So I have a soon-to-be 31-year-old, who is a perennial All-Star, whose contract is expiring at season's end. He is asking for a 10-year contract for $27 million each year. Is this unheard of?

Plus, it shouldn't be too difficult to lower those demands and get a more reasonable offer.

In OOTP as IRL never give out a 10 year deal.

Thing is I accidentally clicked "offer minor league extension" a few weeks back and he refused to talk with me. Now he's finally willing to talk to me, I'm afraid that if I don't meet his demands I'll piss him off again. What a situation.

You just need to piss him off. No player older than 30 should get a contract like the one he is asking for. I would let him go. Been burnt a few times giving my 32 year old player a 7 year contract extension only to see him crash and burn after 3 or 4 years. The longest extension I now give is 7 years with players 27 year old or younger. |

You'll only get a comp pick if you offer arbitration. It's no longer based on stats.

Well it really depends on the stats he's putting up vs the salary he earns now. If he's still All-Star level give him a 5 year minimum, 7 year max extension for 20mm/year and see if he bites. If not, let him sign somewhere else and get a draft pick in return.

Again, incorrect. Yes, OOTP offers the option to use the pre-2012 free agent rules (Type A and Type B). However, default settings use the current CBA, which uses a uniform qualifying offer, which is, admittedly, not calculated the same way as in real life (it's higher in OOTP). However, the point remains that all free agents offered arbitration are comp-eligible. Not sure what part of this you're saying is not true for OOTP.

What I see is...
Salary Arbitration Status - Not eligible, free agent after contract expires! Free Agent Type after Season - No Compensation |

If you are a bit of a gambler, I propose two ways of dealing with this. (if one doesn't work, the second will not be available, so choose wisely)
1) offer a lower contract; if his 10/270 deal is progressive, offer him just the salary in the first year. Without stats (perennial all star is a subjective term) I really couldn't say how much he is worth. 2) This one will probably work, but not if you piss him off. Let him file for free agency. Offer him 80% of what he is asking (which will most likely be 80% of what he's asking now). The problem with this, is you may wind up in a bidding war that lasts the entire offseason; to which you need an exit strategy. If he signs by the winter meetings however, you will likely get a bargain, and boost your fan interest (meaning more money next season)

Thanks for all the help and advice everybody. Here is what ended up happening:
He eventually accepted my contract offer, which was $175 million over 7 years, which works out to an average of $25 million. I made the offer a few real-time days ago, so I have forgot some of the details, one of them being the buyout amount. |
