Where's Mr. Cub?
I'm playing an All Time Greats season and was shocked to discover that Ernie Banks is missing in action. How can this be?
On the other hand Dan Spillner is on the Cleveland squad. Go figure. And please, no Cleveland Indians wisecracks. We fans have suffered enough over the decades. |

Hey, he went 12–10 with 21 saves and a 2.49 ERA for the Tribe in 1982. What's your damage?

I was always partial to Ernie "Macho" Camacho rather than Spillner.
(though I have to admit, 4.4 WAR out of a reliever is pretty solid for Spillner in '82) |

I hadn't actually noticed Banks missing, because Tinker is a legitimate starting choice and hadn't examined all the benches for all options that much. (Though I probably would start Banks now that I think about it.) But there are a lot of mistakes -- most notably with inconsistent patterns on whether players can appear on multiple teams, resulting in many sub-optimal choices. (No Nap Lajoie on Cleveland, when the team was named for him for a decade? And that's not really the worst one per se. There are a lot.) But even that one doesn't explain Banks... honestly, you have to take those roster sets with a grain of salt. I asked a while back if there was any pattern to selection choices, never got a response. |

Ideally, if it's an all time greats per team roster, the rosters would be constructed in this way:
(For the purposes of determining what teams are defunct, teams that relocated from 1871-1903 are considered defunct, while teams that relocated from 1904-present are considered to be the same franchise as the city they relocated to. For instance, Washington 1960 = Minnesota 1961, but Milwaukee 1901 and Baltimore 1901-02 are defunct.) POSITION PLAYERS * Top player per position per team (defined by WAR) gets an automatic roster spot. Designated hitters count for their primary defensive position, so David Ortiz is eligible for the Red Sox 1B spot. If the same player would be on two different teams, the team they accrued more WAR for takes precedence. * The top 10 players at each position across MLB history, if not already placed on a team, are given automatic spots with the team they accrued the most WAR with, provided that this team still exists in some form. * The other position player spots are filled by the roster maker's discretion. PITCHERS * Top 5 starters and top 3 relievers per team get automatic roster spots, with the restriction that at least 2 of the starters must be from 1969 onward and at least 1 of the relievers must be from 1994 onward, as defined by the midpoint of their career with the team. (Year restrictions are to prevent teams from being stacked with deadball pitchers.) * The top 50 starters and top 30 relievers across MLB history, if not already placed on a team, are given automatic spots. Same rules as for position players. * The other pitcher spots are filled by the roster maker's discretion. |
