In my experience the 4 man rotation is always better. There was a thread in here someplace that went into detail about the differences and what you could expect in terms of injury rates, etc but I do not have the link off hand.
I say use the 4 man!!! |

A 4 man rotation is very useful and more productive than a 5 man, since most teams don't have 5 good starters.
Has anyone tried a 3-man rotation in modern settings? |

4 man rotation > 5 man rotation.
Don't tell anyone in my online leagues!

Quite a few teams switch to a four man rotation at the beginning of the season when it seems pointless to have a five man rotation with all the days off.

Seems like those four should give you a hell of a pitching staff..... as long as they perform up to their ratings you're in business.

P1 and P2 where great last year however the other 2 struggled. P4 was 7-12 with a 4.77ERA giving up 217H in 190IP

I have played with it some. Where a 4 man rotation does not seem to effect how long the pitcher remains in the game to a great deal (I can usually pitch a 4 man rotation and have quality starts each time out), the 3 man rotation appears to limit the pitcher's duration to only about 2/3 the pitches that he would have full duration.. generally between 50-70 pitches and they are done for. THis means they end up leaving alot of games between the 4th and 6th innings. What it then creates is an alternating effect of having one go around with short innings, the next go around with long innings, and it beats up the bullpen pretty nicely. For playoffs 3 man rotations appear to work like a champ. In the regular season, you really seem to need one more day in there. |

I have no problem if there were 4 man rotations in real life but honestly they are rare.so to mirror real life baseball this game should do the same. Thats why there should be a penalty. |

this game isn't designed to mirror real life baseball, it's designed to create your own personal baseball universe. Big difference.
However, that's an argument for another thread. Four man rotations seem to work out just fine UNLESS one of your starters has an E duration. The E duration guys really need that extra day of rest, or they won't pitch very far into games. If you've got a great bullpen, then it may work out allright. I prefer to have 5 good starters so that they are always pitching on full rest, and they are all good. |

To the people who use 4 man rotations do you put a pitch count on each starter?

Besides, why would there be a penalty? I mean, it's a managerial strategy and every starter in your rotation has an extra risk of injury (since he pitches more innings, not from "fatigue" or whatever), so I really don't see why there should be a penalty especially since the game does mirror real life as far as players' endurance goes. While we're at it, why not put a penalty on people that put the pitcher in the 8 spot or that don't use the DH in the AL? These are strictly managerial decisions, and as long as the tools (in this case, ratings) of real life modern baseball and in OOTP are equivalent, I don't agree with going forward with any kind of penalty.

Asamford is right. Four man rotations do not work very well if one of the starters is an E, or even D, endurance. I have always used 4 man in my solo leagues and more often than not in my on-line leagues. However, I just started a modern solo league using fictional players and used the four man. Playing out each game, I noticed that each game my starting pitchers could throw less and less pitches before turning red. When my number three starter was tired in the fourth inning, I went to the 5 man. The four man rotation is clearly superior, but you want to make sure that your pitchers have enough endurance to handle it.
