2006-07 White Sox Off-Season Thread

No player news, but check this out:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/11/sp...=1&oref=slogin

Quote:
No more 7:05 p.m. or 7:35 p.m. games, of which there are about 50. They will all begin, for the next three seasons, at 7:11 p.m., courtesy of 7-Eleven, the convenience store giant, which will pay the team an average of a half-million dollars a year to be the name behind the time.
Now they can afford to buy out Hermanson.

Maybe that'll be enough to get Juan Uribe out of jail!

http://www.elnacional.com.do/article.aspx?id=1134 (link's in Spanish)

Apparently, Juan and his brother shot an Italian Naval officer and some other guy with a pellet gun because they got too close to his car.

Yay, that'll help his trade value.

Where did you see pellet gun at? Was that in the Spanish article that you have a link to? Every US news article including the Chicago Tribune conveniently left that out. I don't condone what he did, but there is a big difference between shooting someone with a "real" gun and a pellet gun.

I think WGN radio was reporting the pellet gun this morning, but I got that second-hand.

I translated the spanish version and it does say pellets injured the two men. That is amazing that all US news outlets left that out Just wanted to make a bigger story out of it.

I almost forgot to report this, but bench coach Tim "Rock" Raines will not be back in 2007. He will possibly be replaced by (get this) Major League Computer Scouting Analyst Mike Gellinger.

Or Sandy Alomar Jr., but Alomar said he wants to continue playing in 2007.

According to AM1000, Joey "The Freaking Windmill" Cora will take over as bench coach, and Charlotte manager Razor "The Coolest Name In The Universe" Shines will take over as the third base coach.

No formal announcement, though.

In further coaching staff moves, bullpen catcher Man Soo Lee (the "Babe Ruth Of Korea") is allegedly accepting a managerial position back in his native Korea. There has been no official word about this, but it's been reported by the Sun Times and either WSCR or WMVP, I can't remember which.

"So what," I hear you say, "he was only the bullpen catcher. Anybody with a butt can do that job." True enough, but that doesn't begin to explain the coolness that is Man Soo Lee. Sox fans have, over the years, developed a crazy attachment for Man Soo - he is an extraordinarily gregarious guy. Hell, how many of you know who your team's bullpen catcher is?

Here's an example of how awesome Man Soo Lee is:

http://redsoxchick.mlblogs.com/photo...orial/lee.html

Quote:
he was signing EVERYTHING people asked him to and giving away baseballs...and when he ran out of baseballs he gave one kid a batting glove.

He did this before the game started at 2:05...and then during the rest of the rain delays...it was HOURS. And he never stopped smiling or joking with fans.

Most of which were Red Sox fans.
You'll be missed, Man Soo.

In non-Man Soo Lee-related news, the Sox have also exercised their options on Jermaine Dye, Mark Buehrle and Tadahito Iguchi.

They also used their Slurpee money to buy out Dustin Hermanson's contract.

This brings us to the first real freaking thing we can talk about now. What do the Sox do with Buehrle? He has long expresses his desire to play for the Cardinals, and it's likely that the Cardinals will be looking for starting pitching this off-season.

It's also been heavily rumored that the Sox will be dealing from their perceived surplus of starting pitching...could Buehrle be the odd man out? Honestly, I don't really see the point in shopping Buehrle yet, especially since he's coming off the worst year of his career - in particular, a second half that saw his ERA climb nearly two full points.

Talk to me, people, I don't want this thread to turn into a monologue.

At least he's using his off-season to improve his ability to hit things.

I think the Sox should hold off on trading Buehrle. His agent stated the other day (In Chicago Tribune) that Buehrle would like to remain in Chicago for his entire career. This could have been just PR garbage, but I don't see any reason to trade him. I would wait out the first few months of this season and see if he regains his form. If not, I would trade him in a second for whatever you can get from St. Louis. I'm just hoping the second half of '06 was just a fluke and not a trend. I'd hate to see him go considering I have two Buehrle jereseys

For what it's worth...a little nugget from a Baseball Think Factory article my brother wrote:

Quote:
The good news is I asked [former minor league pitcher] Chad Bradford Wannabe to do one of his write ups on Mark Buehrle, and he ultimately decided not to because his mechanics are essentially hadn't changed in 2006. Whatever his problem, it's not an injury screwing up his motions like it might be with Mark Mulder.
...not sure if it's some sort of mental block he has going on, or what. But I remember Harrelson noting numerous times that Buehrle just wasn't pitching inside like he used to, and that leaves his less-than-blazing fastball out over the plate (since he is a notorious first-pitch-strike pitcher), which got him in a lot of trouble last year.

Ironically, 3 of those 4 guys spent some time on the South Side, too.
