Good argument for the mercy rule
Granted, this was in an 1872 game, where lots of runs and errors are to be expected. But still ...
Poor Harold Ochterlony committed 13 of New York's 31 errors, but he had an excuse: he was a catcher without any rating at short playing that position, presumably because of injuries. He ended up playing four games at shortstop during the season and registered 29 errors in 35 total chances for a fielding average of .171 - quite possibly the worst fielding average ever recorded in human history. It was left to outfielder Bill Penniman to pitch the final one-and-two-thirds innings. Brooklyn, meanwhile, had 31 hits, only three of which were for extra bases, and ten walks. Brooklyn's wily manager lifted his starting pitcher for a pinch-hitter in the seventh when his team was only leading 26-13 (they proceeded to score ten runs with two outs in that inning). I wonder if any of the 837 New York fans were still in the ballpark when the game ended over four hours after the first pitch. If I were them, I would have demanded my quarter back. |

I like the stats of Chisolm, the Brooklyn catcher: 0 for 7 but scored 6 times.

Mr. Cassel is probably not terribly happy with his defense behind him.

That's making the most of your hits and opponents errors, 51 runs on 31 hits n 31 errors.

I think the most telling stat is a 9 inning game that takes 4 hours and 21 minutes
![]() How many of those 837 people were still there at the end?

Cassel gives up 21 runs in 4 innings, but none of them were earned. That's almost impossible to believe. I guess this is another reason why I've never bothered to play seasons before 1901.

I'm not sure which is more impressive. The amount of runs scored itself, or the fact that none of the 51 runs were homers.
You must be using some adjustment for the dead ball era I take it?

Tacoma beat Colorado Springs 25-6 back on May 29th of this year in a Pacific Coast League game. Here's the box score.

I was messing with my league totals modifiers one time with a test league. I wanted to adjust hits % from .950 down to .900, only I accidently put 9.000.
I simmed a week and looked at the box-scores they were all like 52 - 46 or 48 - 31 scores. That was when I realized the mistake. Made me laugh ![]() Shoulda seen the record book for 6 hits in a game. Last edited by Bluenoser; 06-14-2013 at 01:59 PM. |
