Injured List Questions

Do you have to place a player on the Injured List for him to heal... that is, can he stay on the active roster and heal?

The player will be out 4 weeks... if I place him on the 60-day list, will he have to stay there 60 days?

Sorry, I have never handled injured players...always let the AI handle them in the past and didn't really pay close attention to the Injured List.

you CAN keep him on the roster but i wouldnt play him...could get hurt worse (if he is even able to play with the injury). That also occupies one roster spot of "dead weight". If you put him to 60 day he MUST remain there for 60 days even if he heals in 45 days.

Day-to-day injuries: He can stay on the active roster, even keep playing, and still heal, though there is higher risk of further injury, as well as diminished performance.

"Out" injuries: He'll heal whether he's on the IL or not. The reason to put him on IL, as jparker2112 noted, is you can't play him and he'll take up deadweight on the roster, so you'll have to decide whether the length of recovery warrants an IL stint. Like if he'll be OK in 5 days, you can decide whether it's worth it to play those games with a short bench and get him back, or just put him on IL for 10 days and replace him on the active roster.

The responses above me are correct

Just to add, placing a player on the 60-Day IL takes them off the 40-man roster as well as the active roster

Thanks to all of you guys.

I'll just leave my injured players on my active rosters.
I play out all of my games, so I can make sure the injured players don't play until they are healed.

I play a semi-pro league with only 15-16 active players, but I can keep 30 players on the roster with no problems.

I just wanted to make sure the injured player would heal even if they were on the active roster.

Much appreciate your replies.

If the player is fully injured (in red on lists), then you cannot even accidentally use him in a game, he's ineligible anyways. He'll heal the same either way, using the injured list saves you a roster spot if you want it.

DtD players can play, although they are at a higher risk of re-injuring themselves if you do play them. And players who are DtD with an unknown return date are the one case where explicitly not playing them will let them return to full health faster than otherwise, however in either case, there's no difference in healing whether they are on the roster vs on the injured list.

I would 15-Day IL

For a couple reasons:

  • You can't use him anyway, and this allows you to replace him on your roster
  • You are not forced to move him to the 60-day if he's still hurt after the 15 days. He'll just sit there, still not playing and still not consuming an active roster spot.
  • At the end of the injury you can send him on a rehab assignment to the minors without it burning an option year.

When the only choice was 15 days, lots of teams would keep a guy sitting on the bench for 3-4 days to see if he could avoid a DL trip, then if he didn't come around, put him on the list retroactively (i.e. you can backdate to when he was last used in a game). But that depends on who else you have to play/pitch to take up the slack, pinch hit for pitchers, etc. I don't like playing shorthanded for more than a couple games.
