Some Crazy Trades in July !!!

July 19th 2013

I just got Felix Hernandez and Stephen Strasburg to join the Pirates

.... both for a load of prospects - albeit some who might reach a potential of late 60s/early 70s.
None of the guys I lost were even in my active roster .... but would have been once the roster expansion kicked in.

Seattle are currently 11.5 games behind Texas in the AL Western, and 6.5 off a wild card spot.
Washington are 4.5 behind Atlanta in the NL Eastern, and only .5 off the wild card.
(Pittsburgh are leading the NL Central by 4 games)

Should I be surprised at how "easy" it was to acquire these 2 monsters ?
In my experience normally you have give up a lot more ...

I know that once arbritation kicks in I'll probably have to trade them both plus my other guys

C - J Montero/Mesoraco
1B - Hosmer
2B - Ackley
3B - Sandoval
SS - Gordon
LF - Trout/B Belt
CF - Harper
RF - Stanton
DH - Belt/B Allen/Carp

Rotation

Strasburg
Hernandez
Bumgarner
B Anderson
Sale

Think my budget of $85M will be severly tested.

Wow, nice! I think the trading is a little cumbersome in ioop. If a team makes a counter suggestion, you should be able to add the player without going through the roster and then the trading block.

Oh well, anyways it looks like you have a good rotation!

I think the pendulum has swung a bit too far for the trading. In previous versions, you could pick up stud 5* prospects for nothing more than a few decent MRs, now you can't pry prospects out without multiple 4-5* starters. The AI went from severely undervaluing prospects to overvaluing them. Somewhere in the middle would be perfect I think. Or have it based more on the team's finances and attitude toward building. That element seems to be a bit lacking in the decision process.

I think some self-restraint is always prudent when trading if you are aiming to keep things "realistic". No matter how the programmer sets up the trading AI, you will always be able to find ways to exploit it.

I generally follow a couple of 'rules' when it comes to trading (note this is through '12...haven't played '13 enough yet):

1) I never allow myself to do a 3 for 1 deal (where I am sending the 3 for 1 star). I've found it too easy to acquire talent with the quanitity for quality mantra which sees the computer team getting absolutely ripped off thinking three mediocre talents = a single superstar.

2) I try to let the CPU engage all the trades. Generally I won't actively seek out trade partners. I let them come to me...once they let me know there is a player on my roster they are interested in, I let myself expand the deal to suit my needs but I always keep the guy the computer targeted in the deal.

3) I have a couple exceptions to rule 2...if a player is on the trade block, I am free to negotiate for them. And it one of my players is in the last year of their contract and don't seem re-signable, I will actively look to deal them.

I find this results in a more challenging game in developing and keeping together a franchise.
