Feel stupid for asking but having problems opening game

I'm sorry if this has been answered but I have searched and looked and can't find anything to help me out.

I bought OOTP right when it came out and had problems opening it, I would get a THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL OPERATION..
OOTP6 caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:00000009.

After fidgetting around, I got it to work, however this problem is back...I have uninstalled the game and reinstalled it with no luck..

Win 98 Second Edition
128 MB
56%
Pentium 2...

anyone please help if you have any ideas.

Go to start then run and type dxdiag and hit enter. The direct X utility will open and it will let you know what version of direct X you are have installed. If it is less than v9 go to http://www.microsoft.com download and install v9, reboot your computer and then try the game
