I saw a few threads about the AI challenges with the Rule 5 draft, but didn't see this one called out specifically. Apologies if this is a duplicate post.
It seems that the AI doesn't take Rule 5 status into account when evaluating a trade. I discovered this by accident in my first offseason when I drafted a talented young prospect who was not ready for my big league roster, then included him in a trade for another prospect who was not a R5 pick. This allowed me to "cash in" the R5 pick for an equivalent player who I could properly place on a minor league roster. The team I traded with eventually had to return the R5 player to the original club as he was nowhere near MLB ready, so I fleeced them pretty hard.
In the subsequent offseason I validated my assumption by pulling this off again multiple times. It was a really cheap and dirty way to upgrade my farm system. Moving forward I have vowed only to use this cheap trick against the Yankees and Dodgers
