He also allowed 17 homeruns on the year. -Gloucester has signed 37 year old 1B Jonathan Bell to a 2 year extention worth $1.17 million a year. Last season, Bell hit .300 with 21 homeruns and 71 RBI. He also contributed 6 triples and 25 doubles, while stealing 8 bases. -The Marblehead Magicians have signed C David Ashley away from the Portsmouth Clippers to a 3 year deal this week. The deal will see the 33 year old Ashley make $461,000 a year for each of the next three seasons. January/February News and Notes
-The Marblehead Magicians have made a couple moves to solidify their bullpen, first signing reliever Scott Hill have agreed on a two year deal that sees Hill paid $2.5 million over the life of the contract. Last year for Exeter, Hill was 7-3 with a 3.96 ERA. He pitched in 43 games, covering 64 1/3 innings. He gave up 62 hits and 17 walks while striking out 41 and allowing just two homeruns. They also brought in Charles Saunders from the Portsmouth Clippers on a three year contract worth $1.1 million. Last season for the Clippers, Saunders was 6-4 with a 3.31 ERA. He pitched 68 innings, giving up 75 hits, while striking out 38 and walking 23. -On top of their bullpen signings, the Magicians also signed SS Jacob Davis to a two year contract worth $2.85 million. Last year for Portland, Davis hit .253 with 13 homeruns and 37 RBI. He appeared in 99 games, coming to bat 362 times, picking up 29 doubles and 1 triple amongst his 92 hits. -The Nashua Titans have signed SS Felix Rivera to a two year, $3 million dollar contract. Rivera hit .297 with 11 homeruns and 47 RBI a year ago for the Dover Green Wave. THe 35 year old Rivera also hit 27 doubles and scored 59 runs. -The Bangor Crusaders have signed P Pedro Rangel away from the Salem Witches to a two year deal worth just over $2.1 million per year. Last year in the Witches surprising run, Rangel was 9-13 with a 3.88 ERA. He started 30 games for Salem, pitching 199 2/3 innings, giving up 201 hits and walking 46 while striking out 137. -The Crusaders have also signed former Newmarket Mule reliever Al Foster to a two year contract worth $550,000 per year. Last season, after being acquired by the Mules from Gloucester, Foster was 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA. He appeared in 44 games total, allowing 69 hits in 65 innings pitched with 10 walks and 52 strikeouts. He was also bothered by the long ball, giving up 10 homeruns. -The Durham Bobcats have signed closer Harry Behan to a 1 year 1.594 million dollar deal. Last year for Manchester, Behan was 0-2 with a 2.36 ERA. He pitched in 38 games, covering 45 2/3 innings, allowing just 24 hits and 13 walks, while striking out 40 and saving eight games for the Lancers. -The Marblehead Magicians continue to make changes this offseason as they sign 3B Sergio Rosas to a three year contract worth $2,874,000. A year ago for Salem, Rosas hit .269 with 11 HR and 36 RBI. Known more for his glove than his bat, Rosas played all four infield positions last year, committing just two total errors in 406 chances. -The big signing of the offseason goes to the Dover Green Wave, albiet a little puzzling as they sign 1B Marcos Diaz away from the Exeter Blue Hawks to a 3 year, $12 million dollar contract. Last year for Exeter, Diaz hit .321 with 37 homeruns and 94 RBI. He added 25 doubles and 82 runs scored. The question is where he will play as Dover already has reigning HR champ and Gold Glove winner Patrick Gilbert manning the first base bag. -Big trade out of Newmarket this week as the Mules send 33 year old OF Mario Decos to the Bangor Crusaders in exchange for P Jesus Flores. Last year, Decos put up a line of .287 with 26 homeruns and 70 RBI. He appeared in 98 games, picking up 101 hits for Newmarket, but was set to lose his starting job to young Sergio Hernandez. Coming back to the Mules is the 28 year old Flores, who a year ago, was 12-12 with a 3.54 ERA. He started 30 games a year ago, pitching 213 1/3 innings. He gave up just 191 hits and 58 walks while striking out 176. He does have a bit of a problem with the longball as he surrendered 23 homeruns. |

