WOO HOO!

This is one of the really great tools available to baseball fans. Even if you don't use it for Out of the Park it's unbelievable for plumbing historical data. The Baseball Archive people offer this free of charge but showing your appreciation with a suitable Paypal donation or some words of thanks would let them know how much we value what they do.

I can't wait to pull in 2003 for a run-through. Then I plan to build Access queries until spring looking for little-known baseball truths a'la Moneyball. (I'd be interested to know if anyone else builds queries in Lahman and what kind of stuff you've found out. My latest was to determine the number of runs a team would have to score to win a certain number of games in a year given the number of runs their opponent would score - which was a tool the Oakland A's used in trying to figure out how much offense they needed to acquire. It involved using the equation from the logorithmic trendline of a scatter chart of every teams' winning percentage and runs scored as a percentage of their opponents. I think it's cool - but then I'm a baseball geek. Of course, if you're reading these message boards, you probably are too.)

This year's addition of the Lahman database is just as inaccurate as all the others. The only things they seem to get right are the player names and sometimes the birthdates.

Is it too much to ask for the ratings to be correct? How about the fielding %s and the baserunning info?

I do use the Lahman database just because there really is no other option but it requires ALOT of editing and the 2004 addition appears to be exactly the same as the 2003 addition. The pitchers were supposed to have WP totals and the fielding info was supposed to be improved but of course none of that was done. There were several other changes that were mentioned in the Readme file but I didn't see any of it reflected in what I downloaded.

What a joke.

Teflon:

Thanks for the reminder that we that use the very, very valuable Baseball-Reference site and the very, very valuable Lahman Database need to support it financially.

I'm going to see what it costs to sponsor a few of my alltime favorites that played for the Mobile Bears in the Southern Association: Gary Bell, Bill Dailey, Dick Stigman, Gordy Coleman, Don Demeter, Jim Gentile, Walt Moryn and Dick Brown.

Can anyone explain to me how to use the database?

I might just be an idiot but I dunno.

I can give my opinion about anything I want. I did not say I don't use it...it just needs alot of editing and they should make more of an effort with it if they are going to bill it as such a great piece of work.

i don't think it's lahman's fault as ootp manipulates the stats into ootp ratings. am i missing something?

Nope. The key thing about the Lahman DB is that if you import, and set talents based on remaining career, there is no remaining career in a 2004 league. The stats are accurate, the ratings, for the most part, are accurate. You're gonna have some cup of coffee players that are gonna need to be edited, but ratings are fine. Talent is the issue.

The Lahman Database is a wonderful source of information.

But for whatever reason, when I use it to import players for my historical leagues, it requires a tremendous amount of editing to get the ratings accurate.

I end up with too many seemingly randomly-assigned ratings for arm, speed, range...just to name a few.

Pitchers get a "10" rating for stikeouts (while batting) whenever that category is not kept by the leagues. Apparently, the computer picks up "0" for no strikeouts while batting and gives the player the highest rating.

Stealing is based on percentage...a player who steals 2 out 2 attempts is rated higher than a player who steals 20 out 30 attempts. It doesn't seem to consider quantity.

Nontheless, it is a great tool.

I use Ankit's Career Average Database now and it seems to be much better...although it requires some editing, too.

Nope, if people have a gripe, it should be with the interpretation of the stats during the import. The database is just that, a database of stats and information, not ratings.

Perhaps there could be suggestions on how to improve the importing from Lahmans?

Is there a mod to edit Career Stats? I notice than when one imports from Lahman 5.1, that some players (Manny Ramirez and Trot Nixon for example) have 2002 Stats on some info screens but not under their career stats. Have not checked all the players but it appears some players have no 2002 in their carrer numbers under the new 5.1 Lahman version. Anyone else have a similiar experience? Known issue?
