Injury woes

My team has recently sustained a couple of gruesome injuries and I have a few questions. I lost my starting 3B in the post season to a fractured skull (some A-hole hit him in the face with a pitch). 8-9 month recovery period. At the beginning of my next season, my starting first baseman ruptured his achilles tendon while running the bases (steroids anyone?) and he too is on the shelf for 8-9 months.
These injuries hurt for multiple reasons. Firstly, they are two of my best players. But I can deal with that, injuries do happen. The thing that I am most concerned about is the fact that they both have multi-year, huge contracts left (4x9 million for the 3B, 3x18million for the 1B) and i am noticing a scary trend. According to my scouts, my 3B has been downgraded from a 4.5/5 star player, to a 1 star during his 6 months of rehab. Is this normal for a long injury? Is there a chance he will get back to his regular playing ability? Or am i stuck with a utility infielder with an albatross of a contract for four more years? He is 30 years old.

Also, what do you think the odds are that my first baseman will suffer from a similar type of ratings free fall? He is 29 years old.

Another question I have is in regards to rehab. These guys are well beyond having option years. Is it possible to send them to triple A for some rehab? Or will they refuse demotion? And do they have to clear waivers in order to be sent to triple A? What has worked for you in the past?

thanks for any help,

It does seem to be wildly unpredictable how injuries will affect ratings. Some players never seem to recover, while others are completely unaffected. I've often seen players go from 5 stars to one, and then they somtimes seem to recapture at least half of their former ability, rising to perhaps 3 stars. If the ratings drop drastically, it's almost certain the player will not recover fully, though. Still, others don't lose a thing. Age seems to play a role- younger players seem to be less seriously affected by injury than older players. I haven't done any serious analysis here- this is really wild speculation- and what I've seen may only be a result of small sample size.

As far as I know, there is no reason to send players on rehab assignments in OOTP, except that it might eliminate 'rust' (there is a hidden 'rust' rating in OOTP, which has a small effect on performance). After starting three consecutive games (or so), rust should not be a factor anyway, so I don't think you should bother concerning yourself with rehab assignements, which aren't properly implemented in the game in any case.

Gruesome, is the spelling, incidentally.
