Any help is welcome
Im starting a Youtube channel, KentPlaysGamesHorribly, in which I hope to play a wide variety of games, including OOTP(already have an episode of my Braves franchise up). However, I use a Mac for my gaming, which as most of you probably already know, has a small selection of games on it, and isn't optimized for gaming. Therefore, I've started an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to purchase my very own gaming computer, which would expand my gaming library, as well as improve my OOTP sim times(Mac is soooooo slow with OOTP). If you guys could contribute any amount, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, don't forget to check out my channel, which as I noted above, is called KentPlaysGamesHorribly. If you have something bad to say, you can go away.
Here's the link to my campaign. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/h...t/x/14509592#/ Last edited by Kent814; 07-04-2016 at 03:43 AM. |

I think this is a little harsh. There is a difference between asking for assistance to complete a project, and begging for money. While I may question his choice of venue to ask for help, I appreciate his commitment to his YouTube channel. Best of luck.

Yes if i were going to beg for money this would be the last place I would do it. I simply put this here because i want to start a youtube channel, and as a teen, I simply dont have the money to afford my own expensive computer, and wanted to know if you guys wanted to help out. If you didnt want to contribute, you can simply hit the X on your tab, or just ignore this thread.

just arguing semantics... that's not harsh, because it is true. that is not a project. that is asking for money to for a personal purchase. hey, if it works, that's awesome for you, really. i wouldn't tell you not to do it, but you cannot deny what it is with semantical gymnastics. i've been the recipient of similar charity when i was younger, although i didn't ask for it, the person just knew of the need. so, i woudln't be a crumudgeon if someone was willing to do the same for you.
some of these "fundme" sites are terrible. i knew someone who was asking for medical bill help even though their insurance covered significantly more than what they were asking for.... no shame (not a comment related to kent, but the sites themselves and that person i know, lol. kent isn't misrepresenting what it's for.). as with most things, a few bad apples ruin the integrity of a potentially great idea (all the fundme, kickstarter stuff related to non-commercial things that help people). |

the only thing i argued with was that you said it was harsh. i didn't say much about kent at all. i even wished him good luck, or at least no ill-will. telling him it isn't begging is teaching him a sense of entitlement.
the plugging comment might be borderline rude, but that was in good fun from what i can tell. nothing anyone should feel guilty about, that's for sure. the begging comment was spot on. that's not being rude. that's the same as calling a fig a fig and a trough a trough. |

You know, reality is harsh. This kid is asking for money for a cause that has no public value. It is literally like me, walking into a bank and asking for an interest-free $2000 loan.
My suggestion if you want a publicly funded computer: actually provide something of value. Start your channel and prove that you have the slightest bit of talent that is deserving of a free computer. Show that you actually have a worthy project, and then ask for help.

When you say reality is harsh, you come off like a curmudgeon who doesn't want to help others. Some people help random people just because it's in their personality to help, and your obviously not one of those people, but you don't need to go around telling kids not to go for what they want, or telling them how to do it(unless it's illegal). If you don't want to donate, just ignore this. If this sounds harsh, thats because Im just trying to raise money for a new computer and you're trying to dump on it just because you believe that reality is harsh. This is an online forum just scroll past this. And then you say it like you going into a bank and asking for an interest free loan, like thats the same thing as a teenager asking for a couple bucks from some fellow OOTPers. I thought that because I would feature OOTP on my channel, maybe they might want to contribute to the spread of the game, which could only benefit the company. Now Im going to stop before you tell me to get off your lawn.

Kent,
I before you discount Jpeters you might want to listen to the advice he gave you. While his tone might have been a bit harsh he did give you good advice. If people donate money to you they are making an investment in you. This is true even if they don't expect money back. If you asking for an investment you need to first show a proof of concept. My advice would be grow your channel and seek out ad revenue. Then put all your earnings back into your hobby. Once you get a big enough following, you can try to convince people to invest in by donating. You can also approach manufactures for samples to plug on your channel. Good luck.

I think the reason you got backlash is because you are asking for sponsorship from people you dont know and that you haven't provided any value to.
here is some advice if you are interested.I am a father of 4 and have been a coach of mostly high school kids for over 30 years. I do have some perspective on this. if it helps great, if not - no big deal just another grown up talking too much - I was about as poor as a person could be when I was younger, and now I am doing fairly well. this is because of good fortune, good people and a lot and I mean a lot of sweat. nothing beats hard work. obnoxious grown up cliche? sure, but it is because it is so true. - your idea of a you tube channel has some value - however you have the model backwards. You need to create the work first, and create, create and create and then after a long time some people may have interest in giving you funding. No one is going to fund you for work you intend to do unless they are your family, or you have a long history of making other people money. check out what the Green brothers did with crash course. Years of great content before they ever raised any money. You want people to give you money to watch you play video games. that is never going to happen because it doesnt add value to people and there are already hundreds of thousands of videos like that for free. no leverage -checkout this book from the founder or reddit. He really lays out a very interesting plan for young people vs the "normal" go to college, get a job route. it is a great book and I encourage all young people to read it. If you PM me your mailing address (or ebook email address if you prefer that) I will buy you this book. It really is a great guideline. - bottom line in order to make money in this world you need to either make money for someone else (a job say at mcdonalds is really you turning your 10/hour of labor into 50/hour for the corporation) or you need to provide something they value. - the number one thing I wish I understood when I was younger is you always are worth what you have the leverage to negotiate. Why did I get 3.35/hour working for jack in the box in 1982? because that was all the leverage I had. why do some seemingly mediocre NBA 10th players get millions, because that is the leverage they have. the best thing you can do is work to increase your leverage. going to school, learning to code, learning to analyze data - those things increase your leverage. Never stop increasing your leverage. it is the only real way to go from broke to wealthy. good luck

Like many expensive hobbies sometimes you have to grind. I'm a musician. Buying gear is also expensive. I could sound more professional with better gear or studio time. Whenever I want new gear or wish to upgrade what I have, I save up what I earn playing shows or song sales and let my hobby pay for itself. One could also seek the help of labels or studios to help fund their projects. But, in order to get their interest one still have to create demos and a following. Without either, no one is going to invest in you. Remember, people are investing in you whether or not they expect a return. You have to sell yourself and the project in order for people to make an investment. No one really contributes or donates. It's an investment in you. If you get a scholarship for school it's not free money. It's an investment in your future. I also know a photographer who does the same thing I do with my music. He sells a lot of content to newspapers, magazines, ect. however, in order to buy new equipment or upgrades he saves the money made as direct result of the hobby and puts in back into the hobby. He also had to grind, practice and create a portfolio before his work found a following. There are definitely ways to get money for your computer within your hobby but you have to be willing to grind to get there. The other obvious answer is find a side job to raise the funds. Maybe your parents might be willing to contribute a % of the price of computer if you earn the rest on your own? Instead of asking for the computer as a gift see if they'll let you work for it. Just my 2 cents.

Hey guys I want to buy a DJI Pro 3 drone in case anyone wants to help contribute. It's only for personal use unless you live near and want a flyover of your house. Just an FYI

Didnt realize how much people on this site wanted to crush the dreams of teenagers. Can a moderator please close this thread since nothing positive is coming out of it?
