MLB Gameday Interface
Has anyone seen the MLB Gameday screen from MLB.com? This thing is awesome. You've got pitch locations, box scores, fielders positions, pitch speeds and angles, other game scores, play by play or pitch by pitch, all the other stats you want, and the screen isn't even very big. I'm a huge fan of this.
I'm not suggesting OOTP 2008 completely rip this off, but there are ideas there to be mined. I happen to like the SION Webcast screen for simming games, but it could always be improved. You guys should definitely check out the MLB Gameday screens during a game. Awesome stuff. |

I think it's way too busy personally. I preferred the old style

I think the new version is pretty cool, although for some reason it causes my laptops fan to start up. Oddly enough ootp doesnt do it.

Too busy just compared to the old style, or too busy compared to SION webcast screen? SION seems much more busy to me, and somehow contains less information. Or maybe just different information.
I especially like the pitch location to previous batters for pitchers or previous ABs for hitters feature. Top notch. |

Apparently, there are large numbers of people who hate the new Gameday. Its an extremely busy/cramped layout, and apparently its a resource hog.

Neither of those things would be an issue for a future text sim baseball game. |

Considering I have a part time job with mlb.com, I would love to say Gameday is the best thing ever, but I can't. I too like the old version. The new version does seem a little busy. The box score and field seem the same, but the way the batter and pitch by pitch info is shown seems very cartoon like. It was much simpler before. One thing I do like though is that you can go back and see pitch locations for previous at bats. I'm pretty sure you couldn't do that before. I'm guessing they changed everything in anticipation of having the pitch trajectory system (this is already installed in some stadiums, but not all - most if not all should have them at some point this season).
Another thing I don't like is if you're looking back at previous at bats and there's a mid at bat event (stolen base, wild pitch, etc.), you can't tell which pitch it occurred on. The order it's put in makes it look like it happened before the current batter was at the plate (you'd have to look at it to see what I'm talking about). I did e-mail my supervisor about this. I haven't heard back about it. I'm not sure if it's intended this way or if it's a glitch. By the way, in case you didn't notice, you can shrink the field and make that pitch by pitch window bigger by clicking on the minus sign above the field or on the plus sign where it says Game Summary. I like to do this because that window is way too small to follow what's happened recently. In case you're wondering what I do for mlb.com, I'm actually one of the people who enters the data for Gameday during the game for the Phillies home games. I have nothing to do with how Gameday presents the data, I just enter the data, ..., every pitch, pitch location (until they install the pitch trajectory system for Citizen's Bank Park), location of the ball put in play, what happened on each play, subs and double checking the box score with the Official Scorer after games. This is my first year doing it so I've only done 3 games so far, with 2 of them being the exhibition games against Boston. It's a very cool job, but can be stressful. Despite baseball being considered a slow game, keeping up is not always easy. Especially in spring training games and suddenly there are 5 subs at once with guys changing positions and at the same time you find out a guy that was taken out of the game is up to bat (this actually happened in the first exhibition game I did, the PR guy saw the backup catcher warming up the pitcher while Varitek was putting on his equipment and thought it was a sub and announced it, people in the dugout do not always call up to the pressbox with subs, someone in the press box is watching for them - I also have to watch out for them in case the PR guy misses them). That part of the game was crazy for me trying to catch up. At least since it was my first live game there was another guy helping out teaching me stuff. Not sure I would have gotten through it if I was there by myself.Hope you have fun enjoying Gameday. Hopefully they'll make more improvements as the season goes on (for the better). Not sure if I have any pull getting them to change the presentation at all though. I've emailed a few things here and there, but haven't gotten any feedback. |

I'm really surprised people would see this screen as busy. Maybe because the window is smaller. But there's even room enough for an ad in the lower right corner. You take that out and there's even more room.
Looking at this screen to me is much less busy than the SION webcast. Oh, well, guess I'm in the minority on this one. |
