Do Face Gens with the old naming conventions still work?

Hoepfully that is clear; old being full name (Aaron_Boone.fg) vs new with letters and numbers (abreu-000alb.fg)

Can't find a definitive answer. Thanks.

There is an order of precedence so that in the event all three are there, the game selects them in rank order. The first would be the Historical Minors ID (boone-001aar.fg), then if that isn't there, it looks for the Historical ID (booneaa0.fg) and last, if neither of those are there, it will look for the First_Last naming convention (Aaron_Boone.fg).

The facegen packs have a lot of outdated Historical Minors IDs because generally one takes the default in the game and then writes atop it with improved facegens collected or made over time... and I find alot of the outdated ones just never go away due to that repasting approach or starting over from the latest game-default pack. They do no harm but are clutter. So where as years ago, the code "dent--001buc.fg" might have been tied to Bucky Dent, the game now uses "dent--001rus". It is generally the bRef code at the end of the website string when you click on the bRef page - and then go to their full stat record that includes their minor league history. So, if you have the correct Historical Minors ID, that's all you need and everything else is clutter or a back-up. Using the Historical Minors ID is also preferred since there can be two players with the same name or their son is in the game too...

Tell me about it. I went through every year trying to fix the missing players Ids in the facegen pack. It is maddening how every "Tom", "Mike", Tony", and "Bill" does not show up in the game because their old ID ended in "tom", "mik", "ton", and "bil" and now their ID in the game uses their bbref historical minors ID, so you need to change almost all to "tho" (Thomas), "mic" (Michael), "ant" (Anthony), and "wil" (William)

there are hundreds of file names that need to be changed. the earlier years have the most I feel with all of the nicknames people used for names, like Doc, Rip, Chick, Red, and tons more. All have to be changed. yuck

I've complained about this before. Please let me pick how I want the facegen order to go. I would rather it pick by name, first. Why? Because like you have just stated, I have over 35,000 facegens all by name. And for the life of me, which it would be, I will not go through all of them just to rename them. It's silly and yes maddening to even try that. I manage just fine with the names.

I agree with that. There were a lot fewer to fix when it was just the names.

Ideally, a couple interns could review every .fg file that ships with the game and if it an old ID that isn't tied to actual player, delete it from the next shipment. For my part, it would be easier to cull the ones I've redone and pull those out of my current folder and paste them atop a clean, uncluttered new OOTP 23 default fg folder.

I have 44,446 fg files and a ton are duplicates between the Minors ID (that've I've of recently focused on for the ones I make) and the First_Last name files (some of which aren't even the same image). Not to mention all the afore mentioned dead files like "dent--001buc.fg". If the dead ones were gone or if all the First_Name ones (even though I concede those are easier to identify what player it is in a file view), then each player would have one .fg. Either their Minors ID or. if none (no time in minors), their main ID.

The burnout I got was having the old Historical Minor IDs I changed or deleted keep showing up in the game shipment or even accidently reappear from my own copying over from year-to-year so I didn't lose ones I custom made. If it's a repasting issue and not a default ship-with-the-game file, I concede that's on me to clean up but I'm not certain it is. It seems the shipped-file is full of clutter too. Maybe a developer could let us know how they got the files that ship and when they last gave true attention to it (aside from adding a few new players every year from somewhere).

I'll commit to myself to culling my own 44k+ and pull out my custom fg files one time - and once only because every year is too much - but to even think about putting in that time, I'd need to know the next year's default OOTP 23 file isn't going to just have them again.

EDIT: Or if the new facegens the game ships with each year also came in a separate folder so I could delete the contents of the shipped file full of duplicates/dead files, just copy just those new, debut fg's over to my self-culled file - that'd be great. It's those new files mixed in with the dead weight that prevents an efficient overlay/paste of files to maintain a clean master individually.

I['m currently going through my facegen pack (again) and renaming any file that is wrong to give every player a face.

I started in 1901 and am currently in 1922

I already did this once (but I forgot to do the reserve players) it is a pain, but I do a little at a time. the problem is the fg_files is so darn huge like you mentioned. need to whittle down the extras in there. wish there was an easy way
