Skyboxes

I'll be uploading skyboxes to the link below as I finish them off. Night and day are the same as these are not my original images, but rather many that I picked up from online that were licensed for non-commerical use. Also, the lower half of the skybox images is relatively unimportant in terms of what's there. Your OF stands should obscure much of it.

Expand, drop into the skybox folder inside the ballpark construction kit, and enjoy. By the way, you don't need the preview image—it's just the forward view.

Tip: If you want to take one of the night views for use with one of the day views, copy the sky_box_night folder from one view to the other, replacing the original.

Yes, they are. I've been snagging HDRI 360 panos from everywhere that has a non-comm license. Must have 30GB of images pulled down, and I've grinding out boxes in my spare time now.

As an example,

the pano yields a front face like the second image. I'm getting the boxes made using this absolutely cool free program called CubeTheSphere. Had to install Windows 7 in a VirtualBox Machine to do it.

Have a program for my iPhone that 'claims' to produce the panoramics. Tested it in my office, and the image had blurs throughout, but that was certainly due to the case being on, which they advise against while taking the pix.

Have taken a couple of nice linear 360 panos as well with my gimbal, but they're just of a rustic lake near my house. I'll be blitzing through the images I have, and now that our lockdown has been lifted up North, I'll be heading out and about looking for gorgeous fields and awesome skies to shoot.

I'm still learning some of this, but as I do, quality and usefulness of these images WILL improve.

Is there anyway to modify these boxes, or the OOTP ones so that the skies are transparent to show the sky backgrounds in the Models/misc folder? I tried changing deleting the sky in the WEBP files and that didn't work. I changed them to png, deleted the sky and that didn't work. I lastly tried saving the png with the transparent background as a WEBP and that didn't work. The day and night skies in the OOTP boxes not only don't look real but also you don't see the evening sky. You would think there would be an easy fix to that.

I honestly don't know enough about 3d to answer that. I got started on this because I thought the boxes that came were very low res, and I was working on my QS. When Jorin posted the tutorial, I started looking for solutions. It's a lot harder when you're on a Mac because so many tools are wintel only. Had to grab VirtualBox and a copy of 7 to work from. Then found cubethesphere ( a godsend!). Then found a Mac webp converter—we don't natively support the format on our side (&^%%*!).

My workflow on these is download images, use cubethesphere (selecting 2048 as my resolution) to convert the hdri panos to the 6 files for the box, convert them from bmp's to webp, rename them. It's a simplistic process because I'm in my infancy at this. I've loaded blender, but it's baffling me without a guidebook, and the tutorials on youtube are almost all on older versions—nothings where I expect it to be.

Maybe we should feature suggest evening skyboxes?

From my brief work with webp files. They don’t support transparency, therefore they need to have skies on the pics.

Since OOTP allows viewing of transparent (PNG) sky backgrounds, you would think it would be no big deal to have sky boxes with transparent skies.

New plan!!!

Scrap these. Tonight, Mrs. Cobb and I went to the UP and took some sample photospheres with a new app. They're not ideal, as my new tripod hasn't come yet, but there'll be no more skyboxes posted from me that are anything but mine. The image quality should be pretty darn good as well...<<crosses fingers>>...

This 'should' be the worst quality I get. Mind you, this was taken in failing light on a heavily rainy day...far from ideal conditions...and yes, that's the Cobb-mobile with Mrs. Cobb, Na'Toth, and G'Kar on board.

—Edit: Even with the miserable lighting at a little after 9 at night in the woods, it's passable. Took these on the point just outside Epoufette, MI. When the tripod comes and I'm out in actual daylight...let's just say I'm excited!

The new tripod and external drive came this morning! Tonight, it's off to the hinterlands to start getting some skyboxes prepped. I'm going to start a new thread when I do this, and while the boxes will be published slowly, it should be steadily as well. I'll probably also take a fair number of standard panos as well.

Wish me luck!

I'm trying to use some of your skyboxes to create a 19th century
ballpark. When scrolling thru the backgrounds why is the night
version always displayed where you can barely see anything?
Is there a way to default that to a day view?
Also when I tried to use one your folders the stadium background just
shows just brown sand. box_051220029 I extracted the rar file and moved the folder into the skybox folder per your instructions.
I just purchased this game for the first time last week so I'm a neophyte
with this.
Thanks.

I also noticed an element DS.store in your downloaded folders which I have deleted.
Also your elements are 2048X2048 twice as large as the ones that come with the kit but I guess thats a good thing?

Because I started with a lot of files that were just licensed for non-commercial use, those are what they are...day and night are the same.

Until I get a lot of travel under my belt, mine will also be the same day and night, as Mrs. Cobb and the pups won't sit 12 hours in the same spot just for me to get a pix...grrrrr! We'll be making follow up trips to places and taking evening shots eventually. Michigan is just emerging from lockdown and I can finally start roaming again.

The DS. Store files are a Mac OS thing, and I totally forgot about them. They're junk, and you can toss them away. I'll try to eliminate those in the future...learning curve for me.

Yes, my boxes are much higher resolution. That shouldn't cause issues, and hasn't in my test runs.

As for getting just sand, after you create your model, go to the part of the ballpark editor shown in this pic, and change your current view from construction kit to wide. That should do the trick. If not, let me know and I'll get on it.

When you're in-game, you also can control which cameras to use, see 2nd pic for that menu.

Welcome aboard!
