MLS - Designated Player Rule

You can read this article to get more information on it: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...ule/index.html

In summary it allows MLS teams to sign one player whose contract will only count as $400,000 against the team salary cap of $1.9 million. Any dollars above the $400,000 will be paid by the team, but not affect their cap number.

This, of course, is the league's way of hoping to attract international players.

Obviously, the premier stars will likely stay in more competitive leagues, but it opens the door for guys that are either upset with their current league or perhaps unwanted (ahem David Beckham).

In addition to this, MLS has just negotiated its first rights-fee national television deal with ABC/ESPN and other channels and passed a rule forcing every MLS game to be broadcast on television starting next season.

I realize the league is considered an after thought in the United States in comparison to other major sports, but it's making the moves to establish itself as a solid league.

I know that the national television rights will have me watching more often. I'm not a huge soccer fan, but I'm interested in the sport and though the quality of play will be lower I won't really notice it. So, I think I'll enjoy watching a few games a year.

I'm watching it more often too, lately. I really hope Beckham comes to the Fire!

I hope he brings Posh too

The game is growing by the year here in the States. But they do need to remove the stupid salary cap to ever try to be competitive with even the 2nd and 3rd tier leagues in the world.

Im sure they will remove the salary cap over time if the business keeps picking up (or at least increase the salary cap. This move makes possible future growth possible.

Holy hell
A boring match and then two goals in 20 seconds

That Houston goal was a thing of beauty!

Figures I'd miss it. Watching most of the second half and decided to jump on the comp and now I miss the action.
