Can't Start, Need Advice

Here is my problem. I bought OOTP6 today. Downloaded and payed for it. Then went to run it and it gave me an illegal operation. I am running on Windows 98, the coponents of the computer are pretty factory type stuff, but I meet all of the recommended system requirments.

I got on here and looked at the other posts about this type of problem and I can see that it looks like it might be common. This is what I have tried from reading posts:
  • Scandisk
  • Defragment
  • Removed as much software as possible
  • Updated my drivers
  • Went into msconfig to make sure LicCtrl was checked off
  • Windows Update
  • Got the latest version of DirectX
  • Reformated my harddrive and recovered Windows
All of that and still no luck. Is there anything else I might try? If not, is OOTP able to run on any Linux software? If so, which ones would work well with it? Because I will consider to use a Linux OS to get my money's worth.

Sounds like an Windows 98 problem. What I mean by that is you need to upgrade to XP. Do have anti-virus software installed? Sometimes if you install ootp when it's enabled you run into some problems.

Actually. I did have virus software on my computer when I got the program and installed it I think. I will give that a try and report what happens with that.

Are you having problems with any other games on your computer?

No, I'm not. The only other game I have on my computer is Starcraft. And it works just fine. All other programs run smoothly also.
