Random Debut Question...Help!
Question about the Random Debut option:
I am starting my 1939 Dynasty without including any history before 1939. I am using the actual teams from 1939 along with actual rosters from 1939. However, I am using the random debut feature for all new players coming into the league. I am not having a draft. rather the players will go to their original teams. Here is my question/scenario: Say for 1940 the following players enter the league: Chipper Jones. Cal Ripken and Andre Dawson Would Cal Ripken go the St. Louis Browns?(since they are the original Orioles) or would he just go into the free agent pool? Would Chipper join the Boston Braves? Would Andre Dawson head into the free agent pool since there is no equivalent franchise for the Expos in 1940? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. I am really excited about the random debut feature but I am just curious about some of the specifics of how it works |

Good Question
Try this...turn off auto save, remove yourself as manager, and auto play a season or two and see what happens. Am interested in your results.

There is a setting which makes historical rookies go to the correct team in the correct years, but if you do random debut, it's the same as a regular draft full of generic players. For example, my Mariners franchise drafted C.C. Sabbathia in 1978 and Ichiro debuted the next year for Detroit.

It appears that it's completely random, even if you turn off the draft and tell the game to import historical rookies to their real life teams. I don't think the option to import players to their real life teams applies if random debut is turned on. OOTP simply ignores that setting. If you turn the draft off with random debut, the historical players are simply randomly assigned to various clubs.
This should probably be addressed with an additional option to play random debut with all players going to their real life teams, including an initial import and dispersal of players based on historical team IDs. But this would probably require additional coding since the import couldn't really be random. It would have to import enough players to fill out rosters. Then you have the issue of what the game can do once it has run out of players, particularly for newer expansion franchises from 1961 onward. For example, if you started a game in 1993 with random debut turned on, the Florida Marlins are going to run out of players to import after 20 years. So maybe this option can't really be offered. The only way around it would be to allow fictional players to be used if real players run out, but most people probably don't want that. Last edited by Charlie Hough; 05-10-2012 at 05:10 PM. |

For example, say I started in 1939 and kept the original 16 teams...no expansion or relocation. Instead of random debuts I had players debut in the years they were supposed to with no draft but instead assigned to their real teams.
Would Chipper Jones debut with the Boston Braves or just be dumped into the free agent pool since there will be no Atlanta Braves? |