Spring Training News and Notes:
-There were a few major injuries during Spring Training this year, including two career enders. First, 36 year old P Dave Johnstone of the Nashua Titans suffered a torn elbow ligament and isn't expected to recover. He hit .271 with 4 HR and 30 RBI a year ago in 269 AB's. Next Durham Bobcats P Jaime Serna's career also came to an abrupt end as he suffered major damage to his shoulder and elbow and while he could be back in approximately 24 months, noone is expecting it. Last year, Serna was 5-4 with a 4.73 ERA in 11 starts for the Bobcats. -Dan Zimmerman of the Newmarket Mules will be out until July at the earliest as it was discovered he had bone chips in his pitching elbow. Zimmerman was 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA, but improved drastically in the 2nd half of the year, winning the Pitcher of the Month award in July. -P Andy Olson of the Dover Green Wave will miss the season after tearing his triceps muscle clear off the bone in a game this week. Last year, Olson was 6-2 with a 3.78 ERA for the World Champions. He threw 52 1/3 innings, striking out 59. Complete Team Spring Training Batting Stats-
Surprises: C Brad Ford .286 3 HR 9 RBI- Ford was brought in to replace the departed Todd Lewis, and responded nicely. A year ago, Ford was playing in AAA, where he received only 91 AB's. We hope he can provide some pop off the bench, butis mostly here for his glovework. SS Kent Rogers .250 2 HR 11 RBI- Another under the radar free agent signing. Rogers was brought in to replace Al Allen, and he ended up 2nd on the team in RBI during the Spring. He needs some work with the glove however, as he committed 7 total errors this spring, five at 2B and two at short. Jesus Flores 2-0 1.35 ERA- Flores was everything we hoped he be. In five starts, he pitched 20 innings, and gave up 20 hits and just four walks with 21 strikeouts. Wallace Harrison 1-0 1.69 4 starts- Considering we picked up him for a 34 year old minor league OF, we are thrilled with his performance. The lack of strikeouts, (only 5 in 16 innings) is a tad concerning though. Jose Barron 2-2 2.10 12 appearances- Barron's transition to the bullpen was fantastic. He struck out 35 in 30 innings and gives us a long man to bridge the gap between the starters and Fernando Garcia and John Coury. Disappointments: Allan Fox .167 1 HR 3 RBI- Not good production for our highest paid player ($6.3 million) Alberto Flores .216 1 HR 7 RBI- After finishing 4th in the NL in batting last year, this isn't what we were hoping for. Jesus Guardado 0-3 6.75- Not a good spring at all for our Ace. Allowed opponents to hit .311 against him, although he did just allow 2 homeruns. Pablo Contreras 0-0 8.27 12 appearances- Not what we were looking for in his attempt to return from season ending surgery a year ago. 29 baserunners in 16 innings isn't going to cut it, even as the last man in the pen. Leading off the 2009 campaign for the Mules is four games at home against the Augusta Moose followed by a four game set in Portland against the Bulldogs! |

Last year, Bautista was 8-15 with a 5.17 ERA in 31 starts, and he has struggled even more this year, posting a 0-2 8.49 line in two starts. He has pitched 11 innings, giving up 19 hits, including six homeruns. He does however have a 7/0 K/BB ratio. -Augusta closer Anastacio Martinez will miss the rest of the season after rupturing a disc in his back throwing a pitch against the Green Wave of Dover. A year ago, Martinez was 6-2 with a 1.37 ERA. He pitched in 35 games, saving 14, throwing 46 innings, allowing 40 hits and striking out 29. I can tell you're from the North Shore as well, given the fact the Massachusetts division is all from there...but where's the love for Beverly? Let's see the Panthers get expanded into the league!

I lived in Newmarket until I was about 14 or 15, until I moved to Peabody through High School. Went back to New Hampshire for college (Go Wildcats!!), but currently I live in Chicago. As far as expansion goes, I want to give the league 3 or 4 years to get settled and established, and I will probably add 2-4 teams at the end of year four. Thanks for reading!

Kobes on the year is hitting .293 with 15 doubles, nine homeruns and 31 RBI for the Tanners and will move into the #2 spot in the lineup for Newmarket. A year ago, Kobes hit .293 with 21 homeruns and 72 RBI to go along with 36 doubles for Peabody. Heading to Peabody will be Barron who pitched well in a swing role for Newmarket, going 2-1 with a 4.60 ERA. He had appeared in 10 games, pitching 31 1/3 innings, giving up 34 hits, while walking nine and striking out 43. Bailey had appeared in limited games this year. He had pitched five games, going six innings, giving up nine hits and striking out seven. -Scott Gardner of the Salem Witches suffered his second season ending injury in as many years this week, when he tore a muscle in his shoulder and will need 6-7 months to recover. Thusfar on the year, Gardner was hitting .311 with 2 homeruns and 23 RBI. He appeared in just 63 games a year ago, hitting .358 with 22 HR and 44 RBI before seeing his season come to an end due to a broken foot. -Harry Dykstra and the Orono Riot agreed on a one year extention that will pay the closer $487,000 next year. So far on the season, Dykstra is 2-1 with a 1.65 ERA. He has appeared in 18 games, throwing 17 innings, allowing 17 hits and five walks while striking out 19 and saving nine games. Because I forgot to post stas, standings and leaders, I will do that next. Afterwards, the Mules head out back on the road for four games up north against the Orono Riot, followed by four more in Portland against the Bulldogs. |
