New Historical Roster Set

I have updated my Garlon All-Time Franchise Roster Set. Joe has made it available to download on his site www.ootpdownloadcenter.com

Here is the readme:

Garlon's Franchise Hall Of Fame Roster Set Version 2.0

This roster set contains each franchise's 25 best players of all-time and features a total of 32 teams.

The concept behind the roster set is to have the greatest players ever all thrown into a league in which they all start as rookies and age together, so that you will have fantasy matchups such as Nolan Ryan vs Babe Ruth, or to see what a Giants lineup could do featuring 500 Homerun Club members Barry Bonds, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, and Mel Ott.

Players who played the majority of their career before 1900 are only eligible for the Pioneers team and only if they made it into the Hall Of Fame.

There are 28 major league teams, a Pioneers team featuring Hall Of Famers who played prior to 1900, a Negro League All-Star Team, a Wonders team of players who deserve an honorable mention but did not make it on to an other team's 25-man roster, and a Modern Stars team featuring a team of the best modern players who did not make it onto any other team's 25-man roster.

Players were imported in their rookie season using Ankit's Career Average database.

The rosters were compiled using the following references -- MLB website, Total Baseball, Rob Neyer's Big Book Of Baseball Lineups, The Sporting News Official Major League Fact Book, Win Shares, and The New Bill James Historical Abstract.

Negro League Players were imported based on major league players comparable to them.

Defensive Ratings have been edited to reflect BIll James defensive grades in his Win Shares book...he grades them from A+ to F, and numbers have been assigned to each grade A+ 100, A 90, A- 85, B+ 80, B 75, B- 70, C+ 65, C 50, C- 35, D+ 30, D 25, D- 20. These numbers were then applied to both a players fielding range and his arm rating.

Speed Ratings also have custom calculations. Stealing ability was calculated by a players stolen bases per 162 games then multiplies by 2, so any player who averaged at least 50 stolen bases per 162 games played for his career would receive a rating of 100. Speed was simply a player's Stealing Ability rating plus 25, not the best method but after considering many other options it was essentially the best and easiest way to calculate it. Running Instincts rating was calculated by using a player's career stolen base %, any player who was successful 60% of the time would receive a rating of 50, any player who was successful 80% of the time would receive 100, any player 40% or under would receive a 1, every percentage point on either side of 60% was worth 2.5 points added to or subtracted from 50. For players in which there is not complete stolen base data for an alternate method was implemented...stolen bases divided by 5 would be used to determine the rating, so a player would need to steal at least 500 bases to receive a runing instincts rating of 100.

When using the roster set be sure to "recalculate using previous season's totals" in the stat engine before starting each subsequent season, doing so will keep the league in balance and help to account for how players age. The stats that are already in the engine should be used for the first season...they are: AB 225904, H 62124, Doubles 15531, Triples 1243, HR 6212, Walks 22590, HBP 2259, K 28238, Avg of Balls In Play .300.

To use the roster set, unzip the contents to a folder and then add the esxtension ".lg" to the folder name and put the folder in your OOTP folder where you other ".lg" folders should be.

It certainly looks like you have really done your homework.
This looks like a great league.
I think I will give it a try.
Thanks for all the hard work and thanks for sharing it.

I have twice put together alltime allstar leagues...one with 16 original franchises and 4 composite expansion teams (expansion teams individually just don't have enough players to compete against the teams with 100 year histories)...I also set up farm teams in separate leagues in Class AAA, AA and A...Players from 1901-1930 were assigned to the Majors...1930-1960 Class AAA...1960-1980 Class AA...and 1980-2002 to Class A.

I included Negro and Japanese stars as well as some of the great alltime minor leaguers, who should have played in the majors, but didn't for various reasons, usually because they were paid better by the minors.

At the end of each season I promoted and demoted players using Ankit's Player Import Editor.

This project took several months to do working at least 8 hours a day...I'm retired...so have the time.

But I soon found it took too much time to research who to promote and demote for 80 teams and 2000 players, use Pierre's editor and then rework all the pitching staffs, lineups, depth charts and other game settings.

I also discovered that I imported players in non-rookie years and this fouled up the OOTPB stats...it listed the players real life records into the game's stats.

I abandoned the leagues because of these things.

I now have a 16 teams alltime allstar league and have learned to import players in their first real season...not necessarily their rookie season...using Ankit's Career Average Database...still had to do a lot of editing the players ratings to be accurate.

Slight problem

Eugene, and anyone else,

When you download and unzip the file from ootpdownloadcenter.com look for a file inside the zip called mlbversion2 - that is the league file. I am not sure why Joe zipped the file like this, but you need to use just that file and put that into your ootp directory to get the league to work. It is basically a file within the G Roster file that you need to use. DO NOT just simply rename the G Roster file to ".lg" as this will result in no teams appearing in the game.

Just look for that mlbversion2 file and take that out and use it separately, that is the real file you need. I think Joe just consolidated the new updated with the old file. I will try to get him to change it so there isn't this confusion.

So just grab the mlbversion2 file and rename to mlbversion2.lg and place it in your ootp doirectory with your other league files.

The testing that I have done with the rosters has all been done with all era settings at "normal". For the most accurate statistics I suggest enabling player fatigue, otherwise the great players become too strong.

The draft logic of the game is pretty strong. Some advice for you - look for era over strikeouts and base your decisions heavily on hrs allowed. Satchel Paige is the best pitcher in the game, he is the only player I edited from scratch.
