Is Kadin Reynolds the ABA's Babe Ruth?
Although Raleigh's star second baseman Kadin Reynolds is having a slow start in 1992 by his standards, his career numbers are at or near the top of the charts in all of the major hitting categories. Since the ABA's inception in 1987, Reynolds has been an all-star every year except 87, and he was deserving that year as well. He has won 4 consecutive Outstanding Batter Of The Year Awards (1988-1991), and 10 Batter Of The Month Awards. He has also hit for the cycle. He was selected with the eighth pick in the first round of the ABA dispersal draft, and has only worn a Raleigh Roughneck uniform for his entire career. Only 31 years old, Reynolds still has plenty of good years left in him to add to his already impressive career stats, which will set the bar for future offensive stars of the ABA.
Kadin has a .346 career batting average, good for 5th in the league, however, of the four ahead of him, only Portland's RF William Rodriguez has anything close to Reynolds' power. Speaking of power, Kadin leads the ABA in career homeruns with 248. Second on the list with 234 is Hartford's 37 year old third baseman Shane "Captain" Picard. There are several players in the low 200's but they are all older than Kadin with the exception of Ft Worth's catcher, Remington Poe who is 7 months younger than Reynolds and has 202 dingers. The only player in the top 25 under 30 years of age is Pittsburgh's catcher Michael Whitesel who at 27, already has 168 homers, and could someday catch up to Kadin if his knees hold out. Reynolds places 2nd in career RBI's with 660, one behind the leader, Picard, however with Reynolds being 6 years younger than the cap'n, he is sure to eclipse Picard's final career total. The only other player close is Kadin's teammate and bash brother Rupert Aiello, who has 654 ribbies. Kadin is the ABA career leader in Runs Scored with 679, 27 ahead of Portland's Rodriguez. On top of all the hitting accolades, Reynolds also boasts a solid glove at second base, even if his range is slightly lacking. The only strike against Kadin is that he has not been able to lead the Roughnecks to even a first place finish, much less a pennant or a championship. Raleigh did sneak into the playoffs as the Kuffrey League wildcard team in 1989, however they were quickly eliminated by the Ft. Worth Roadrunners. With the Roughnecks currently sitting in last place in the KL East, 13 games behind division leaders Richmond, it may be a long time before Kadin gets another sniff at the playoffs. While there are many top hitting superstars in the ABA like Chicago's Daltron Engstrom, Nashville's Charlie Fonseca, Tucson's Andrew Uresti and St. Paul's Ronald Hannan (who the Loons have been trying to trade for nearly 2 years now!), none have put up such impressive overall numbers as Kadin Reynolds has, and when his career winds down several years from now, expect him to be considered the greatest hitter the ABA has ever seen. That is, until one of the next generation of young ABA sluggers steps up a notch and decides that he will be the greatest hitter the ABA has ever seen. Although there are several young hitting stars in the league now (including a glut of young catching talent) there are three players that are setting themselves apart from the pack and are ones to watch: Buffalo's C Oscar Verden, Nashville's 2B Robert Williams, and Tucson's 1B/RF Robert Bibbins. *** ALL STATS CURRENT AS OF JUNE 24th, 1992 Kadin Reynolds - http://www.aba.ootp-leagues.com/LeagueSite/p929.html ABA Leaguesite - http://www.aba.ootp-leagues.com/ The ABA is a 24-team fictional league originally created by Mark Cooley and Bob Monroe. The ABA began play in 1987, and is currently in the middle of it's 6th simulated season. Before the 1992 season, Joe Allen and myself took over the commish duties (ok, really, Joe does just about everything, I'm just his sidekick), and the ABA is just as strong as ever. Although owner turnover is rare, feel free to e-mail Joe or myself to inquire about being put on the waiting list. We are also always looking for anyone who wants to participate in the league by contributing articles, rants, or diatribes, and becoming a part of our little baseball universe is also a very good way to move up to the top of said waiting list. Come by and join us in the fun.

Nice article. But, with lack of playoff succes, he sounds more like Ernie Banks.

![]() ...because the article isn't utter drivel, that is why. Fort Worth!? That isn't a baseball town... ...and neither will St. Louis be once the Hawks are finished dicking around

Newsflash:
Babe Ruth is now on the block. And yes, there is a team in Raleigh, not a very good one, but there is one. |
