Demotion vs. Optioned
I was cruising through my teams transaction log today and I noticed something that I hadn't in the past. When I move a guy from the ML club to AAA it says I "demoted" said player. When I check other teams transaction logs I see "optioned" player.
Whats the difference?

no difference in reality just you know what you did and the opponent would see it as a Option since you used the option to demote the player

Plus willing to bet they did it this way for those who play in leagues. This helps them out. I like the idea.

If you look on your own team's transaction history it will use the work optioned, not demoted.

OOTP's terminology isn't always right, something I'd like them to fix. For example, "purchased" is used incorrectly in OOTP transactions logs.
The demotion terminology might be right, I haven't checked. In real life, if a guy is on your 40-man roster and on your active roster, if he has options left, you can "option him to AAA". He then stays on your 40-man roster. If he does not have options left, or if you want to remove him from your 40-man, then you have to expose him to waivers in order to demote him. If he clears waivers, you can then "outright him to AAA" (i.e. remove him from the 40-man and send him to AAA). If a player is on your active roster but is not on your 40-man (Spring Training invites), then a team is free to assign him to the minors irrespective of options and with no need of waivers, and then the team would "assign him to AAA". "demoted" is a non-specific term that could mean any of the three things above, and since it's imprecise, a Transactions Log should probably avoid using it, except in cases where players are being moved around the minor league system ("demoted from AA to hi-A" makes perfect sense, there is no better word to use in that situation). Would love to see this (hopefully) very minor issue addressed for 18 - it's always been a peeve of mine. Use the right terminology, and make sure human teams and AI teams are using the same terms. It's on my wish list. |

I remember suggesting this consistent language: Called up: a player is added to the ML active roster for the first time from the ML 40-man roster Recalled: a player is added to the ML active roster after being on option to a minor league club Optioned: a player is sent from the ML active roster to the roster of a minor league club while being retained on the ML 40-man roster Outrighted: a player is sent from the ML active roster to the roster of a minor league club and is removed from the ML 40-man roster Selected or Contract Purchased: a player is added to the ML 40-man roster from the roster of a minor league club Promoted: a player is advanced from a lower minor league classification club to a higher minor league classification club Demoted: a player is moved down from a higher minor league classification club to a lower minor league classification club |

The worst one is when you invite a non-roster guy to Spring Training. The OOTP Transactions Log will say you "purchased his contract", which is not only completely wrong, it's really confusing if you're trying to understand what transactions a team has made.
