Experiment time
When creating a historical league we have the option to set the number of at bats and innings pitched the game will use to adjust hitters/pitchers. This is great for making sure we don't get guys that had 6 hits in 12 at bats leading the free world in hitting every season.
We also get to set the number of at bats/innings pitched the game will use to basically make pitchers/hitters bad. Now, this has always made me scratch my head a little. I understand the purpose, but I've always wondered if it was a little bit unnecessary, since we already set a number to adjust hitters and pitchers in the above mentioned setting. What I've decided to do is, create a historical league using single season 1year recalc with adjust hitters set to 130 and adjust pitchers set to 22. I have the second setting(make bad) set at 0 for both hitters and pitchers. I started the league in 1901. Talent Change Randomness is set a 1. Injuries are set to low. Fatigue is set at high. Suspensions are disabled. Coaching and storylines are off. I've fast simmed each season from 1901-1918. I've started slower play for the 1919 season. What I'm wanting to see is, will leaving the "make bad" setting at 0 soften the blow for great players that miss a season or 2? For example, Ted Williams during the war years. I've always preferred 1 year recalc by far to 3 or 5 year recalc, but end up using 5 more often than not, because it stinks to see a great player like Williams become a bench player or a bottom of the lineup guy when the war arrives. I'm hoping that setting the "make bad" number of at bats/innings pitched to 0 will allow the game to let guys that miss seasons suffer less of a blow. |

Re: Experiment time
David, I've experienced the exact same thing you discussed (players sucking during years they missed). Please us know your findings.
PS - I've also experienced the player with minimal at bats and a great average. See William Wood from 1887 .. 28 AB, 14 hits, 2 triples. When imported with minimal reduction numbers, you get a career like this: |

This has been somewhat discussed/talked about in other threads. I'll try to find that when I get some time, but generally, the "adjust" option is going to consider the "missing" AB's or IP as being somewhere near league average and the "make bad" setting is going to consider the missing AB's or IP as being somewhere around replacement level.
The "missing" AB's or IP being the difference between the real life number and the number you have set for those adjustments. So, you have "adjust" at 130 and the player had 120 at-bats it is basically adding 10 "average" at-bats to their real life totals to come up with their ratings. |
