Franchise Legends Player Claim: Tug McGraw
First, thanks to all of you who responded to the first four of these I posted yesterday. It's been interesting seeing the results so far.
Second, don't be thrown by the number of ex-Mets or ex-Yankees I've asked about first (including this one). There will be many guys not affiliated with either I'll ask about (as well as many guys who played further ago than 1980...this set will have players from the early 1900s, even some from the 1800s.) With that said, we move on to what I feel is a very tough call. Tug McGraw The debate: Mets vs Phillies The numbers Tenure: Mets 1965-1974, Phillies 1975-1984 WARP 3: Mets 30.4 vs Phillies 29.9 Championships: Won World Series with Mets in 1969, Phillies in 1980 All-Star: 1 appearance for each team (Mets in '72, Phillies in '75) Awards: 5th place in Cy Young voting for Phillies in 1980 Top 5 Seasons (based on WARP3): 7.5 (M), 7.4 (M), 6.7 (P), 4.7 (P), 4.2 (1 year with each team) Discuss, and thanks again for participating. It really is a help (as I'm surely open to being told my opinion is stupid...marriage does that to you )

Wow, tough call. I guess the fact that he was on the mound to clinch the Philly title swings me that way.

His role in the Phillies' first championship vs his role in the Mets' first championship. I may not have a tougher call than McGraw in this whole project.
Thanks for the replies. |

By comparison, he was in nine games for the Phillies in the 1980 NLCS/WS, including nailing down four saves, two in the World Series against Kansas City. If you want a case for the Mets, you'd look at '73 with the "You Gotta' Believe" stuff... ...but I don't think that trumps his stay in Philly.

Probably not enough people remember he was a Met, I know I don't. Yes, I always knew he was once a Met, but that was before my time. To me he was a Phillie.

Wow. I totally think of him as a Met and was only vaguely aware that he played with the Phillies (it's a little before my time). But of course I'm a Mets fan.

When I was little and first getting interested in baseball he was a Phillie (then again so was Pete Rose
) Right now, I'd have to say it was a tie.
