Best way to save ACE for the Wildcard game?

With 3 games all playoff spots were settled. My team was set to play in the wildcard game no matter what. So I wanted to rest David Price that was set to pitch the second to last game. Can't put him in reserve or he is lost. Tried to put him at #5, but that scheduled him to pitch the last regular season game. So I tried to take him out of the rotation and left him unclassified. He ended up pitching and is lost for my wildcard matchup.

Is there a setting that I am missing? I should be able to rest my starting pitchers for the playoffs. It would be nice if my reserve pitchers can pitch in a final regular season series?

What is the correct or best way to rest starting pitchers?

The best way to prevent a pitcher from going down the stretch is to remove him from the rotation and bench him for however many days you need him benched in the individual player strategy settings. The caveat to this is that you have to make sure that there's someone on your roster who will be able to start on full rest when the benched pitcher's turn comes up. Otherwise you destroy your bullpen and/or have SPs pitch when they're not supposed to.

Why cant you just count out the number of games and set a strict order rotation so that his turn comes up the first game after the regular season?

I tried both strategies before. This week I tried benching him but he pitched anyway. With all the bells and whistles in this game I am surprised there isn’t an easier way or setting to do this rather than manipulating.

I have never had a pitcher start a game when I went into the individual game strategies and specifically set it to bench them x number of days. If you just move them to the pen and select none specified they can still pitch. You have to select a specific number of days, and off days count.

Bench X number of days has always worked for me, too. If you leave them in the rotation but choose to bench them the AI will throw a bullpen game.

I usually switch from "start highest rested" to "strict order" and count the number of games to make sure he would be the one to pitch game 163, aka wild card game. Sometimes, I have to go to 4 or 6 man rotation to make it work. Assumes you log in early enough Saturday evening to have enough games to work with.

That works best for me too. I usually do it late Saturday afternoon because this old man does not stay up late anymore. I go to bed early and relax with an hour or two of TV or a book.

I agree with setting it up ahead. Then you still have that Ace going to help make sure you get to the wildcard game.

Yeah you can do it ahead of time easily from pretty much any point in the season.

OP said there were only three games left so it seems trivial to set a strict order with your wild card pitcher fourth.

I missed the part about 3 games left. In that case, you can "bench" the player, but I've found this isn't 100% guaranteed. The best bet in this case to "hide" your WC starter is to change his position to 1B; just make sure to change it back after the season ends.

Only 3 days left is a little late to be worrying about your Ace.

Some times you only have that much time left. Can't worry about playoffs until you clinch.
