Division Alignment Question
I am thinking of setting a new league in OOTP 12. For geographical and population density reasons, I would end up having 8 divisions, 5 in the west and 3 in the east. Of course, the number of divisions are even for the league but odd for the sub-leagues.
Would the OOTP playoff set-up allow for this by pairing up playoff teams from different sub-leagues? Or, would I have to use wildcard teams to create an even number of playoff teams for each sub-league?

You'd have to use wild cards. The game will not let you match up teams from different subleagues until the championship round. At least not yet.

This.. so you would need 5 division winners + 3 wild cards for one league, 3 division winners + 5 wild cards (or 3 second place + 2 wild cards, if you so prefer) for the other league.

I was thinking one wild card for each league (5+1 for one league and 3+1 for the other). That would work, right?

You could actually accomplish what you're trying to do by some creative scheduling. Set up a single league with eight divisions, but arrange the schedule so that the teams in the five western divisions play only each other and the teams in the three eastern divisions play only each other. At the end of the season, the game will match up the division winners against each other.
Of course, the game will consider this setup to constitute a single league rather than two sub-leagues. You should, then, name the divisions to reflect the fact that they're in separate leagues (so, e.g., name it "Eastern League - Atlantic Division" instead of just "Atlantic Division") and name the "league" something generic, like "The Major Leagues." And you'd need to create the schedule yourself -- the game won't generate a schedule that, in effect, splits a league in two. That shouldn't be too difficult if you know what you're doing. |
