League Totals and Modifiers

How do you progress your game into the future?
What kinds of things do you strive for?
Any tips, tricks, and/or advice you have would be appreciated.

What do you wish to accomplish in OOTP? I'd like to help you with LT and LTM but way more info is needed. Describe how you currently play and perhaps post a screenshot of your league.

Hard to say, for certain. I'd kinda love a game that looks like the early 90s, but is also realistic in that Starters will never regularly go 7 innings again in our lifetimes.

I'm not quite sure if these impact the sim results at all..

For instance, I know if you turn off Shifting, nothing changes. BABIP is not impacted at all...based on the 4 sims I've tried with nothing but that setting turned off.

Yes they do. I inadvertently set SH to normal from rarely and it messed with half a season and a much lower LTM needed. The key point is that general strategic tendencies are more powerful than LTM if misapplied.

I'm not seeing any changes there. I just completed 3 more sims of the 2021 season to triple check again.

Three 2021 MLB sims. The only setting change was "Shifting" set to none.

BAPIP for those three years...
.306
.306
.307

BABIP would be higher with no shifting, BAs too. But the BAs are the same as well.

The BAs and BABIP figures mirror the default settings for the 2021 season with a margin of variance being no more than <=>.003

Same with Stolen Bases. Changing SBs from Normal to Very Often has no substantive impact on league totals for SBs or CS based on the sims I've run, whereas changing the modifiers has a direct impact on the numbers.

I really like .749 to .849 for Attempts and 1.200 to 1.300 for Success %.

If you change those settings before the game calculates the league totals modifiers on the first day of the season, you should not see any changes to stuff like BABIP and steal rate / success rate. The game actually sims 3 seasons with your Opening Day rosters, turning all injury off, and calibrates the league totals that way (I believe those totals are then averaged out and used for the preseason predictions but I’m not 100% sure). So, if you have shifts set to high and calibrate, you should wind up with the exact same league wide BABIP as if you had them set to none (again, assuming you made that change prior to Opening Day).

Just to be clear here: the game, at least in its current form, is not physics based, it’s stat based. That’s one reason why it does so well in simulating historical seasons where we have little to no physics data.

Ahh..ok. So if the BABIP is set to .301, that's what you'll get (approximately, year to year) regardless of other settings.

A related question...
How do I get the league to evolve more/less Totals and Strategies? Or do they? The modifiers adjust each season, but they only change within a variance based on the totals.

I have League Evolution "more/less pitching/offense" both turned on. I have the "automatically adjust league strat when advancing" checked. What else am I missing?
That screenshot is from year 2033 and the totals are the same as Opening Day 2021. I'd have thought the league would have shifted in some way by now.

I believe that clicking “allow evolution of the league” will, among other things, have increases or decreases in offense, among other things. You may or may not want the “other things”, though, which include relocations and expansion.

This is how I've had the league setup since day 1 and nothing has changed.

So... if you're out in the future, you might actually want to turn recalc off. Recalc is kind of great for historical seasons in getting any kind of player either generated by the game or imported to look like baseball from that period. In the future, recalc is just going to recalculate the stats so that they look like the last year available. If you turn that off, the engine will just keep churning out stats based on the last recalc, and truth be told that probably won't change much in an individual year, but it could change around a little...

I've never played with the "More/Less" pitching and/or Offense options selected. I wonder if it's possible in an MLB sim for the league to eventually come full circle and have another Dead Ball Era?

Checking the boxes in the "Stats & AI" tab automatically checks the boxes in the "Historical" tag. Can't uncheck one without the other. Unchecking them all changes nothing and checking them all changes nothing.

Seems like last year's game was more dynamic...but it almost always tended to having SPs get like 400+ Ks per year, so it was kinda deadballish...ha.

I can't get 22 to automatically evolve at all.

Unchecking them all changes nothing... this year. It also changes nothing next year, which is kind of the point.

Right, I get that. I'm just saying that whether those boxes are checked or unchecked, the Totals do not change. It's as though my Totals are locked, even though the box for locking the Totals is unchecked.

Yes, exactly, that’s the point. The totals do not change, which means that as different players randomly enter the league or get bumps/maluses by the game engine, the game does not attempt to compensate for this by raising or lowering the yearly totals and over time you may see the actual, generated stats change. In a 30 team league with full minors I’m guessing they won’t change much but the place to look at that would be the league history or the statistics page, not the league totals modifiers page.

The league totals do not evolve/change over time and aren't meant to? I'm eternally stuck in the "2021" league environment unless I manually change it myself?

Sorry...I'm just confused on how the league scoring environment is designed to evolve if the totals do not change.

That’s the gist of it, yes. The game takes those league totals, sims a season, compares the created totals with the league totals (on a rate basis), adjusts the modifiers next to them (for instance, if the modifier for HRs is 1.000 and there were 10% more HRs than expected in the sim, it lowers that to 0.900), and does this two more times. Doing this makes it wind up with totals very similar to reality on a historical basis, although if Opening Day rosters are wonky then wonky results can ensue. If you’re out past 2020 the game will do those sims based on I think the 2020 league totals (that’s how the game has always done it in the past and I doubt they changed that based on just one season) each and every season you allow it to recalculate them.

Maybe the solution is to change the year of the total, for example if yo want less HR than in 2019 maybe change the batting environment to 2016 or 2017..

I keep LT static and use LTM's to change up various outputs if I want. I can have HR year(s), SB, doubles, more IP by starters etc..

I use an excel spreadsheet to track year to year output and give LTM's for each. I find autocalc is prone to bigger swings in output than I like.
