Why is this is save?
What am I overlooking here, if anything? Pittman came into the game in the 7th inning and we were winning 15-3, so I don't think he should be credited with a save?

If you pitch 3 innings, you finish the game, and your team wins, that's a save.

However, I don't think I've ever seen that "effective" thing invoked, but how many 3-inning saves happen these days in the first place? |

The effective part of that rule was removed a few years ago.

I just looked at the MLB website and the 2011 rules and the word effectively is removed.

So it is! Nice of MLB to have inconsistent rule information out there.

We learn something new everyday
![]() I always thought the 3 inning rule was automatic. Surprised to learn it wasn't the case before 2011... |

either way. i think 3 innings 0H, 0BB, 5K and 0ER is pretty effective.

There was a save in that 30-3 game a couple years ago between... uhh... Texas and Baltimore, maybe?

I agree the save stat is horrible and has ruined the way managers use their bullpens in real life(and ootp thanks to a players mood if they aren't the "closer") You best reliever should be used in the spot of the game where the game is on the line and they should get a save for it.
If it's 6-3 with the bases loaded in the 7th and a guy comes in and gets a double play and a k to keep the score 6-3, then someone pitches the 8th and the closer pitches the 9th and you win 6-3. Does the closer really deserve the Save? They made the hold stat thinking it would fix this, but it seems they give a hold to every reliever who pitchers in a win, so it doesn't hold much weight to me. |

(I just realized this was a big thread hijack, so I deleted it here and gave it its own thread.)
