Orel's already stated he's not leaving the Rangers to make a lateral move. It's either a move up to manager, GM, or he'll return as pitching coach of the Rangers.

Good because the Dodgers could use a 40/40 guy, just ask Eric Gagne.

I tend to be an optimistic Dodgers fan, but the situation right now with ownership and management is just awful. I see very little reason for hope right now.

First of all, this is the dumbest thread title imaginable. Un-Rack the thread starter.

What's with all the Kim Ng love? What has she done? Other than piss off Eric Gagne by smacking him down during his arbitration hearing and then dancing a celebratory jig on his beaten carcass? I'm not going to be excited about her getting the job. If she gets it, I'll give her a chance, the same as I would any other unproven entity. I'm just not going to hope she gets it.

The shining light is that even if McCourt hires the worst GM imaginable, at least we know he'll fire the guy/woman before too long.

That is what Kim Ng famous for. Winning arbitrations. She was great at what she's supposed to do. It's not her job to negotiate a more reasonable contract before reaching arbitration.

If you are trying to explain why she would make a great GM, you are making zero sense to me.

She's been handling arbitration for years for various teams, and she got a great track record doing that. There were tons of people saying great things about her analytical and negotiation skills, and that's how she got promoted so fast.

Most teams and players would agree to contracts before reaching arbitration. And that's GM's job. If you want to complaint about the Gagne case, blame it on whoever let it through to the arbitration process. Blame it on whoever set the price for the team. Not the girl that won the case for the team. Lawyers representing criminals aren't criminals.

And if Ng is so great at convincing the arbitrator, don't you think there is a good chance she'd be great with other GMs?

I'm with Skip on this one. All the evidence we have indicates that she knows what she's doing. She also knows the people left in the front office, the players and the prospects which will minimize any adjustment period. Given the time of year and the state of disarray, I think she's by far the best option. That said, with the McCourts at the helm, the Dodgers are still screwed.

Was that just a one year deal? Is the Dodger farm system bereft of quality OF prospects?

A one-year deal with a $4.5M/$300k club option/buyout in 07.

We don't have any OF prospects above A-ball. Jacksonville is nothing but infielders and pitchers (but damn it if they're not good) and some 27- and 28-year-old outfielders who hit the crap out of those 21-year-old pitchers. Hell, we don't have any quality prospects period above AA.

There will be a buyout. Unless the Dodgers future management is really bad.

It's an overpay, considering Cruz's career as a whole, but no big deal if it gives you another year to sort out a cheaper alternative.

Jim Bowden announced he is not interested in the Dodgers job. Phew.

Yeah, but who are our options? Milton Bradley will be traded or non-tendered. He will not play on Frank McCourt's team (and let's not fool ourselves who is, and always will be, running the ship). Jayson Werth is fragile and coming off a horrible season. J.D. Drew is even more fragile and while his injury was the result of a HbP, he missed time because of his knee and also had shoulder surgery while he was on the DL for his wrist injury. I'm not expecting 300 AB out of him next year, nor should anyone else.

That leaves Ricky Ledee as our outfield cornerstone. Ricky Ledee. Given that the Dodgers can certainly afford three mil for a guy who can play for them all year (since they gave that to Jose Valentin for 147 AB last year), I think it was an extremely smart move. If he's not an Opening Day starter, which I'm fairly certain he will be, he'll be in the starting lineup by July when someone goes down.
