions and he no longer has "class" to fill his day? Is this a young man or a man-child?

So feel free to call me insane for this take.
The Jets have an otherwise good team outside of WR. Why not trade say a 5th to the Colts for Minshew (or sign him before the Colts did) and use him as your starter for a year. I am under no illusions that Minshew is a top tier QB or even tier 2. But he has seemed at least competent every time I have seen him. With a good supporting cast, I think you could make the wildcard. Why spend two firsts and a second on a 40 year old Rodgers who is a 50 million cap hit? Maybe I don’t have a football mind. But I don’t get NFL front offices sometimes. I wish my Commanders would do this. We will not get a QB with the 16th pick. We have an otherwise competent team. Use that pick on a TE or a WR and use Minshew for a year and see what happens. If it goes wrong, then you are just out a low pick or some money. |

I like Minshew but his lack of arm strength really minimizes his margin for error as a quarterback. He has to be able to stay on schedule consistently because he's not capable of making the special throws that the top tier of QBs can, and while Minshew's largely done a good job of that in his career, NFL front office types presumably just see his lack of arm as a little too much to overcome for him to be treated as a starting option. As for why the Jets would pursue Rodgers over a quarterback from the big second tier of QBs (like Carr or Garoppolo who were available in free agency), you just need such a good situation around this guys to be a viable Super Bowl contender. The Jets have talent but they wouldn't contend with one of those guys; given Rodgers' age and his play this past season there's a definite chance he's not in that top tier of quarterback any more either, but out of the teams seeking a quarterback move the Jets were the right one to pull the biggest gamble imo. Also I absolutely do not think the Jets will give up two 1sts and a 2nd for Rodgers. Given his age and year-to-year status, the way I'm looking at it is this: if the Jets give up less than a 1st, they won the leverage battle with Green Bay. If they give up a 1st plus, they lost. If they give up a 1st and nothing else that's a push that probably still swings a little towards Green Bay but imo is the most likely outcome. I could possibly be way off base here but Joe Douglas has done a good job not getting fleeced in deals in the past (you can see how low my standards are as a Jets fan to compliment the General Manager for not getting fleeced), so I personally don't see the Jets giving up any more than their 1st and like a mid round pick. |

As damientheomen3 pointed out, the Jets have to be careful on what they give. And a 1st is the most they want to give. However, the Packers want more and supposedly the two sides are far apart as of yesterday. How long can the Packers wait? Check it out, this is straight from Spotrac.. Quote:
By all accounts, and everything I've heard, the Jets do not want to give up more than a 1st, and they do not want to pay Rodgers his current contract. Supposedly Rodgers is ok taking less. Let's see what that translates to. |

But most know when is the "right" time to do that stupid stuff. Carter doesn't. The racing isn't the flag. The weight gain isn't the flag. Racing & gaining weight & being out of shape before you're drafted is the flag. The dude is throwing away $. He's not throwing away his career. He is losing the salary a top 3 pick would get for the $ a top 10-15 pick would get. GM's are asking themselves "Are the potential problems Carter could bring worth the #__ pick & the salary that slot demands? Or is there another player that would bring me similar value but fewer sleepless nights?"
