This weirdly, and pleasantly, turned into a kind of "get to know the community" thread.

I'm 25 and single, like the OP, but I'm a third year medical student and the only protection of my time is they can't make us work more than 80 hours a week. You really do have to sacrifice something else to make time for OOTP and I don't make that decision every time, but occasionally it's well worth it.

I work about 55 hour weeks and have cut it back to around 48 recently. I don't have time for any games during the workweek and If I had kids I would have no time at all for any sort of games. We need to enjoy it while we can.

If you have no other games to compete with, you should still have plenty of time.

I have a full time job, and 3 kids. I only work 5 days a week, the kids are in bed at 8, the wife by 9:30; that gives me an hour each night. If I have a weekday off, the kids are at school, and the wife at work; gives me 8 more hours (if I decide to dedicate that much time). Truth is, I have about 12 hours per week totally to myself; I don't spend nearly all of that on games, but imagine if I had to divide that time between 3 or 4 games, as well as other hobbies.

I have a full time job but I work nights, so I'm up late anyway....I work from 2-10pm and play OOTP when I come home from work normally. I'm up until around 4am most nights anyway so why not?? I'm not married and no kids either so it's easier for me to do this.

Same here. If I was married and/or had kids there's no way I could do everything I do with the roster and beta team unless Markus was to hire me and I could quit my regular job. That's not even including the actual playing of the game, which I don't always have time for now...

I'm married with a new-born and a full-time job (soon to be stay-at-home dad). Before I would play 2 hours a night and all weekend.. now it's every other weeknight for about 45 minutes to an hour and maybe a few hours on the weekend. The benefit is that you can play this game while away from it (deciding on next years pitching rotation, thinking of your organisational depth a second base, etc). On a good night - I can play out a series (3 games).. on a bad night I never get around to seeing my Manager screen. I still fall asleep thinking about my rookies, and wake-up in the morning thinking about my line-up changes. The game is crack.

If marriage was baseball, I was 0-2 and hit a HR on the next pitch

I only work temp jobs at the moment, my girl's in the Navy now, 800 miles away, and I STILL can't find the time to actually play the games, just sim about 95% of 'em. I honestly don't see how people do it.

Of course, my OCD tendency to have/make actual uniforms, logos, etc. and have real rosters for historical teams might have something to do with that.

I'm late 30s with 3 kids under 6 and work full time. Honestly, I find a lot less time than I used to. But you work it in when you have the chance. Gaming is my wind down time, generally a few hours when the house is quiet. Part of the reason I don't do nearly as much modding as I used to.

You will find time. I'm married with 2 little ones and I still manage to play a lot. I do spend a lot less time on other things like tv and ps4. OOTP has also replaced fantasy baseball for me.

The don't retire as much at 60 as much anymore, either. You don't do that young guy (OP) a service mouthing macho platitudes like this.

However, this is also true. After taking care of business, there's always some time for fun . . . unless you are a maniac. Business first, though, then fun. You don't want to be one of those 34-year-old parents' basement-living dudes, now do you?

True. Life can be that way sometimes, especially if you don't take care of what is important. Telling somebody that it's OK to party all the time, or whatever those guys were advocating, is not right. Life can be a lot of fun and games as long as one realizes that it's not all fun and games.

OP seemed to want to know how we balance playing OOTPB (and presumably other pursuits of happiness) with the requirements of life. It can be done; some people (children, retired folks) have more time for playing and some less (working folks) but we all enjoy playing OOTPB to some extent. As others have said, make time for it! You'll be glad you did.

But telling OP "Become your own boss. Then do whatever the Hell you want" and "when you turn 40 you will realize that the Business of Life is a bunch of crap. At that point, you will realize that you can play video games as much as you like" is nonsense and teaches him nothing. He wanted sound advice and I gave him some. It's the father in me.

I'm 28 at been working full time for seven years now. As much fun as gaming is, earning your own money and not being a burden to society comes first. I have always been gaming excessively, and have not stopped after starting to work. OOTP combines especially well with watching TV (although I can't stand TV anymore) or a baseball game. Or eating.

Most of the time I have no trouble to play out a week's worth of games in OOTP (something around three hours) in the evening.

Then again, though, I don't find joy in anything else, I don't read books, I don't have pets, and I don't have any friends, and I'm a hideous, ugly little troll that nobody could ever fall in love with, not even if I had any money.

So, well, yeah. Maybe you should post all your other interests and a few pictures of you so we can better gauge whether you should call a hit-and-run on marriage or rather play it safe and start your own fictional dynasty in OOTP.

If I wasn't doing the work, it would go to one or more large corporations, who would charge more to do it while doing it not quite as well. If you prefer a world of only large corporations, in which I "knew my place" and worked for one, that's fine. But I don't.

There is an alternative in America (and in Germany, hello Markus) to being an employee. Too few people realize that.
