I'd have no problem with the Giants winning the series every season, even if it was a largely different cast of guys each year. I wouldn't care, my team won.

In OOTP, I try to win, plain and simple. Are there certain guys I hang onto? Sure, but that leads to the notion of perceived value. My value on the player is higher than that of the league. Would I *never* deal that player? No. I'll deal anyone, someone just has to pay my price. Even my favorite player, in TWB, the same league DY mentions, was put on the block this past season.
I agree with you as well. Basically it comes down to being a casual fan/player, or a competitor. Thats the only difference. Some are ok with 2nd place, some despise it.

These are the top goals, but they are not the only goals. Surely having a special player - a franchise player - accounts for something. It gives the team a face, an identity.

As for OOTP, the goal is whatever you want it to be. You don't have to play to win. You can play to watch old guys perform badly if you want, or to accomplish the ultimate goal of collecting all players with a last name beginning with E. There's no money at stake and no one but you will ultimately care.
I don't entirely agree. A general manager keeps his job if his team wins regardless of asses in the seats. It's more of an owner/marketing department's job to draw fans.

An owner's main goal should be to make money. That's the point of owning a business. A general manager's job is to field a winning team.

You're the expert, I'll differ to your knowledge in that area. Cheating in any leagues lately?

It gets boring. Eventually you need something else to keep your interest.

You cant win all of the time, thats why when you lose you refocus and come back that much stronger with a chip on your shoulder.

Right, you can't win all the time. But the more frequent it is, the less interesting it is. Recent example for me as a fan was the Lakers run. They win one and I get satisfaction out of it. They win the 2nd and it's fun but no longer special. By the time they start their season looking for the 3rd, it's no longer that interesting for me. And really, the next day it no longer really mattered. The Lakers win the 1st one and I'm happy for the rest of the night. After the 2nd, the joy lasted less than an hour. Win or lose, the feeling lasts a short time and then it's back to looking forward to next year.

Winning in sports is what you strive for. It's just not the end all be all for me. I realize it's different for everyone because everyone is different. I just personally don't see how there's much of a difference between winning and losing once the cheering has died down. To a professional athlete, then yeah that's a totally different story.
