A Plea For Player Numbers
With all the joy that fixing the 'De Los Santos' and 'McDowell's of the OOTP world brought, perhaps a similar quick fix can be added to bring the player numbers to a more realistic range. Nothing bothered me more than...
"Coming to the plate... Number 100... 1B James Kelly." He has 318 home runs...why he is he wearing triple digits? I know, I know, edit it...but every other guy across a league...it's tedious. I'm an obssessive freak, yes, but it'd be great to see the numbers brought down to a range of 1-60 or so, as well as seeing two guys on the same team not "wear" the same number. Thought I'd bring this to the forefront as it was suggested (in 'Suggestions' no less) a while back. Thanks for reading - I'm off to bed now as I'm making less sense than normal. Craig |

I totally agree with this. However, it may be too late for this to be put in for v6 initially, or even at all (depending on the complexity of coding for this). Maybe we can see it in a patch though.

I thought you were going to ask for accurate numbers, a better range is much more reasonable and dare I say easy to implement.

Yea, having a range being set would be a cool thing if it wouldn't be to much work. Also the ability to
a) have numbers retired b) have only one number per team would be great |

I don't worry about teams I don't control. I just edit my own teams. So while I can see where this would be useful, It's not necessary to me. I do like the idea of retired #s though

If I had to guess, the problem with number per team is that a guy in the Majors and Single A need to share a number.

MLB level plus 3 minor levels at 25 players each unfortunately requires 100 numbers. I suspect something could be done to change that, but not now

Why does it have to be 100 though? Why couldn't it start at 0, or even 00?
There ARE 100 numbers before you go to triple digits. Maybe THAT change could be made...it wouldn't correct everything, but it would take a big step in the right direction. Remember, Ol' Penitentiary Face had Double Zero. Last edited by John C; 04-13-2004 at 02:21 AM. |

I posted a while back about having each player have an attirbute called their "Desired Number." For most player, this will be in the 1-49 range, with a few Barry Zitos out there. Whenever a player joins a new team, whether it be a promotion to AA, or a major league free agent, or whatever, if no one on that team has the number yet, it becomes his number. If someone does, he gets the next closest number.
Say Joe Shmoe is promoted to AA and wants number 29, but Bob Hoser already has it. 28 is available, so Joe wears that number. Two months later, Bob gets traded, so Joe gets his number 29 now. For human controlled teams, whenever a conflict arises, a message will pop up and give you a choice of numbers for the new player. This will keep most numbers low and prevent players on the same team with the same number. You could still have a number 25 in the majors, AAA, and every other level and maybe even add the possibility of retiring numbers with options similar to the Hall of Fame requirements. |

I would like to advocate for fractals, exponentials, trigonometric terms, and algebraic notations to give more numeric options. Perhaps an imaginary number here and there would be appropriate as well.
I think it would be most appropriate for a guy like Greg Maddux to now be identified as 2sin(pi)

Probably not the easiest idea to implement, but I would LOVE to see this.
