Online leagues in OOTP12 - what does this mean?

I just got an email about the OOTP12 features, and I found the details about the new online league features interesting. Does anyone know what this means? Does this mean OOTP is hosting the league files? or simply that they've enhanced online leagues for existing leagues?

------------------------------------
Online Leagues

We're proud to support Official OOTP Online Leagues with a full-featured interface inside OOTP 12. With just one click, you can join a team, and creating a league is just as easy. Commissioners can make their leagues public and advertise open teams, with the ability to accept or deny requests from would-be GMs.

Official OOTP Online Leagues offer several key advantages:

League files are patches rather than full-size files, saving plenty of up- and download time.
Reports can be saved in MySQL databases, increasing their upload speed.
Forget about FTP: team data exports and imports work through the database. That results in improved compatibility and security for the league web site server.
An export tracker.
The promise of more great features to come, including online drafts and trades.

I'm not clear on it all myself, but it sounds like leagues that opt to be on this system get advantages in downloading and uploading files which in essence sounds like OOTP will be "hosting" at least the sim update files. Will they host the rest of your site? Doubt it.

The one thing I do know is that they'll be putting the IOLD or at least something like it right into the game which will hopefully make it more used and more useful.

EDIT: Took out some speculation.

I was gonna say the same thing as kq76. However, I'll see if I can draw some further clarification out of Markus or Andreas...

EDIT: In the meantime, I'll take a guess at what it means. And this is only a GUESS!!: OOTP Dev will indeed host your league files, but that is only because they will no longer be files, as in 70 to 100 MB beasts that we see today. They will simply be database entries that no longer have to contain the entire set of .dats and other files. With each sim, the commish will update his league in the Official OOTP Online database with a click or two. Then his league members can update their games in the same way. Instead of connecting to a site, downloading an archive, unpacking and loading, there will only be loading. That loading will be only the loading of a small amount of database entries that were made when the commissioner updated his league in the database. So the answer would be "yes". OOTP will host your league data(not files).

On the other hand, OOTP will not host your league reports(nor your website or forums as kq76 said above). But will be making reports easy to send to a mySQL database, meaning no more generating files, archiving and uploading. If you have access to creating these databases, you should be able to create one for your reports, then place a few php files where you used to put reports(probably just a few MB's worth) and those php files work dynamically to display the html reports that are housed in your mySQL database.

Again, this is just a guess!

Do we know if an OOTP 10 league will be transferable to OOTP 12 yet?

Yep, that's been the standard practice thus far. Invariably, they have to change enough of the data structure each year that being completely backwards compatible (beyond the previous version) is not feasible.

dola,

If kq and fidel's conjecture is on the mark, this will be a GREAT upgrade for online leagues. Worth the price of admission by itself. I hope it is as they say (which makes perfect sense to me).

I hope the defunct leagues are cleaned out of the IOLD if, in fact, it is incorporated into the game.

If this is true, then I don't understand why OOTP would want to host these databases unless they plan to charge for this feature. Surely, there should be a way to have the game connect to a database located somewhere other than OOTP's servers.

I was assuming if this truly is a hosted database, the web front end being dynamic would likely be on the same hosted server. If that was not the case, then I'm not sure how I feel about unencrypted mysql queries being sent over the internet. Considering the past issues commissioners had with hackers if they didn't follow proper security, this would likely open a new can of worms I think.

Very good points, Frank and Alan! It has crossed my mind more than once whether this is a good idea or not(and I'm not even entire sure what Andreas has in mind!). I mean imagine the uproar if anything goes wrong and multiple online leagues are lost due to any number of reasons.

Well, I'm hoping that one of the big dogs will come along soon and shed some light on this.

I'd think the commish would have the latest file on his machine as well since he'd have to 'upload' it to the OOTP server after the last sim. If they're just housing league 'patches', then I think this will work.

If its going to be a 'pay' option, I think it fails miserably.

Agreed if it is a monthly fee type thing. If it is $25/yr or something nominal, then that might be OK.

I think having to buy a new game every year already makes it a "pay" thing.

but the additions sound great from a commish end, not having to wait forever to upload reports, and being able to recruit/find/sign up gms within the game will be a great feature to have.

I was posing the same questions in my online league. With the game's release so close, I was hoping there would be some developer insight on this potentially new system and service.
